Town Sign Matheson on Loan From Wolves
Monday, 1st Feb 2021 19:12

Town have signed Luke Matheson on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Matheson joined Wolves from Rochdale in January 2020 for a fee of around £1 million having made a big impact as a youngster at Spotland after making his debut aged 15 years and 336 days.

He made national headlines when he netted the leveller for Dale in a 1-1 Caraboa Cup draw over 90 minutes with Manchester United at Old Trafford, taking the tie to penalties before his side were beaten.

Matheson, now 18, who is 5ft 6in tall, rejoined Dale on loan for the rest of the curtailes 2019/20 campaign following his switch. He has spent this season at Molineux but has featured only for their U23 side having suffered an ankle injury in pre-season.

The Blues have been short of a right-back with Kane Vincent-Young still to return from the achilles injury he suffered in pre-season, while Janoi Donacien has moved on loan to Fleetwood with manager Paul Lambert having rarely used the former Accrington man.

Skipper Luke Chambers has filled in in the role but with central defence the 35-year-old preferred position.

Matheson's addition may lead to worries that Vincent-Young's return may not be as close as had been hoped with the former Colchester man thought likely to play a game, either for the U23s or an in-house match, this week.

Fallowfield-born Matheson's move to the Blues may be seen as something of a surprise as he is a Norwich fan, his father hailing from Norfolk.

Matheson, who has won England caps at U17 and U18 levels, is the Blues’ sixth loanee with only five allowed in a matchday squad.

Good young player as is Parrott.

Anyone else think Lambert is not doing the signings, O'Neill maybe? Otherwise why not a single word from our beloved manager!!

So the real questions should be :

1) Just wtf IS wrong with KVY??
And
2) Why can't this Club get him rehabilitated ??

Wishingforarightback. So woolfenden messes up for the goal saturday, and you blame Chambers. Pathetic.

Looks a decent signing and will (hopefully) create more balance in the side. Allows Chambers to go back to CB which is also a good thing.

Would be surprised if he isn't straight in the first 11 on match day. Good that we have signed some players and shows some intent to move upwards in the table.

Welcome to these lads and hope they do well, but don't think the season can be turned round and promotion push to me seems unlikely ( hope i'm wrong ). In fact i find myself looking at the remaining fixtures and trying to see where we can get enough points to guarantee safety !! Funny spent the last few seasons doing the same in the championship.

matters not that he looks like Shirley Temple in that photo, but LUKE ! that IS worrying . Good luck to him , not going to get promoted this season but these additions may at least make for better watching. The fly in the ointment is Lambert unless he changes his failing methods and formations.

Timefliesbyintheblue, if you think Chambers is up to the standards required, I would imagine you may never have actually played football apart from at school. He has been abd us poor. He was out of position for the goal Saturday, he had drifted inside towards players that had defenders closer than him to them and left the left sided forward loads of space to score. Watch the footage, it doesn't lie.

So it'll be the 3 Lukes in defence.

Not sure even the Three Musketeers can save us now......

Blues1 I suggest you look at his position. If he was where he should have been as a right back he could have at least put him under pressure. Tike to take of the Chambers tinted glasses, fist pumps and shouting g at everyone doesnt make you a good captain or player. If you can give the ball away 41 times in a 90 minute match serious alarm bells should be ringing.

Luke Woolfenden, Luke Tomas, Luke Chambers, Luke Mathieson....
Should we resign Varney and Hyam?

Had a good second half against us at Spotland last year. Quality on the ball.
Hard to see him coming into the defence with the side already lacking height-unless as a wing back
3-5-2 ?
This is a crap league - is it too late?

He might be a good player but after all these years of going backwards under Evans we still don't even have the foundations of anything to build from. Pathetic, shameful.

Oh, and mow we'll have Chambo make holes in the middle of the defense instead of out wide, joys.

Loanees never work for Town and never will. Not sure why. Ironic after Taylor and Lambert saying we don't need to strengthen and have a great squad. It's all desperation and reminds me of BREXIT. If anything we will be more disjointed and lost than we were before! Look at our next 10 games it's playing top teams and no mugs.

I think this tells us that we won't be seeing KVY until the tail end of the season if at all.

He will probably ask if he can wear a mask on the pitch and someone else's shirt so he's not recognised by his fellow budgie fans!

I wonder when we will all be discussing relegation? 52 points required.

“You can't have a team of loan players ”- We have 6 now, maybe he wants to beat Jewell. You never create a team with loanees...we are sinking fast

happybeingblue added 20:16 - Feb 1
remember he scored at old trafford for rochdale last season could be the best of the loan signings energy from a pedestrian defence

Game of Loans Silly Season returns to Portman Road!
Hopefully he can bring something extra to us, however, even if we loaned in Messi we're still likely to be fairly stuffed with Lambert still in the building.
