Leeds and West Ham Baggott Talks Claim
Tuesday, 12th Jan 2021 09:38

Leeds and West Ham continue to be linked with Blues youngster Elkan Baggott with claims that the Indonesia U19 international could be available for between £150,000 and £300,000 in compensation during the January transfer window.

Last week it was reported that the two Premier League clubs are eyeing Baggott after the centre-half turned down the offer of a professional contract with the Blues.

Now, according to Football Insider, who behind the previous story, the Whites and Hammers have held preliminary talks regarding Baggott who they have been told will cost between £150,000 and £300,000.

However, TWTD understands Baggott has not turned down Town’s contract offer, although has asked for time to consider the deal.

The 6ft 4in tall defender is currently a second-year scholar with an agreement for a third year in the academy already in place and Town are confident he will ultimately put pen to paper on pro terms. It also seems unlikely that the Blues would have named a price in the manner suggested.

The Thailand-born defender made his first-team debut in the Papa John’s Trophy tie at home to Gillingham earlier this season and travelled with the senior squad for the League One fixture at Plymouth last month.

Baggott has been one of the top performers for the Blues' U18s who have reached the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup this season.

Last week, former Blues striker Darren Bent said he had been impressed with what he has seen of Baggott.

No great surprise is it?

A choice between two Premier League clubs or a failing Third Division club owned by a chancer with no ambition. I think I can probably guess how this will turn out and who can blame the lad!

Something needs to be done about this sort of thing. We're constantly wasting our time developing young players to the point of being close to first team football and then losing them for peanuts to bigger clubs.

I think Ipswich are offering a clear route through to the 1st team for these youngsters now. It is fairly clear, the majority of players that end up in the Premiership 1st teams have built up their playing time in the other leagues first.

I can only think that if these youngsters seriously think they will be better off going to another club to be loaned out left, right and centre, then they are being badly advised.

So, is this where he leaves for 150k, doesn't make any first team appearances for Leeds, but then moves on to Cardiff or someone a year later for £2million? But it's ok, because we get 1% of that profit as a ‘well negotiated' sell-on fee?

What odds on this most likely being a case of the agent talking up interest in order to try and pressure Town into upping their offer?

Importantly ,at this juncture , just who will be involved in such decision making ?
Right now it's fair to say there doesn't appear to be much faith that PL is taking , let alone making important decisions , and may well be losing the dressing room .
It is vital that the ITFC pathways and decision processes are crystal clear to everyone within the Club : unity ,purpose ,belief and integrity have been a part of the Ipswich ways ,let's hope we see the same returning ,and soon !
A disturbed and uncertain atmosphere is absolutely no recommendation for the up and coming !

£150 to £300k is chicken feed to a Premier League side. It's a small calculated gamble for them to take. There should be conditions attached that if the player makes the grade and makes a certain number of appearances in the Premier League that we then get a subsequent far greater settlement on top.
Football is growing rotten to the core. I actually struggle to watch games these days. Even the FA Cup is a shadow of what it used to be. I actually prefer watching darts and boxing to football these days.

Personally I would like to see him in a town shirt, send back MCGuiness and give Baggott a game. Why improve other teams youngsters? I haven't been over impressed with McGuiness at all.

And that money is laughable, so back off!

The FA need to do more to protect the young talent at clubs outside of the Premier. There's already a gulf on financial power between the levels, so the best we can do is bring good young footballers up through our own ranks - only for them to be poached time and time again!?

Welcome to capitalism, I guess.

Hate to see youngsters go, but who can blame them, they actually want to play football, good luck to him - he wins, ME gets money & the fans get stuck with the same dire team

Think this is just his agent trying to push for a better first pro deal from the club. Most of our young players will be having interest from premier league clubs its just how it is but they are just not publicised like Baggotts is being. I for one would be surprised if a premier league club is willing to take an unproven 18 year old. Totally hype from his agent!!

A Premiership side can afford to take a punt on a dozen players like this and if they only get one who comes through they are quids in. The FA won't do anything about it because their hands are tied. The Premier League effectively runs football in this country and what they want they get!

If your club is on the right side of this then you don't have a problem but where we are these days any Academy prospect who has something about him will be picked off by the big boys sooner rather than later.

Being biased, I for one thinks he should stay with us. Those transfer fees are laughable. Lads like him should show loyalty but that is not the name of the game these days but I am just a cynical old git!

Why go? He will just get swallowed up and never heard of again. Least here he may get a chance in the game.

As much as we all like home grown players, with the current academy rules our reliance on an academy at out level isn't viable. Our best prospects constantly either tempted away by a big club for peanuts or we have to risk spoiling them with inflated wages for a kid and treat them like they have already made it n give them all the power and take away lots of incentive to develop. Could be part of our problem.

It would at least be more palatable if he could be loaned back to us for 18 months.
