Arsenal’s U21s beat Crawley Town 2-1 in the Blues’ EFL Trophy group this evening.

Ex-Town academy schoolboy Harry Clarke skippered the young Gunners and another one-time Blues youth player Marcelo Flores was an unused sub.

Arsenal's youngsters top the group on maximum points with Town second with three on goal difference from Gillingham.

The Blues face the Red Devils, who are keen to sign Town forward Armando Dobra on loan before Friday’s 5pm deadline, in their final group match at the Broadfield Stadium on Tuesday 10th November.

A victory would secure a place in the knockout stage, while a draw either with or without a bonus point for winning a penalty shootout could be enough for the Blues depending on the result in the Gillingham-Arsenal U21s fixture.

Even with El Mizouni, probably Dobra & maybe others away on loan, we still have a big enough squad & good youngsters that will benefit from proper games that are competitive. Also, in a month or two we'll have Drinan & Norwood coming back & if we progress it could be game time for Downes, KVY & even Nydam. Then we look at the fact that we need the likes of Huws, Donacien, Cornell & a couple of centre halves to be up to speed should they get their chance to come into the starting XI.

VanDusen added 09:45 - Oct 14 All those condemning Project Big Picture in the other thread could make a practical start by boycotting this competition - this is the thin end of the wedge people have been warning about, with PBP the inevitable next stage they have been pushing for.

Europablue added 10:29 - Oct 14 VanDusen, while I certainly agree that the premier league teams shouldn't have been allowed to join this competition, the effect that it has had is making it a reserve team cup, and that is fine with me. Semi-competitive games for the fringe players will help them stay primed to play when they need to.
