Taylor: Draw Would Have Been a Fair Result
Tuesday, 9th Feb 2021 21:58

Assistant manager Stuart Taylor felt a draw would have been a fairer result from the Blues' 2-1 defeat to Peterborough United at London Road.

Taylor, again standing in for manager Paul Lambert whose relationship with the local media has deteriorated over recent months, said the Blues looked to take the match to the home side.

“Obviously we’re disappointed we didn’t come away with the win that we were looking for,” he said. “The way we set out in the game was to go an be aggressive and be positive and go and attack them, not to come here and sit off against them and give them too much respect in terms of that.

“We know they’re one of the best attacking teams in the league, so it was important that we tried to flip it around the other way and try and attack them. We also knew it was going to be a second ball game, it was going to be back to front.

“Our start was what we were looking for, we went a goal ahead and everything was fine in that sense, but obviously late on in the first half, one cross too many went into the box and we didn’t deal with the cross that came in and we lost the goal. Really disappointed with that.

“Second goal, disappointed that we gave away a free-kick at the edge of the box, a fantastic finish and disappointed not to come out of anything from the game.”

Asked whether he felt Peterborough grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck by starting the second half very much on the front foot, Taylor said: “I think it’s just the way the game started in terms of they obviously had the kick-off, they’ve lumped it on top of us, so we’ve then got to go and win the ball back.

“They were in possession, hence the reason they went on the attack. So we’d just got to go and deal with that and try and defend it.”

Troy Parrott and Josh Harrop had shots stopped by Posh keeper Christy Pym in the penultimate minute and Taylor thought the draw a late goal would have brought would have been a fair result.

“I think so,” he reflected. “I don’t think there was much in the game at all. We had a good chance at the end, Troy Parrott, what an unbelievable save from the goalkeeper, just unfortunate it didn’t go in the back of the net for us, but I think a draw would have been a fair result.”

Town made four changes which Taylor says was due to the state of the London Road surface: “I think it was being sensible in terms of the type of pitch that it was.

“We knew it was going to come back to front and we knew it was going to be lumped right on top of us. We knew they weren’t going to try and play because of the conditions. We went for a big, tall and experienced back four.

“Also on top of that, young Luke [Matheson] hasn’t played too much, so to ask him to play Saturday-Tuesday would have been too much for him.

“We went for a big, experienced back four to go and deal with it, which they did do for he majority of the game.

“Bringing [James] Norwood in as well to go two up front to try and turn it around the other way, rather than come here as an away performance and sit off them, we tried to go after them.

“That worked, in the first couple of minutes we got our goal, we started the game well, they got back into the game as the first half ended but certainly we still had chances in the first half.

“Second half, after they scored, I thought we turned the game around again and we finished the game off strongly.”

Norwood was subbed at half-time having suffered a knock earlier in the half but Taylor says the striker’s withdrawal was precautionary as he continues to work his way back to full match fitness following his recent hamstring problems.

“He’s probably where he is at this moment in time is 45 minutes or 60 minutes in a game,” he said. “In those conditions, that comes down to 45.

“We didn’t want to take the chance. We’ve not taken a chance previously but he has broken down, so we’re in a situation where we really want to be careful and build him.

“We’ve got just under half a season left, so there are loads and loads of games left, we just really need to make sure that we keep him fit for the remainder of the games.”

Town once again fell short against one of the division’s top sides. Against the current top seven, the Blues have now lost all nine of their fixtures.

“Of course you need to win games, it doesn’t matter if it’s against the top of the league or the bottom of the league, you need to win games to finish in one of the top spots, no doubt about that,” Taylor said when asked about that record and the need for Town to start beating teams in the upper reaches of the division if they’re to be in the running for promotion.

“But they’re one of the best attacking line-ups and I thought for the majority of the game we did well against them, but obviously a ball in the box, it’s a good finish for the first goal and a good quality finish for the second goal.

“There are positives in the game, I’m disappointed we didn’t win the game, disappointed we didn’t get a draw out of the game, which would have been a fair enough result.

“But I thought Troy did fantastically again and he nearly got himself a goal at the end, if it hadn’t been for that great save.”

Posh boss Darren Ferguson felt his side thoroughly deserved their victory.

“We were very good tonight,” Ferguson told the Peterborough Telegraph. “I don’t think anyone from Ipswich would deny we deserved to win.

“We started slowly and conceded a sloppy goal and it took us 15 minutes to get going, but once we started getting the ball out wide we really dominated the game.

“We actually prepared for a different formation than the one they used, but they played a diamond and I know how to hurt that.

“We wanted to exploit them by switching the play and using width. We did it very well in the first half and eventually equalised from an excellent cross and a very good header back across the goalkeeper from Jonno [Jonson Clarke-Harris].

“We started the second half well even though they changed their shape. Joe [Ward] scored a brilliant goal and we had other chances to score. We should have had a penalty for a blatant handball, but we failed to kill them off which was disappointing.

“You’re never over-comfortable at 2-1 and Christy Pym has pulled out a big save to stop them equalising late on from the only chance I can remember them mustering.

“We should have won by more, but it’s a thoroughly deserved three points and full credit to the lads.”

Last night we played like a Conference side but without the organisation or physicality
So much 'wrongness' but in the last 15, when it was clear we had no idea how to score, why not bring on Drinan to try and cause some problems and make space for Parrot?
Did Sears even kick the ball?

