Two-Goal Drinan Buzzing
Tuesday, 18th Aug 2020 22:23

Striker Aaron Drinan was delighted to get his pre-season up and running with two goals in the Blues’ first 75-minute friendly against Colchester.

The 22-year-old started down the middle of the front three - with James Norwood still rehabilitating after his groin operation and new signing Oli Hawkins not having trained enough to be involved in a game - and netted the opening two goals - the second from the penalty spot - as Town won 2-0.

“As a striker you have to be buzzing with that start," he told iFollow Ipswich.

“When you have someone like Bish [Teddy Bishop] playing balls through like that, it makes finishing a bit easier as well.

“Bish then did well to win the penalty and I felt confident stepping up to take it.

“Overall as a team we were strong too, to be honest they never really got near us in that game.

“More than anything it's just good to get minutes in the bank. We have a tough game against Spurs on Saturday so it was good preparation for that.”

Drinan, who joined the Blues from Waterford in January 2018, is still to make a competitive first-team appearance having spent time out on loan back at Sutton, back at his previous club in the League of Ireland, in Sweden with GAIS and in Scotland with Ayr United over the last couple of seasons.

Surely he's worth a crack in a competitive game?

Well done! Drinan is a good player, seen him at Waterford and he looked well able for competitive senior football. Those trips out on loan abroad will stand yo him. Best of luck for rest of preseason. Hope you can keep scoring and give PL a real headache!

As an overaged player, and with 4 senior strikers on our books now, it will be interesting to see who makes the 22 man cut and what happens to those that dont.

Mojo, I was thinking the same thing earlier. We actually have a few to many players now it seems, wonder if we sell anyone? Perhaps loan some out?

Blue86. I think with the 3 additions we are now at 23 over 21 year olds. Happy to be corrected. So we need to move on at least 1 or the unlucky player will have a contract sith us but wont be eligible to play. Literally stuck in no man's land.

Well done lad, routing for you and watched you in the under 23s several times. You lead the line like a seasoned pro tonight and a real number 9, and shock horror Mr Norwood and Mr Jackson might have some real competition from yourself and Oli this season. Just appears a rugged well balanced lad rather than a prima donna who wants to let his agent do all the talking!!!

The lad did well tonight and I like his attitude, I'd like to see something approaching that attitude from Norwood, I'm not so sue about him and his lifestyle, if he spent less time on Instagram things might improve, there were several positives tonight though, I know it's early doors and I would like to see us be a bit more direct at times. We keep the ball well but the end product is still a struggle.

Encouraging start. Hopefully Aaron will kick on from here and turn it into a season to establish himself, fingers crossed......

Great to hear that Teddy went well. also. If he can stay fit this could be a great season for him....... while it is only the start of pre-season it is great to see a few hands being raised, particularly up front and for a more creative midfield.....

Refreshing to hear a bold statement instead of the usual customary back slapping, Drinan might give Lambert and the strikers something to think about. Encouraging.

Really pleased for Drinan but with the game yesterday we beat Col U 5-0 last year too so lets not read too much into it

Only seen him in the under 23s but his attitude always seems good .Short sleeves in all weathers reminds me of a young Murphy,Let's give him some game time ,Will give our other strikers a kick up the bum hopefully.Well done Aaron.

Well played. Now expect to be stuck in reserves then sold cheap to a rival and be very successful somewhere else!
