Sears Linked With Colchester Return
Monday, 11th Jan 2021 10:15

Striker Freddie Sears is being linked with a return to his old club Colchester United.

Sears joined the Blues from the U’s in January 2015 and, according to the Colchester Gazette, the League Two club are keen to bring him back to the JobServe Community Stadium.

The 31-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, although with the Blues having an option for a further season.

Sears was left out of the 18 on Saturday having recovered from the hamstring injury which had kept him out of action prior to Town's unexpected Christmas break due to positive Covid-19 tests. However, we understand no deal has been done or is close to being done and any interest is in its early stages.

While the Blues are looking to offload senior players in order to add to their squad during January, Colchester might have trouble persuading Sears to move to League Two with the striker having said in September that he believes he can still play higher than League One.

“I know what I can do in this league,” he said after scoring twice in Town’s opening day 3-0 Carabao Cup victory over Bristol Rovers. “If I’m honest I think I’m too good for this league, I’ve been there before, I did it with Colchester.”

The U’s are looking for strikers with Luke Norris having moved to Stevenage last week. Manager Steve Ball said: "There's very much scope for us to bring someone in to replace Luke.

"There's a process in place where when we know that people might be leaving or there are potential sales of players, we've got things in place ready to go and that's something which our team have worked hard on, to have that in place to act.

"We're at that moment now to make the right choice and we have obviously have targets we want to have a look at. We will do that, as we move through the window.

"There are discussions taking place right now and that's happening every day with clubs, agents and the players themselves.

"Those things are moving and once it's agreed and we can press the button on it, then I'm sure we will.”

Sears has made 146 starts and 55 sub appearances for the Blues, scoring 34 times. This season the former West Ham youngster has made 11 starts and has scored three times.

If he moves on he'll probably excel somewhere else.

Too good for league one? Have a long hard look at yourself, effort is there but that's all. Take Chambers with you, another liability.

He might actually be played in his correct position elsewhere, something this club seems completely unable to do.

Deluded, league one player at best

This for me sums up the whole club for last 5 years , all think they are a lot better than they are . All this we played well , and we were excellent nonsense after repeated bad performances have led to this

The lad has been played out of position for almost all the time he has been here and has never been given a chance as a number 9.Good luck to him if this is true.

For a striker his goal tally has been woeful, and it hasn't made any difference which position he's played in

Should have been given the thanks for all your efforts and we wish you well elsewhere atleast a couple of seasons agon along with a few others

But when you have an owner who keeps selling the silverware and replacing it with plastic knifes and forks this is where you are going to end up at

If he goes, they will play him where he is meant to be played (CF) and he WILL score goals. More complete failure from ITFC management and not playing to our strengths and using players where they should be used.

Yet another player who had been ruined by constantly being played out of position . Started by McCarthy who insisted he was a wide player when he is clearly a central striker playing off the shoulder of the CB. I wish him well and I can see him doing good played in his correct position at another club. Time for player and club to go their separate ways now.

Sears like several of our players have the opinion that they are too good for this league when the fact is at best this is their level.

Unlike some on here I will not be rude about a player who has always given 110% when he has played for us and often in a role he is not suited for. He is without doubt a talented player and if he goes I for one will be sad to see that happen.

As part of a striking pair, he still has much to offer, but 2 strikers is too much to hope for under Lambert.

His absence from the match-day team against Swindon, with Zanda Siziba in instead, makes me think this is probably going to happen. It would be a shame to see Freddie Sears go, as he has always done a good job for the club, even if he has not been at his best since the long-term injury. However, if he is going to leave, I am glad that he is going to Colchester. I have always liked Colchester because of all the ex-Ipswich players that go there.

Obviously he has gotten older & had a couple of injuries since, but he scored bags of goals for Colchester, & was brilliant for us as a forward alongside Murphy in his first (half) season with us. I'm pretty sure he was in double figures goalwise from January on, while Murphy was banging them in too, in the Championship. He was brought in to cover for McGoldrick & we didn't miss him at all, which is quite a compliment given that McGoldrick was seen as £7m+ Premier League striker at that time.
Of course the problems came when trying to fit all 3 into the team after that & Sears got sacrificed to the wing, which continued when new forwards were brought in.
At only 31, he is surely capable of better than League 2; but not for the first time, we have taken a good footballer & played him out of position for so long, that he has lost his confidence to such an extent that his instincts as a striker (positions/runs/finishing) are a shadow of what they were.

Sears HAS to be played up front in a 442, be it flat or a diamond, otherwise you won't get much out of him, period. I really like Sears and do feel sorry for him - he should have moved on long ago, but he's gone through countless managers who insist on playing him out wide. I think he'd do a job up top with Norwood. They're both willing to run and JN seems to have an idea of how to bring his teammates into the game.

There can be absolutely no doubt about this man's determination ,nor of his character, or of his willingness and ability to give his all in the cause . A really good professional ,and good hearted and enthusiastic .
PL has some hard decisions to take , not least perhaps about his own very apparent inabilities ,and stubborn resistance to flexible thinking – about many aspects !
FS has suffered uncomplainingly , played anywhere and everywhere except obviously as one of a front pair charged with scoring goals ( which WE simply can't find for love nor money ) . The
It's very sad to witness a Manager wearing blinkers ,seemingly defensive about most aspects but NOT seeming willing to accept lots IS either wrong , or certainly not functioning correctly ; and without descending into criticising any individual this squad ,and playing unit definitely lacks heart and fire .
The damp squib is Lambert , he carries both the responsibility and the accountability : both ME and LO'N need to shake things up !
Meanwhile every good wish to Freddie who has suffered decisive injuries but fought back now to near full fitness –OR does PL know otherwise and seeks a sleight of hand ?

Have always liked Freddie & his work rate...shame he's not been his best since that bad injury 2 years ago & a shame he's never been played as an out & out striker in a front 2...should be knocking in 15 goals a season at this level but our management team simply cannot get anything out of our strike force with the 433 which is simply not working.

I'd rather Sears here & a new manager to get the best out of him.

Mccarthy ruined him by playing him on the wing if he leaves watch him score for fun

People have very short memories he went over 30 games without scoring so McCarthy had to find him a different role in the team which he carried out well. But i suppose if he's one of your favourites you have to try and make a case for him.

has not been used well imo , he will score goals played in his right position and given regular place not f#cked about from ship to shore as he has been .Im surprised he didnt want away long ago . Good luck to him if he moves on which is likely now.Lets face it the whole team is a shambles and it wont improve with Lambert.

Who goes to games on this site? When has Freddie been played up top for a run of games and NOT delivered goals? Check your stats before you reply as whilst he may not be the best winger or LF, and whilst he may sometimes struggle when played upfront on his own (esp when we knock balls up to him in the air....and we have), if you put him up top in 4-4-2 formation then stats show he will deliver.

Under the current management we "cannot" play with 2 up top, have better lone strikers, so he should leave and do so knowing he served as well as anyone over these past desperately poor years.

Sears has been woefully managed for the majority of this town career, he's been a casualty of our one up top and painfully slow build up play culture!
I still think he's got a little bit more about him compared to some of out other options, I just wish we'd seen him played along side someone up top more often.
lets use the wage space to tie Edwards down to a new deal firstly and now we cant spend on playing staff I hope we see some investment in the infrastructure of the club, especially the sport science/medical staff!

The stats don't lie has never been a prolific scorer throughout his career most goals in a season being 12 dont have to go to games to check that out.
