Cotter Leaves Town
Monday, 22nd Mar 2021 17:59

Right-back Barry Cotter has left the club having been told he would not be offered a new contract at the end of the season.

The 22-year-old is one of 26 players whose terms are up in the summer. The Blues were understood to have an option to extend his deal for a further year but have told the former Irish U19 international that no new offer will be on the table and the two parties have agreed to part ways now.

“We have agreed for Barry to leave the club now and we wish him all the best for the future,” general manager of football operations Lee O’Neill told the club site.

Ennis-born Cotter joined the Blues from Limerick in January 2018 and made his debut in Mick McCarthy’s final game in charge, the 1-0 victory over Barnsley in April of the same year.

He came on as a late sub in the 4-0 win at Reading in the final away game of that season but didn’t feature at all during 2018/19.

Cotter, who had two spells on loan at Chelmsford while with the Blues, scored the winning penalty in the shoot-out in the Leasing.com Trophy tie at Peterborough on his 21st birthday in November 2019, with his final Town appearance later that month in the 2-1 home FA Cup defeat to Coventry.

Kiwiblue. We have had a lot of plyers who fit into the category of showed promise but never kicked on after being bigged up by some fans and all that has achieved is big heads and poor performances.

Think you will find he will return to Ireland to further his career, he's still a young man and has time on his side.

Tractorboybig, I think it needs more than pruning, put away the secatares and get out the chainsaw.

Bet he'll turn out to be a top player somewhere else. Good luck, Barry.

At least we seem to have parted on good terms.

Can,t believe any Manager really believes that Chambers at RB is a better option than Cotter, Matheson, Donacien or Emanuel. The latter 2 seemingly good enough for other teams in this league. Must be a clause in his contract that says he can,t be dropped! Please PC don,t give him a new contract, he was dire again on Saturday

This lad has more talent than many who have made the grade at Town. He's often the pick of the bunch in u23 football but for whatever reason he doesn't appear to have what's required to kick on towards the first team. Coaches will know the reason. Certainly a decent player in there somewhere. Good luck

I watched him play against Barnsley & you could see he was 100% Adrenalin for the 70 odd minutes he played. He just loved it & the crowd loved his enthusiasm & play making culminating in a salute when he left the field. I don't care what's gone on in the meantime, good or bad, just good luck to the lad & hope we see Barry Cotter in someone's line up.
Good luck lad.

Being realistic, if you can't hold down a place at Chelmsford City, then you've no chance of making a career as a full time pro.

I'm not sure what happened to him as he looked a v good player. His performance at Villa (when we won 1-0 was was amazing but somehow he's lost his way! Maybe he hasn't got it but hopefully he'll learn and find himself at new club.
