McCarthy Sacked By APOEL
Wednesday, 6th Jan 2021 10:31

Former Town boss Mick McCarthy has been sacked by Cypriot side APOEL after only two months following four successive defeats.

McCarthy took charge at APOEL on November 2nd with his Blues assistant Terry Connor joining him, the pair signing contracts until 2022.

APOEL, who have had 14 managers in the last five years and are now 11th in the Cypriot First Division, one point off the relegation zone, issued a statement on their website this morning in the wake of yesterday’s 2-1 defeat at Doxa.

“APOEL announces the end of its cooperation with coach Mick McCarthy,” it reads. "We wish Mr McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor good luck.”

Last week ex-Town striker Joe Garner was added to their playing staff from Wigan, while they signed Irish international midfielder Jack Byrne from Shamrock Rovers on Monday.

MM has had his day. Two good seasons with us and two very poor seasons where crowds were scarce and those that attended went away disappointed by what they'd seen. He should retire gracefully imo. TC May cut it as a coach somewhere as I've heard pretty good reports on him.
Football has moved on so much now and I'm afraid too many old school managers are being left behind. I include PL in this statement albeit he did a fantastic job getting the fans back onside and filling the stadium.

I remember watching Eire labouring to a 1-0 win over Gibraltar on TV and it crossed my mind he'd never change. I wonder now that he passed his best before date during his time with us, post 2015 at a guess. Yep, change was needed when he left, and we got it. Just not the right one.

Lathers - crystal balls are only needed if it's not damn obvious what's going to happen. I'm guessing you were one of those hounding him out and now scratching around for excuses not to regret your actions.

i do not post on here very often, i used to sit in upper sir alf stand not any more it was like watching paint dry what that man passed off as entertainment. the sole reason we are where we are is the man who owns this club, essexnblue pointed the players sold by us at a profit and money not put back into first team squad, year on year diluting of the quality. the man said himself his only remit was to keep club in the championship, no ambition from mr evans that's why i do not go anymore and i first saw us play in 1960. that's why we are division three.

MonkeyAlan; his job was to get us promoted to the Premiership. He didn't.

We may well still be in the Championship if Mick had stayed, however you would have had the reduced attendance of around 2000 spectators way before Covid arrived. There were very few people there at the end of Micks tenure...and getting less by the week.
EssexBlue, I am not sure we made any money whatsoever out of Waghorn, Garner, Berra (all went for nothing) and very little out of Moore who is now an international...after he proved Mick wrong and was promptly shown the door.
What we would give now for Keifer Moore.
Would not play Celina because us numbskulls wanted him to play.
Webster, and McGoldrick were 'sick notes' ...until they move away and now play every week in the Premier League

It never ceases to amaze me how much interest MM articles get from Town fans.....still! There have been a few articles today, some about the wellbeing of staff and players, some about a promising young player. None of which get nearly as much attention!

Good to see Mick's still weaving his magic. If you check his record i think you'll find it's not that impressive very overated would be an understatement.

Correct Essexblue. If only fans had turned their rage against the real reason for our lack of success, ME.
Cheshire - yeah but had we stuck with MM crowds would have been down to 7k pre Covid. He worked miracles with his budget but you can't make a silk purse out of a soes ear, until ME has gone we will continue to fail.

Sacked after two months? Dreadful and disrespectful.

That said, there should be a nice payoff!

Good luck from me to Mick McCarthy. We all know we made a booboo letting him go even when our football was dire. Maybe should have given him one more season. But hey!!

Feel sorry for Garner. No one told him how hard some of the provincial pitches will be.....all that falling down will hurt over there. As for MM, knowing Apoel and as I said at the time....a marriage made in hell. Mick got out in one piece, got some cash and moves on, but who really cares?

Mick was a good manager did what was needed on limited funds. By the end his time was up, see if you can go to work tell the customers to F off see how that will end! I still feel if mick had the money we would of gone up. We gambled with Hurst and bust,

Cheshire ''you reap what you sow '' yep a good saying . Try to remember that when defending Evan's and the state we are in, Along with the crap we are expected to watch, and wasted opportunities over the years. Yes indeed ''you reap what you sow ''

I still don't know how the animosity got so bad with McCarthy.

I was one who wanted him out at the time and I still think it was the right decision because we needed a change of scenery and a new direction to head in. However I still think McCarthy did a great job here and wish he was given the money that Keane and Jewell had wasted before him.

On the flip side, I certainly think he milks it in the press with how he was treated here because he brought a lot of it on himself with some comments he made over the years and for 5/6 years he was treated with a lot of love and respect.
