Argyle Boss Lowe to Speak to Referees' Chief About Mayor Dismissal
Sunday, 6th Dec 2020 00:44

Plymouth manager Ryan Lowe says he will speak to referees’ chief Mike Jones regarding Ollie Yates following Danny Mayor’s dismissal for two bookable offences during Town’s 2-1 win at Home Park.

Mayor, who came close to joining the Blues in the summer of 2019 before opting to sign for Argyle, was sent off in the 70th minute for a deliberate trip on Armando Dobra having previously been booked for time-wasting as he took a corner.

“I thought the performance was excellent up to 70 minutes and then we have obviously got to talk about the second yellow,” Lowe told Plymouth Live.

“I have just had a word with the referee. I thought it was harsh. We have looked at the video back, the first booking for Danny they are encroaching.

“They are six or seven yards out and Danny is asking for 10 yards. He’s not given it and he [Yates] has come over and booked him.

“It was a stupid yellow card from the referee’s point of view to give to my player. I have just said to him I will be speaking to Mike Jones [the national group director of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL)] regarding it because it has cost us all three points.”

Lowe believes the dismissal played a role in both Town goals: “They have scored two good goals but where Jon Nolan is, just inside the 18-yard box, Danny Mayor would have been there.

“We tried to shuffle across. Tyrese [Fornah] and Panutche [Camara] were there but when you are missing a man and a bit of quality comes into the box and it’s set for a player like Jon Nolan, he’s definitely going to find the net, and that’s what happened.

“For the second one, the striker has chested it down and that’s where Tyrese would have been, in front of the centre-forward [Jackson].

“We didn’t regroup from the first one. We probably should have either kept the ball or went in behind, but we lost it again.

“But when you are down to 10 men against a possession-based team like Ipswich you are always going to come unstuck.”

Despite being set to report Yates to his bosses, he says he has a lot of time for the Staffordshire-based official: “I think this will be the second time I have complained about a referee, and he’s a good lad Ollie, I have got a lot of respect for him.

“He has refereed us loads of times. Early on in the game, they were asking for a few fouls and I thought ‘You know what, this is going okay because he’s letting it flow’.

“That’s what you want. You don’t want stop-start. He [Yates] has said ‘Ryan, I will have a look at it. If that’s the case then I will hold my hand up and apologise’.

“But it’s too late isn’t it because I feel if we keep Danny Mayor on the pitch and their player gets booked for encroaching at the corner then we go on and win the game, no question. When you lose one of your players it’s always hard isn’t it?”

Reflecting further, the former Bury boss added: “I have got no qualms about the second yellow card. What he could have done, he could have looked at it and gone ‘Okay that was a silly first yellow card, I will just have a word with him’ and he never.

“I’m aggrieved with the first one because when you watch it back they are nowhere near 10 yards and then they encroach — nine, eight and you can literally see it, he [Mayor] can’t pass it.

“Danny was ready to pass, and why would we be wasting time when we are on the attack from a corner?”

Maybe he can mention the stonewall penalty that would have seen us go 1 up as well.

Can they rescind the red card just by revoking the first yellow card? Because it was honestly a ridiculous yellow card to give out. But then again, fancy deliberately tripping a player from behind while on a yellow card!

Refereeing, in general, needs a huge shakeup, the level of incompetence could cause pollution it's that bad.

Ref was mugged off. Judge was in his ear as the players came out for the second half, stop the time wasting. Ref bought it hook line and sinker for first yellow. You can't coach that.

Win some decisions, lose others. We've been on the receiving end of poor referring decisions on countless occasions this season.

That said, the sending off definitely changed the game!

Welcome to our world. Plymouth! And when you have your “little word”, make sure to mention the one your team got away with on 6mins won't you, when Lankester was denied a stonewall penalty? You'll do that for us now, won't you ??

I think the first card was harsh, but Mayor had been booked and made a stupid challenge to get the second yellow - he has to play the game to the situation.

Their number 2 put an awful tackle in on Lankester after about 1 minute which was as clear a yellow as you'll see all season, he didn't get one and subsequently got a yellow in second half, which should have been his second.

You have to assume that he wouldn't have made that tackle had he already been booked as would have been smart enough not to, in the same way Mayor should have been.

Also, the penalty he denies was as clear as any you will see all season for us

Strange he didnt mention the penalty we should have had! The player gave the referee no choice it was a second bookable offence, and Lowe says the referee should have over looked the second because the first was not a booking, really? so what would Lowe have thought if the ref gave us a penalty for a perfectly good challenge in the second half to make up for not giving us one in 1st half!

Lowe also refers to our goals as sitters, actually both good finishes especially Nolans!!!

The standard of refereeing is really crap another reason we need out of division1, but it is crap for everyone and i feel that we have more than our fair share of bad ref decisions!

I hate deluded managers, we have one, Lowe is another one and whilst the sending off did alter the game not giving us a stonewall penalty altered the game .Dont just pick out the ref decisions that didnt go your way!

Live with it Lowe.

I'm going to be an absolute dick here so sorry dissboy in advance but we're not in division 1, we're in league 1. Depending on your age division 1 is either the premier league or the championship.

And while we're here, when we lose a game of football we do not loose, we lose. Loose rhymes with goose. Lose rhymes with booze

Yes, I know I'm a sad loser.lol

Naivety from Mayor I'm afraid. Absolutely no chance in an appeal. I dont really buy his opinion on how it changed the game either tbh. As a manager you should immediately re shuffle your pack when you go down to 10. If Mayor wasn't covering then somebody else should have been. As much Ryan Lowe's fault as any of his players. 10 men should be less likely to score, not more likely to concede. They had a lead to protect and failed.

Plymouth were time wasting almost from the moment they scored, the corner was clearly not the first time they'd delayed the game, they stood in front of every free kick, kicked the ball away 5 or 6 times and in the end the ref had, had enough. I could see the card coming, he took an age getting the ball in, and once he'd faked taking a short one, you cant blame the town players for following their men inside 10 yards. At that point he was trying to be cute and using the encroachment rule to waste more time. Given how they ended the match pushing for an equaliser, their time wasting early on seems a bit daft now.

Maybe the sending off was harsh, but as far as I could tell, the ball didn't cross the line for their goal, and as others have said we should have had a penalty. It usually balances after a season, but this one appears to have balanced across the game.

Hold on. Whether the first booking was unjust or not, the player knew he was on a yellow, as did the manager, so his argument is invalid as to it affecting the outcome of the match. If the manager was that concerned he should have substituted him.

Ha is that the first stroke of luck we've had we were pretty rubbish Plymouth commentators were amazed it wasn't a Penalty, the good points goals taken very well,if we could just get Dobra and Bennett going they could be a force, But tippytappy football at the back doesn't work but that's my opinion

An up vote for your rhyme Suffolk_and_proud 😁

Had we been on the reverse of these decisions there would be uproar on this site.

As for the officials, they are of third division ( league one Suffolk_and_proud ) standard, as are the teams, as is the standard of football.

We've had it worse than anyone in this league for ref decisions this seasons!
If not for that we'd have been top 2 right now.

Bore off Ryan....go and tell someone that gives a f#ck... he should be on the end of some of the decisions we've had go against us...then he can rightly moan...

When he looks at the bookings again I think he will change his mind. Both were entirely justifiable.

I just wish there were a few more managers like Bielsa: "I never question the referee's decision. Refereeing did not change the game" [vs Chelski].
