Wolves Left-Back and Former Manchester United Trainee Among Blues Trialists
Friday, 13th Nov 2020 17:40

Wolves left-back Cyriaque Mayounga, a Central African Republic international, ex-Manchester United academy midfielder Aidan Barlow, Quevin Castro and Needham Market youngster Callum Page were the trialists who played for the Blues’ U23s in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Coventry City at Playford Road, TWTD understands.

With most of the development squad in action in the Papa John’s Trophy at Crawley on Tuesday, the U23s line-up which faced the Sky Blues earlier in the day featured a number of U18s players, three trialists from the start and one from the bench, as well as former Town defender Chris Casement, 32, who has been coaching at Playford Road having recently signed for Stowmarket. Sub Tommy Hughes scored the Town goal.

Left-back or centre-half Mayounga, 20, joined Wolves from Olympique Lyonnais on a two-year deal in the summer of 2019 having come through the youth system at his hometown club without breaking into the first team.

In 2017 6ft 2in tall Mayounga, who is also yet to appear for the Wolves first team, became the youngest player ever to make an international appearance for the Central African Republic, aged 17 and one month, when he came on as a late sub in a 3-0 defeat to Algeria.

Also in Tuesday's U23s side was Aidan Barlow, a 20-year-old left midfielder previously with Manchester United’s academy.

Salford-born Barlow, who was previously a sub in last week's U23s game at Sheffield United, joined United aged six and came through the ranks before being released in the summer.

Barlow won England caps at U17 and U18 levels and spent a spell on loan on Norway in Tromsø in late 2019.

While he never broke into the first team at Old Trafford, he did join the senior squad for training in late 2018 under Jose Mourinho's management.

The third starting trialist was Portuguese-born midfielder Quevin Castro, who was previously on trial with the Blues in the summer of 2019, featuring for the U23s on a number of occasions.

Castro (pictured below), who has played locally with the likes of Thetford, Leiston, Bury Town, Mildenhall and Norwich CBS, said last year that Premier League West Ham and Leicester had been keeping tabs on him.

On the bench was Needham Market youngster Callum Page. The midfielder, a full-time member of the Marketmen’s academy scheme, signed a senior contract at Bloomfields in February having broken into their first team.

Looks like those big clubs weren't that interested in Castro after all . Seen him play for the u23s looked well off the pace. We should be looking at players that improve the team not just keep adding no hopers to the squad. The main area for concern is the lack of midfield ball winner's. We've got no chance of competing with the good sides in this division with the bunch of wimps we've got at the moment.

I am surprised and pleased that we are looking at new players, even if they are “frees”.

However, I would rather we sign one quality player than four mediocre ones.

It's good we are looking. We haven't signed any of them yet. But the more we look, the more chance we have of picking up someone who slipped through the net.

Randomly saw Barlow make his Tromso debut last year after I finished a cycling trip up there. Looked a confident wide player, willing to drive and take on defenders.

@Linkboy13
Call me old fashioned but the only way to ascertain whether a player is good enough is to see him in action - hence playing them in development matches. And just because a player isn't judged by a PL club to be good enough for them , it doesn't mean that they aren't good enough for the championship or L1.

Oh, your post is awful - have a word with yourself

Having watched the video of young Barlow, don't really see how he would fit in here, didn't see one back pass in the video.....even playing balls into space expecting people to run on to them, makes you wonder what they are teaching youngsters at other clubs. doesn't look like he has a clue where his defenders are !

MattinLondon you obviously have never played the game with that numpty comment. If you're happy with div one football sign them on, but these trailist journey men rarely come off and it costs the club money.

Ipswichbusiness, I agree 100%. I remember alot of people getting extremely excited when we signed 9 mediocre players in 2018. Look how that turned out.

If our youngsters are not better than this then perhaps we should give up?
BUT then evans and lambert would be the winners.

The main problem at the club is Evans it's that simple he never seems to learn from his mistakes just sticks by them and make matters worse
Lambert 5year deal honestly in league one ,then his deluded 5 point plan yep that's worked out well and so on ....

Watching Slumberland vs MK Dons. Slumberland are really not all that good, which makes that bloody penalty all the more annoying. Come on U Dons!

Tractorboybig i agree we tend to patronise our youngsters and say how great they are, but i cant think of one who is outstanding who would get me out of my seat, except possibly Dobra sometimes. Playing in Div one which is pretty average we should have at least three or four . Gone are the days when we produced internationals.

Having watched Castro several time playing for Mildenhall i would be surprised if he made any impact in league football .I'm not saying he does not have ability as at times he looks good but sorry ,not for me .

If we don't make it out of league one this year then there will be a number of players departing at the end of season (and some may say they should depart in any case), so we have to be planning for this possibility.

Judge, Huws, Skuse, Ward, Nsialia, Chambers, Wilson will be out of contract. Given salary cap and age and current deals and ability maybe Wilson will get an offer, Ward will depend on his ability to stay fit. Skuse and Chambers May have to take a dramatic cut.

McGuinness I think will have a great season for us and develop into a combatitive defender but Arsenal will be looking for him to play Championship football next year if he does well this season.

Woolfie and Downes are unlikely to stay another season in Division 3 and because of lack of income the club may have to look at letting them go for more modest amounts.

Bish's injury record could end up being a blessing in disguise and we may be able to do something to keep him when his contract expires. Andre if he continues his current form will be difficult to keep under a salary cap unless we can do something now to extend his contract.

Edwards if he maintains his existing form and goal scoring will undoubtedly attract championship interest as he will be out of contract.

So the ex Wolves lad and Manchester United lad are worth looking at as both are at the age where we are not constrained by salary cap, presumably looking for contracts so will not be that expensive and have some pedigree which might just be in areas where our academy hasn't made any recent breakthroughs. Whilst the Wolves lad can play left back and centre back we have struggled with left sided defenders of late. Although I would say Ndaba and Baggot could both eventually make it, I don't like criticising our young players but I think Myles Kenlock still has an enormous task of convincing everyone that he is ready to make the number 3 shirt his own.

Budieplucker; I agree with quite a lot of what you say. However, remember that the transfer market below Premier League level is likely to be very different over the next two or three windows as many clubs simply won't have much money due to the effects of Covid. Also, I wonder how long the salary cap will survive.

With regard to McGuiness, much may depend on his contract with Arsenal. He must know that he has little chance of breaking into their first team squad. Therefore, if he only say a year or two to go then we may have a chance if we want him.

Great essay budgieplucker, but we do still have 40+ players if all mentioned leave. If they are not good enough then why do we continue to pay them wages....let's resolve that before adding to the wage bill at a time where every penny spent is relevant under the salary cap.

blues1 added 15:49 - Nov 16
Portman terrorist. The point is, that the players they were looking at, wouldnt be affected by the salary cap as they're under 21. So if they were able to prove themselves good enough for this level, then should we, god forbid, fail to get promoted, then wed be able to sign them regardless of the salary cap. If it's still in place by then.
