Lambert: A Win's a Win But it Won't Change the Negativity
Saturday, 5th Dec 2020 18:19

A win’s a win was manager Paul Lambert’s assessment after Town came from behind to beat 10-man Plymouth 2-1 at Home Park but believes the victory won’t “change the negativity” he said was attached to the club earlier in the week.

Jon Nolan and Kayden Jackson netted two goals in two minutes to see the Blues to the win after the Pilgrims had been reduced to 10 men after Danny Mayor’s red card.

Having seen the draw at Oxford as a step in the right direction, Lambert was asked whether he viewed today’s win as another.

“Yes, it’s a win, it’s a win,” he said. We move on to the next game.”

Was he happy with the performance? “Yes, we’re sitting third, I think, joint-third. That’s not bad. We move on.”

Was he not taken with the display? “No, there’s just things going through my head, it’s fine, it’s OK.”

Quizzed on whether he was pleased with the resilience his team showed to turn the game around, he responded: “As I said before, I’m proud of the guys, the way we play good football when we’ve so many problems back home.

“We had a good game, we didn’t deserve to be down 1-0. We should have had a penalty, that was incredible. The guys deserve so much credit.”

Asked how much character it took to stage the comeback, he said: “[From] the team, yes, but we’ll not change the negativity, not change it. But for those guys, brilliant.

“We lost two games and I think everybody thought we were going to sink to the bottom of the table and we’re sitting third.

“We don’t have the guys in the treatment room, they’re still to come back. We’ve so many guys injured, big guys. It’s not as if it’s the young guys you don’t rely on, it’s big guys that make a massive contribution. Will it change the negativity? No it won’t.”

Lambert had asked for his side to be more ruthless in both boxes and Nolan and Jackson both took their opportunities clinically.

“Great. I thought we started the game really well, we dominated the ball and they sat off us and they got a goal with their first real attack,” he said.

“We should have had a penalty [when Jack Lankester was fouled], how it wasn't a penalty I don’t know.

“And then it was just a matter of keeping doing what they were doing and try to force the game and then getting the goals, we were getting in some great areas. The contribution from the sub guys was big, we made the right calls and we got the win.”

Regarding the finishes, he added: “Nolo was really good, Nolan’s busy, he’s really good. Kayden, I thought maybe should have pulled the trigger in the first half when he was played right through. But the kid’s not played much football, so he’s still trying to find his feet. I thought his goal was excellent. Very good.”

Did he feel his side was getting on top even before Mayor, who Lambert tried to bring to Portman Road after he left Bury in the summer of 2019, was dismissed? “Yes, in the first half they were dropping off and we were getting in some good areas.

“I thought Kayden maybe should have pulled the trigger earlier than he should. Dobs should have done better when he went through [just before half-time], so there were good moments there, good possibilities. But it was just a matter of keeping going and keeping going.”

Lambert was pleased with Armando Dobra’s lively display, the Albanian U21 international having drawn the foul which led to Mayor’s red card.

“Yes, I think that’s what you get with him,” he said. “I think Dobs at the minute still plays street football, that’s probably a compliment to him. He plays street football.

Lambert says Aaron Drinan missed out having joined the already lengthy injury list: “That was bizarre because it was a recovery day so he never trained with us. He just felt a little twinge in his hamstring. As I’ve said to you, you can have all the best medical team in the world and things like that happen.”

Asked whether there is any chance of anyone being back for next week’s home game against Portsmouth, he said: “I don’t think so, no. I don’t know if any will come back. I don’t see it.”

One piece of good news yesterday was Andre Dozzell signing a new contract which runs to the summer of 2024.

“Yes, I never knew until yesterday morning,” Lambert said. “Great for the club because we don’t have the money to go and buy guys and Andre at 20 years old is getting better and better and better. He’s still developing.

“The club can’t go out and buy somebody in this environment. He’s a really good footballer.”

Lambert agreed that the 21-year-old has come on since becoming a regular in the side this season.

“Yes, without a doubt,” he said. “I think people forget when they look at him. He’s every bit as young as Luke Woolfenden, he’s a young guy who is learning and developing and he’s got to get physically stronger, which he will as he gets older. And he’ll get better. But regarding being a footballer, he’s got all the attributes.”

How good can the former England U20 international be? “Only he’ll decide how his future’s going to go but he’s a really good kid, a good footballer and hopefully his career goes the right way.”

Asked what the win means to him, he said: “I know what it means to me and to the guys and the staff. I know what it means to them.

“We came here, we had the team that we have and the guys that we have at the minute, it’s incredible how they’re doing. We just keep trying.”

Having said the win won’t change the negativity, Lambert was asked what would. A run of wins? “No, I know what needs to be changed but I’ll keep those thoughts to myself.”

Lets hope none of the Big European clubs are watching, or they want to make an offer for this tactical genius.

Main tactics, let them score first and the win it with a penalty, an OG, or a sending off.

A genius in his own hankychief.

WTF is he going on about at the end? He is just going to make the uncertainty and negativity continue with statements like that. Can only see it further damaging morale. For someone who “won't wilt” he seems to be unable to raise himself

Oh dear. What a persecution complex! Point scoring at who? Come on PL. you must know you're losing a good number of fans, the very people you wanted to regain when you joined us. Time to enjoy a win, especially in the current circumstances. Stop the silliness.

