Edwards Linked With Sunderland and Preston
Wednesday, 7th Apr 2021 16:44

Blues winger Gwion Edwards is reportedly interesting Sunderland and Preston with his contract up in the summer.

According to Football Insider, the Black Cats and Lilywhites are both keen on the 28-year-old Welshman, who will be a free agent come the end of the campaign.

Town took the option of an additional year in Edwards’s contract last summer but there have been no talks about a new deal since then.

Speaking about the situation last week, he said: “While the fact that I’m going to be out of contract in three months might be at the back of my mind, it isn’t really something that I’m too worried about. My main concentration is on helping to push this team into the play-offs.

“Obviously, I’m curious about where I’m going to be next season, whether it’s here at Ipswich or elsewhere.

“It would be nice to know but, like I said, it’s not bothering me too much. I’m sure the club will sit down at the end of the season and talk to all the players who are going to be out of contract.”

Edwards is one of 26 players whose deals are up at the end of the season with a summer of great change anticipated even before confirmation of the takeover earlier today.

I don't think there'll be the mad exodus that everyone expects next season. Some of the present set of players will be kept on as squad players. It takes time to build a new team and i think the change will happen gradually rather than instantly. Also there's the question of what funds will be made available by the new owners.

Big need to slash the wage bill. The vast majority of those out of contract can go. Huge savings which will give Paul Cook quite a bit of room to get in who he knows will do the job that many currently here cannot!

Tractor kent, first thing Marcus did was sack Magilton by phone, I think you meant 12 million to Keane.

To be fair hes a decent player at this level when he's on form.

Not really sure on this one, on his day looked good - but those days have been few and far between, perhaps under Cook he could start to show form?

I'd kind of agree, jwshorts, but I think the key bit of your statement is "when he's on form."

See ya, the first of many I hope, to be honest, I wouldn't lose sleep if all of them left

An exciting player on his day but very inconsistent and you never really know which version is going to show up. I wouldn't be too upset if he leaves but if any manager could prise more consistency out of him he'd be worth having around, certainly at this level. That said, on balance it's not worth getting in a tug of war with a team like Sunderland though as I would rather the wages get freed up for Cook to look elsewhere. We need players that are going to influence games more regularly. We've had too many passengers at ITFC for too long. Edwards, while certainly able to excite on his day, unfortunately has too many prolonged periods where he seems to be a luxury passenger on the pitch.

A very good player on his day but over the last 3 seasons has needed to concentrate more on covering for the inept FBs the attacking the opposing FBs.
When he does attack he generally only has one play to cross to !!!.
IMO worth another year at least.
Not the real deadwood that this club needs to rid itself of !!!

Au contraire Benficaboy, it was indeed to Magilton that Evans entrusted his £12 million.

We need players who are going to perform consistently week in week out and although Gwion shows occasional signs of quality, it doesn't happen often enough so I'd let him go.

What's the relevance of Chambers and Skuse to a post about Edwards future ?
Any excuse to have a go at two of the most reliable and dependable players at the Club.
Typical of our kind of support.

Edwards arrived with a bang which soon became a pop. Flatters to deceive and is extremely lightweight. He started the season well but soon faded. Not good enough if we are looking to get promoted. I wish him well.

Very sporadic player - sometimes good pre-2020, last season awful and the beginning of this one proved me wrong and looked like one our best attacking outlets and then the injury around December and hasn't looked the same since.

Certainly hasn't reached his potential, but there's definitely a very decent player in there, and ability wise he's one of the more gifted in the squad. There are at least 15 I'd get rid of before him, in fact there are 25 who's departure wouldn't cause me a moments displeasure. If the rumour is true and our name is to become Wigmouth next season we can expect an influx of not particularly gifted players from Greater Manchester and Hampshire!
