Lambert: I Left the Club in a More Than Decent Place
Sunday, 18th Apr 2021 15:44

Former Town boss Paul Lambert says he left the Blues “in a more than decent place” and is now looking to the “next challenge” and doesn't rule out a move abroad.

Lambert departed Portman Road at the end of February with a late run having seen the Blues to eighth, two points off the play-offs, putting a gloss on what overall had been under par campaign.

“Being out of the game gives you time to think and reflect,” Lambert told the Sunday Herald. “It also gives you time to assess where you’re at, and to be ready for the next challenge.

“I’ve only been out of football for six or seven weeks, and I’m feeling good. I’m positive about the future.

“When I left Ipswich Town, we were just one point off the play-off places [sic]. We had just had good wins against Hull City, Blackpool and Doncaster Rovers. So I left the club in a more than decent place.

“But now I need to wait for an opening to get back in. I love the pressure of management. I love the ups and downs. I like the way management always has you working on the edge.

“It’s much better to have highs, but you need to be able to deal with the lows, and learn from them. The lows definitely make you stronger.”

He added: “But now it’s about what comes next. I have confidence in myself, and believe I’ll be ready for the next challenge.

Lambert says that challenge might be a job abroad, following in the footsteps of another former Celtic man, David Moyes: “He took the decision to work in Spain after his time at Old Trafford, and you have to admire him for that.

“I was in Germany as a player, and really enjoyed my time there. As I’ve said many times, it was an incredible experience.

“I’ve yet to venture abroad as a manager, but it’s something I wouldn’t rule out. For example, I know the top three leagues in Germany are brilliant.

“The quality of player is very high, and the crowds are amazing. It definitely has an appeal to work over there at some kind of level.”

Sorry Paul, but I totally disagree. Maybe we have got worse since Paul Cook joined, but that is down to the mentality of the players, and as Lambert was in charge for two years, I think that is down to him. He hasn't left us in a much worse place than when he joined (and for that reason he is far better than Paul Hurst), but he still didn't really leave Ipswich in a decent place.

He must have been sleep walking through his time here having left a group of unfit, inept players, 20 of whom had contracts expiring. Total mismanagement. And he is now believing his own PR. You need more than 'a little bit of help', which is what you said would save us, to get another job.

Completely delusional! This is a man who used to say he “ couldn't ask more of the players” and “outstanding performance” when every one else a witnessed another rubbish performance. Compared to Cooks view this is a group of under achievers, unfit and uncommitted. Doubt he will get another job in professional football ever again. Serial failure who had one lucky break full stop

He's a Fraud, should never be allowed to manage again.
Lambert gave me my 2 worst Portman Rd experiences- Norwich 1-5 and Northampton 0-0

Frankly, he's not far wrong.

The squad he had was rubbish, and always was. People see that now, many couldn't for a long time and for some reason felt we had the right to win the league at a canter. Blinded by their dislike of the manager a lot of them.

He really is deluded. His legacy 3 seasons of failure and a massive squad of mediocre and unfit players! We did win his last 3 games but that was the players belatedly trying to save his job because they knew that life would be much tougher under the next manager.

More than decent place compared to what? A lone England fan in the centre of glasgow at 10pm after the 3 lions have won at Hampden?

He did Better than Paul cook is with the same squad. Iv allways said our squad is ridiculously over rated by fans & Media with blue tinted acadamy Glasses myself inc. When we first came down.
The reallity being that not only is the quallity of player not good enough but they have no fight to improve and care nothing for the fans because we dared to ask for better when Mcarthy told us to F off.
They all play selfishly as individuals
Some think they are too good for us and waiting for a transfer out or contract to end.
Some are allways injured probably from moonlighting in bars and restaurents too much or travelling the country out of "Boring suffolk" The rest just have no hope of being good enough wether they have been good servants or not.
We Dont need good servants we need great footballers.
I genuinley hope we go all the way to the top and those players get stuck with A bolton who then go bust.
There are only 8 1st team players id keep for my squad and only 1 starts.
They probably all go once we start challenging for promotion to the prem. Apart from the starter who probably moves to the bench.

You definitely did not leave the club in good shape but you cannot be held entirely responsible. Paul Cook has had no more success, arguably less with the same group of players. The problem is Marcus Evans lack of investment in players and Paul Hurst bringing in League one and two level players.
Paul Cook is in the fortunate position that he will likely have money to invest in rebuilding a new team something we have not had since Roy Keane tried and failed.

Paul Lambert did stir up the proverbial Hornet's nest when he mentioned the Club's structure was wrong. His strong comments may just have done us a favour as we are now in a wind of complete change.
I did think he tried very hard and it was a shame it didn't work out.
As for leaving the club in a better place than when he arrived? I'm not sure about that and the turnstiles never had a fresh lick of paint whilst he was with us!

I blame Paul Hurst for the shambles of the club

Hurst actually recognised the very problems Lambert and now Cook have seen. Hurst tried to change things but had no experience of Championship level football or players snd certainly didn't have Evans backing to restructure- nor would Cook have had btw . I think we can actually “ thank” the effects of the pandemic on the Evans corporation globally which has forced Evans to consider selling up .