The Town players did look truly gutted at the end of the game

If all the training and management are in agreement with what Taylor has said here as spokesman, then that is part of the reason we are in this position now. Delusional. Tonight was the time to stick with a winning team not going 'hmmm', 'lets get some of our pensioners back in as they may feel left out'! Chambers was left up field exposing the back where he should have been FOR THE SECOND GOAL. Marcus you have to make a decision to replace Lambert and his training team and bring somebody in before we are cemented into this league. IPSWICH TOWN USED TO BE THE PRIDE OF EAST ANGLIA BUT NOW WE ARE THE LAUGHING STOCK BECAUSE OUR WIN RATE UNDER PL IS SIMPLY SHOCKINGLY UNACCEPTABLE.
Having moved from Ipswich and living now in Norfolk has become embarrassing as a town supporter for sixty years. There is no hiding up here and Norwich supporters actually are patronizingly feeling sorry for me. WHY AREN'T YOU REPLACING PL WITH SOMEONE WHO HAS A SUCCESSFUL MANAGEMENT TRACK RECORD, BECAUSE PL HASN'T WHEN YOU LOOK CLOSELY!

Indeed waldenblue7

Ipswich council must be getting short of funds and own prime building land.

With 2372 fans attending next season the sensible move would be to ground share with Colchester United.

I was going to put a laughing face emoji but not sure if the above comment was tongue in cheek now I've thought about it!

The club is only heading one way!

Does he actually believe himself? Peterborough out-passed us all game. They battered us with the ball on the floor in spite of the conditions... aren't we supposed to be a passing team?

Absolutely dreadful second half performance. The scoreline flattered us massively, and this wally says a draw would have been fair! You're not fooling anyone, except Evans it seems.

So the PLank messes with the team selection yet again just to pee us off resulting in the usual defeat, then he can't face the press(that yellow streak is getting bigger)and sends assistant plank out spouting the same drivel you couldn't make it up, oh hang on though this is what we've faced since his arrival so you could make it up.

I now believe that PL has totally lost it. The team from Saturday simply had to play again but oh no PL changes it just because he can. I don't think he cares anymore as long as he gets his money. Fifty years ago we had a first team of 11 who played every game unless injured or suspended. We has just one substitute. Today with all the fitness staff and facilities we have players who need a rest after two games. Are they really that soft or has the world gone mad? Today's pitches are like carpets compared to the pitches of fifty years ago and tackles were so much harder back then too. Does the manger think his players are that soft that they can't cope? Why pay the wages of so many average players when we really don't need to? Just build a team and only use replacements when you have to.

Agreed Norfolkbluey... The micky taking and the banter has been replaced by sympathy! I have several colleagues who not only being Norwich supporters are football supporters and genuinely feel sorrow for us! There are some who think its great what Lambert has done here, but the vast Majority cant stand lambert, Lambert is now not welcome either side of the border. I want Norwich fans to start hating us again because we are better than then, i dont want a pathetic team and club they feel sorry for!

I came on the site this site in the hope of hearing he along with ST had been sacked, the disrepect those 2 show towards the fans with their assessment after each game is utterly insulting we are not idiots. I believe he is now doing this on purpose, last night was another example of lambert being the total opposite of when he came in and his subsequent thought processes, for example reconnecting the club with the fans, the play well and keep the shirt promise, football needs to be a game where you can come and forget about everyday things and get excited( words to that effect) about the entertainment! Well we cant come at the moment, but we still need to have that 90 mins where we can escape everyday lives, perhaps even more so!

Lambert just go! or Evans just sack him!

I was really looking forward to the Peterborough game after Saturday's improved performance, but after seeing the team selection i had the confidence knocked right out of me. Why return to players that have failed time after time. The likes of Matheson and Kenlock must feel rock bottom after Saturday's high. When are Bishop and Dozzell going to start delivering and living up to the hype. There's going to be a lot of comings and goings in the summer if we are going to get out of this league management included.

9 point gap to 5th now sotheres 7 clubs effectively fighting for 6th place and even if we manage to get it, to do anything in the play offs you have to beat 2 teams from the top 6 and we have a played 9 lost 9 record against them .......

A draw would not have been a fair result. Absolute garbage! We were woeful. What manager makes 4 changes to a winning team, especially Matheson and Kenlock, who were great going forwards? Such a depressing time to be a Town fan.

Th epenny has now dropped, the bull coming out of their mouths is because they want away from this club with the preferred location being Scotland. Lets face it, if they say it how it is, it reflects and highlights how bad they are, but by delivering these assessments, maybe they will pull the wool over the eyes of the top brass at Celtic and get the job and leave us!

So if it helps, Lambert and ST are really really really great!!!!!

Now get out!!!!!!!

This just proves Lambert has runout of excuses so he sends out Taylor to make pathetic dribble on how unlucky we were. The answer is “we were awful “in-fact clueless without much passion.Even when Norwood scored he looked glum. Please just go and take our useless leader with you.

If Lambert is too ill to do a press interview he is too ill to manage the team. He should be on furlough until he recovers.

Put Klug in charge until Lambert recovers his composure.

How does a side short of confidence and wins build a team spirit if the Tinkerman changes the team every game independent of player performances...
