Town Sign Matheson on Loan From Wolves
Monday, 1st Feb 2021 19:12

Town have signed Luke Matheson on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Matheson joined Wolves from Rochdale in January 2020 for a fee of around £1 million having made a big impact as a youngster at Spotland after making his debut aged 15 years and 336 days.

He made national headlines when he netted the leveller for Dale in a 1-1 Caraboa Cup draw over 90 minutes with Manchester United at Old Trafford, taking the tie to penalties before his side were beaten.

Matheson, now 18, who is 5ft 6in tall, rejoined Dale on loan for the rest of the curtailes 2019/20 campaign following his switch. He has spent this season at Molineux but has featured only for their U23 side having suffered an ankle injury in pre-season.

The Blues have been short of a right-back with Kane Vincent-Young still to return from the achilles injury he suffered in pre-season, while Janoi Donacien has moved on loan to Fleetwood with manager Paul Lambert having rarely used the former Accrington man.

Skipper Luke Chambers has filled in in the role but with central defence the 35-year-old preferred position.

Matheson's addition may lead to worries that Vincent-Young's return may not be as close as had been hoped with the former Colchester man thought likely to play a game, either for the U23s or an in-house match, this week.

Fallowfield-born Matheson's move to the Blues may be seen as something of a surprise as he is a Norwich fan, his father hailing from Norfolk.

Matheson, who has won England caps at U17 and U18 levels, is the Blues’ sixth loanee with only five allowed in a matchday squad.

Remember a couple of years ago when we were frantic to keep Dylan Crowe out of the clutches of Arsenal and others? Oh, well.

I remember him as a 9yr old playing for Rochdale at Old Trafford and a lot was made of him because he was in school the next day. We are currently a very lightweight outfit with no individual pace and very little movement in our play. His inclusion will do little to help.If we go with 3-5-2 then fine. If we stick with the horrible system that we usually adopt then set piece goals against us will be common place. Loanees or not, either way we are so ordinary that a promotion push is highly unlikely.

Hmm.....these signings do smack of desperation. Lambert has had 2+ seasons to craft his team and yet half way through this season he panics, off loads a couple of OUR players and brings in two 18 year old loanees who come with a lot of 'IFs'.

Nothing against the two new lads and hope they do well for us.....anyone who is an improvement on Chambers is welcome. I guess desperation does that to a manager. Just a shame he is too pig headed to realise its actually his tactical nous thats seriously lacking.

Good luck Luke

I'm struggling to get the 6th loan: McGuinness, Thomas, Harrop, Matheson, Parrot. Who else?

We might as well of signed John parrott for what good it will do...does shambert honestly think that signing two spotty 18 year old teenagers will save our season? What a joke you are shambert...this club is finished..rotten from top to bottom.

Stand out player when we played Rochdale last year ...two 18yr olds so they don't add to salary cap issues .
Don't quite get a forward that has scored no goals but it is youngsters hoping to make an impression so hopefully enthusiastic .
Welcome to the club.,..just stay clear of the toxicity that clearly is at our club

My memory must be playing tricks on me cos I could've sworn not that long ago I heard someone in charge say we were getting away from having loads of loanees 🤔......

Saw this guy playing for Rochdale v Town about a week after he had scored v Man Utd in the Carabao Cup. Small and puts himself about, he stood out. He'll be an asset. With Tractorboy 1985 on this kid.

PositivelyPortman.... this is a dishonest quote, not by Lambert but by you. This was in the context of no wage cap. For good or bad we need loans and young loans to bolster the squad. If you are going to slag PL off Male sure you are doing so from a rational point of view and avoid looking stupid.

So..... we're now bringing in a striker and right back on loan, who are younger than our own in a futile attempt to get promotion, which will never happen under this current management and owner. We are now sadly a mid-table 3rd tier club (lowest position in almost 70 years despite playing really, really well) and if we can't produce players to play at this lowly level, what hope for the future, because we're not spending on any good ones. A while back, Simpson was being talked up by Lambert as being a striker for the future (but now can't even score for the U23's) and Smith was also held in high regard as a right back, but again no appearances; what's gone wrong there? Poor Terry Butcher must be devastated to see this once great club resorting to bringing in other clubs academy players to go into our first team ahead of our own. Lambert, Evans & O'Neil out!!

"Kvy will not play again this season..... this club is f#cked from top to bottom...rotten absolutely rotten"

It wouldn't surprise me if ME had doubled KYV's wages to sit out the season so that Lambert could continually pick Chambers to fuk up our team. Look, even if Matheson was picked to play at right back Lambert would still find a place in the team for Chambers because he is the ONE who can not be dropped.

Good signing tbf. We needed a full-back and you won't get much better than him at this level. Shame he's a Norwich fan, although tbh no true Norwich fan would play for us and vice versa so he's probably only a NCFC fan in name only.

Well, I hope we play all of Parrot, Matheson, Thomas, and Harrop (when fit) in a last throw of the two-up-front dice.

I will always welcome new players to the club but I cannot understand why someone else's 18 year olds may be the answer and are they better than what we have already?
There seems to be a trend over the past few years where as soon as our youngsters play one or two games for the first team they are then put out on loan to clubs a lot lower down the football pyramid. One or two have benefitted from this but most seem to stutter along until we release them. Surely we need to persevere with them at our club rather than bring in other clubs youngsters?
You could not write what is happening now and talk about contradiction! Paul Lambert moaning that loan players are not the answer and now we have Six! We now have a bigger squad than before the transfer window started which is not what he wanted either.
I know I'm not alone here but this club as it stands is just about done for me. There will be no season ticket renewal whilst this current circus is running. Enough is enough!

Totally agree Cakeman. We seem to give our youngsters one or two games in a Mickey Mouse cup, or sit them on the bench, tell the world how great they are, give them a new contract, then do nothing with them. Keep an eye on young Baggott. He's currently the man of the moment, but for how long. I fear he'll fade into oblivion soon ....... just like our club.
