Thomas: For My Mental and Physical Health I Needed Time Away From the Game
Thursday, 8th Apr 2021 19:58

Blues loanee Luke Thomas has explained the reasons behind his lack of involvement in recent weeks, saying he needed to take some time away from the game for the sake of his mental and physical health.

Thomas, who joined Town on loan from parent club Barnsley in January, hasn’t featured for the Blues since the 0-0 home draw with Northampton in February. In total, he has made four starts and one sub appearance for the Blues.

The 22-year-old winger issued a statement via his social media channels this evening outlining the reasons for his absence.

Asked about Thomas’s situation last week, manager Paul Cook said: “Luke’s had some personal issues that had to be dealt with away from football, so we certainly wish Luke well.”

Good on him for his honesty. Looked decent on the couple of appearances, better than Harrop

Good man Luke, takes a big guy to admit to troubles, glad you have been dealing, rather than ignoring them. Wishing you all the best for the future mate.

All the best Luke. You are also helping to chip away at some of the stigma still around us blokes talking about mental health, so good on you on that front.

I seem to recall he had a similar issue at Barnsley. Hopefully new signing philosophy moving forward

Uplifting to see so many caring and compassionate posts from ITFC fans here. Such positivity contrasts enormously to some of the unnecessary unpleasantness and negativity towards each other we too often see on these threads.

A lot of us fans can relate to loving football, but at the same time not enjoying it anymore. To be living that as your job must be quite stressful and upsetting, and he's a young guy living away from his support network of family and friends. There is a lot of optimism around the club with the new owners, but I still can't imagine really being happy to watch football again until all the nonsense is over and we are back in stadiums with no limitations.

@shaunmahony
So often we read fans commenting on players and telling them to suck it up because they are paid so much, but when someone directly says that they are having mental health problems, there is a lot more support.

Mental illness is a major problem for all and sundry. It is brave of Luke to come out and admit it which hopefully is the start of the road to recovery. More research needs to be done on this vile illness.

Poor mental health is generally unseen unlike poor physical health so full marks to Luke for sharing how he has been feeling. Get well soon.
