O'Neill: Lambert's Job is Safe
Tuesday, 1st Dec 2020 10:54

Town general manager of football operations Lee O’Neill says owner Marcus Evans has no plans to make a managerial change despite being aware of fans’ frustrations regarding performances and results under boss Paul Lambert.

The Blues have lost seven of their last 10 in all competitions and five of their last eight in League One, dropping to sixth in the table ahead of tonight's game at Oxford United as a result.

Speaking to BBC Radio Suffolk as part of a longer interview being broadcast at 6pm this evening, O’Neill said owner Evans is well aware of supporters' concerns.

“He understands their frustration, obviously I communicate with him,” he said.

“He can hear and see things and see what’s around him and even though the supporters aren’t at the stadium there are ways that they have voiced their opinions.

“He’s aware of that and fully supportive in trying to help the football club get back to the better times.”

martin587 They didn't issue a statement, it was just a response to a question in an interview.

Dejavu re Keane,Jewell,McCarthy,Hurst & now Lambert...our owner just does not have a clue when it comes to picking the right man for the job (apart from McCarthy's salvage job in 2012)...he got rid of the right man right at the very beginning (Magilton) and has been cocking it up ever since.

Lightningboy, agreed. Magilton was doing well, especially on a limited budget before Evans arrived. And then the sacking of magilton by Evans? Less said about that the better. One thing I will definitely say for jim, is that we were playing more attractive/better football under him than any other town manager since he was sacked in my opinion.

blue86 - no, far from it.
Ive been a season ticket holder since '88 so seen good times and bad times over the last 32 years.
I am just trying to be realistic about where the club currently is. Its not as simple as saying its all ME's fault and everything would be fine if he wasnt here.
The fact is that he is the clubs owner and finances the club every year with an eye-watering amount of money.
Just think, if you won £100m on the lottery and brought ITFC, paying off the debts we owe, that would almost instantly wipe out your winnings, you'd be bankrupt overnight and the club would fold in the same way as others have recently.
Quite a sobering thought............

Tones cones, you make some valid points. You have to admit though Evan's time here, so far has been a poor period of towns history. As I said the last ten years have been awful to say the least. If i won 100 million on the lottery as you say ,the fact is I wouldnt have enough to fund a football club like town, especially with its huge debt which has rocketed under Evan's. All of us fans want what's best for the club at the end of the day, but it's been like being in a abusive relationship for quite a while now! There are owners with alot less than Evans though who make it work, it's about being smart with recruitment etc. I just fear Lambert isnt up to it, and I'm concerned when that wage cap really starts to bite it will be 100 times harder to get out of this league. Being a fan is about hope, not just saying I'm glad we still exist. I know one thing, when and if our luck does change surely it will be amazing wont it? Lol

blue86 - it certainly will!
Always remember to enjoy the highs when they arrive as they can be a long time coming but only stay for a short period!

And wtf do you do ? Apart from suck up to the tax dodger. Shambert has to go he's a dead man walking with 4 years left on his contract. And you can go with him pointless role you do that adds zero to our results. The owner is a joke how he uses ITFC for his own personal gain. All 3 of you need to go and bring in a manager with our club in his heart !!!!

Tones cones, being a town fan we havent had many highs of late, tell you what would be worse though..... being one of those plastic Chelsea, man city type of fans. Atleast we genuinely care for our club, we live in hope.

tones_cones, At last some with a reasoned opinion. how all these so called Ipswich supporters can expect good football/ results when lambert has almost a whole first team injurjed is beyond me. These are I suppose the same set of so called supporters that were crying out for Lambert to play our own youngsters, now he has to they dont like the football/results any better. be patient all will com good., But then we wont be hearing from you will we.

Two pieces of interesting news!!

Apparently McCarthy reckoned Marcus Evans was the most astute business man he's known. The problem is that running a football club is not like running any other business and sadly ME has made lots of mistakes.

Secondly I was also told that the power behind the throne when Lambert was successful at Norwich was Ian Culverhouse and just look what he's doing at Kings Lynn.

Unfortunately Lambert has no plan B or tactical nous, although apparently he learnt his trade at some top top sides in Scotland and Germany, so we've got nothing to worry about!!

Chronic failure and underachievement is fine with Ipswich Town. Joke club

My opinion about the 5 year contract is that therefor the good or bad that there is a long term plan being carried out. The only thing I can think of is that they are going to concentrate on the Academy. Lambert has already used more players in the league than anyone since Bobby Robson. If such a plan works it would be great, but I can't see it working unless we become a Level 1 Academy with the advantages that it gives.

if O'Neill had anything about him he'd tell Mr Evans a change is a must. He hasn't so the shambles will continue

his job is safe is all you coulfd realistically expect him to say lets just prey its not so, and its the vote of cofidence kiss of death . Failing that i seriously think Evans will just go on to kill the club .

Blue86 - At least Jim could get us a win over Norwich.......maybe that is why he was sacked? I can't remember that far back, but maybe we also won a cup game that season too?

blue86 added 17:30 - Dec 1
Allezlesbleus, yes I remember that win well. Dos Santos ran the show that day. I might be wrong but think jim might have been sacked after that game? Madness.

Let's hope Evans is disgusted with himself. Shocking decision to give PL a five year deal is as expected proving costly. 99% of clubs would have sacked Lambert long before now. Dire.

The soap opera/farce that I.T.F.C. has turned into is a disgrace we are a rudderless ship from top to bottom and in need of urgent surgery(the answer is not the 4&8 combo as managers although their departed big gob mate was endorsing it) it's obvious that the only direction we are going in is downhill but nobody seems to give a flyer(true fans excepted) i would like to be proved wrong but won't hold my breath, i have seen many ups and downs since my 1st match in 1958 but cannot in all honesty see this slide being stopped.

Blue86 indeed it was Jim's last game. Deeply ironic we've not beaten them since. Awful decision from Evans and he's been slowly fcukin the club up since. (No he didn't save us, we were out of administration.)

So what does the owner actually want for his club? Does he want it to proper and improve, becoming a club that can attract young and exciting players? One where the fans are totally on board with everything, and everyone is pulling in the same direction to achieve something good? Or does he just want to let it continue to be a club that's been forgotten about, with little or no prospect of improvement, unable to attract players and fan alike? Seems pretty clear that giving this knob a 5 year contract with his track record of p1ss poor success as a manager, he clearly doesn't care where we end up. No manager should ever be given a contract of that length at a club in freefall. Dreadful all round.

another way of looking at is the job is safe ,but Lambert may not be doing it , we have to have some hope !

I can't believe I am hearing this?! How can his job be secure?! If we wait any longer we will lose out on the pool of managers that are available. This comment from O'Neil just about sums up the where we are as a club. An absolute joke! This Club needs ripping out top to bottom!

A five year contract to another has been manager is just another mistake that our owner makes and another reason this once well respected and family club are in decline. Even the guardian made a piece on us about our decline not stagnation but decline! Evans sees what he wants to see and hears what he wants to hear that's why we should as a fan base get more vocal at him the centre piece, vocal point and real issue at the club