Naff off! Londontractor boy! - you don't even support the club anymore and say the same continuous thing...

We've looked better playing 4-4-2 in the last 3 matches, but the sending off definitely changed things today. Of course things will remain negative because the general performances, style of play and negative tactics haven't changed... and a home defeat to Pompey on Saturday will compound this. Start with 4-4-2, get the team to move the ball quicker and mix up the passing with a touch of Mick Hoofball and we might just have a chance on Saturday!

Europablue made an excellent comment.

Performances will lead to positivity.....because invariably a good performance.....not just passing around it the back...... but men in the box, creating chances, shooting, scoring goals....is entertaining.....creates confidence.....will lead to wins....and that will lead to promotion. Most of us will put up with the insipid comments then. I have nothing personal against Lambert, i dont know him for heavens sake. I form my opinion on his performance.....which hasnt met expectation whatsoever. Having watched a vast number of games last season and most of Ifollow this season...i fail to see how having a full squad to pick from is suddenly going to transform us under Lamberts tactical limitations. Some fans really need to watch the games and look at the stats. However, I do think we have the players to get us promoted and if Lambert can stop being so one dimensional then we have a chance.

Will support the team and its great to see younger players holding their own, building for the future.

Lambert you sound like McCarthy with his inane ramblings post match...it shows how out of touch you have become...injuries, covid disruption, fitness, games congestion aside you have handled yourself woefully...Ipswich fans are desperate for green shoots ...anything to hang their hat on, but you mug them off....I'm born and bred Ipswich, my family is three generations of ITFC and you mug us off with your cryptic, suggestive statements...you do loyal, passionate fans a disservice when you repeatedly spout such post match missives....trust me, we understand the complexities of which you are operating to...but understand there are questions too..how can you think banning a media representative a good idea...
Like Blue Action said...the bar is calling time...despite the eloquent Marcus statement

We won, what more do some supporters want? To lose ? I if I was a manager not to be treated so badly. He is a human being, and this constant bullying is wrong. He's trying his hardest in the circumstances .

The negativity will only change when we start looking convincing when we win. At the moment we don't look like a team that will get promoted. Even when most of the squad are fit we still haven't beaten a top team. Most fans don't really see the bigger picture and don't care how we play as long as we win.

Probably get a 10 year one now!

I wish he'd stop using they're only young excuse, because it is just that, if your good enough your old enough like, Rooney, Owen, Gomez, Arnold, Sterling, rashford etc etc etc who all play/played a lot higher than league 3 for a lot bigger clubs than even PL played for and we're all younger than Dozzell at least.
And played lots of games

well done for the three points today
the negativity is largely down to differences of opinion over what constitutes playing well at the minute which we've all heard recently a lot
playing out from our six yard box and keeping the ball in our third leading to not really having a shot on target during 90 minutes isn't everybody's idea of playing really well and dominating the ball
that said the negativity on this site is way over the top
people jump on the bandwagon
when Lambert came he was a breath of fresh air 99% would agree
he's changed the style from hoofball to playing it largely on the deck which 99% of us wanted
he's given the young academy lads a chance (partly choice part necessity) which most of us craved
we're third in the league and 90% of people who expressed a preference want him out
we all want to see the club back in the top flight eventually including Evans and Lambert but this all seems the wrong way to go about it
Paul Lambert is laying foundations for our club
no short term fix
what he is trying to do is the right thing by the club
the youngsters and the future of the club will be better for it
when the foundations are set the team can build from that
but in the mean time the keyboard warriors are doing nothing but harm in my opinion
it's frustrating a lot of the time but we don't need to turn the clock back 3 years
back the club all the way back to the top where we want to be

Three points AWAY WIN!

That is all we need to think about tonight FULL STOP (and to keep SUPPORTING the club without protests and boycotts)

Any one hear Marcus Stewart on BBC Radio Suffolk say NOW is the time to support and get behind the players AND STAFF. If we can't listen to and accept Marcus Stewart knows what a player thinks then what have we become?

Can PL not do these interview's? I wouldn't want to with all this negativity that is spurted on here. Matter fact this site should be banned from anything ITFC, I really don't think it's helping the club who were right to ban TWTD for breaching the rules by the way. Anyway 3rd in the league, with a injury hit squad, playing tidy football is what everyone called for when they outed Mick .. oh hold on a minute be careful what you wish for, don't the moaning snowflakes hate it they got it all wrong but so embarrassed to admit it.

SickParrot added 20:25 - Dec 5
By negativity PL (like McCarthy) means anyone who dares to suggest that he's not the most underrated manager ever. Yes, a win is a win (and we certainly needed it) but we didn't score and were losing until the sending off. You're correct, the 'negativity' won't change just because we beat a poor team with 10 men. What would do it is if we played exciting, attacking football and won more often.
4

BettyBlue added 20:28 - Dec 5
you beat a mid table side unconvincingly with 10 men bravo paul.

what do you want? more money?

do you remember we were in the championship when you took over

and now we have to forget promotion and rejoice in beating 10 men Plymouth??

Portsmouth, silent on that game no wonder.. you are all talk... and no action like our players..

Judge...you're having a laugh

Really. who's fault is that Einstein??

“No, I know what needs to be changed but I'll keep those thoughts to myself.”

Yes you need to go but you won't for less than £3million and Evans won't pay and that's what's really miffed you.
