Cook Linked With Grigg Reunion
Friday, 9th Apr 2021 15:46

Town boss Paul Cook is reported to be keen on a reunion with his former Wigan striker Will Grigg, who is currently on loan from Sunderland with Saturday’s opponents the MK Dons.

According to Football Insider, Cook is a big fan of Grigg having managed the Northern Ireland international during his time as boss of the Latics.

Grigg, 29, netted 19 times in 43 games as Cook’s side carried off the League One title in 2017/18.

Solihull-born Grigg started his league career at Walsall having been with Birmingham City and Solihull Moors as a youngster before a spell with Stratford Town.

In 2013 he joined Brentford and spent two years with the Bees during which time he spent an earlier spell on loan with the Dons.

Grigg joined Wigan for a fee of £900,000 in the summer of 2015 - prior to Cook's stint as manager - and went on to net a total of 65 goals in 113 starts and 37 sub appearances before joining Sunderland for £4 million in January 2019.

The 5ft 11in tall striker’s time at Sunderland has proved less successful - eight goals in 37 starts and 24 sub appearances - and on deadline day at the end of the January transfer window he rejoined the Dons for whom he has scored three and picked up three assists in seven starts and six sub appearances.

Grigg has another year left on his Black Cats contract but it is anticipated that he will move on in the summer.

Even prior to this week’s takeover it was expected that there would be a significant turnover of players in the summer with Cook already understood to be keen on another of his former Wigan squad members, midfielder Lee Evans.

Kulturarv: We haven't got any overseas scouts. That position was ”rationalised” away a long time ago if I'm not mistaken. Granted we may have a few ”connections” but no dedicated network. My first appointment would be the new position of ITFC European scout to head a Europe-wide search for players from the lower (not too low) leagues.

Steve ITFC Sweden: You are probably absolutely correct about the international scouts being rationalised away. But I while ago I saw a guy on LinkedIn, Neill Hornby, with the title "Head Regional Scout - Sweden & France at Ipswich Town FC". So I thought that there might still be some kind of international scouting system around even if it was, obviously, not a success.
But perhaps it is not an "official" thing? People can give themselves the titles they like (PL is for example still ITFC-manager on LinkedIn).

Nevertheless. Didn't you live around Malmoe? Couldn't you start some scouting activities around Skåne? Maybe our new connections to Helsingør could be of use? Not joking.

Hopefully the take over and the ambitions of the new owners should attract a far better standard of player to our club.We can only hope.

Kulturarv: You might be right. I don't have any inside knowledge. I do remember that many moons ago I tipped off the club about a young goalkeeper at Trelleborg (S. Sweden), Andreas Isaakson, who later went on to play at Juventus and Man City, among others. And I seem to remember that at that time the reply I got was that we did have a European scout who was already aware of him. Then a few years later, I also seem to remember reading or hearing that this post didn't exist any longer.
Getting over to Helsingør at the moment is a bit difficult because of travel restrictions, but I'll keep my eyes open! -:) COYB!

Agree with KernewekBlue re scouting. Just wondering if rules on foreign players prevent this, number of international appearances etc? That said we have young “foreign” players in our academy. Confused. The dearth of overseas players coming to ITFC in recent years is dramatic.

not the sort of player i would be hoping to see, this is now our big chance to get somewhere, we want to see the club reserected not the careers of fading players that have past connections with manager. We need to set the bar high ,not jog along playing catch up next season ,and then end up hoping to make the play offs with a few games to go.We need to make a statement of intent, throw down the gauntlet , and fight.
