Bakay: European Super League Driven By Greed
Monday, 19th Apr 2021 18:32

New Blues co-owner Berke Bakay has hit out at the planned European Super League, which he says is driven by greed.

Istanbul-born Bakay, 42, is one of the Three Lions, along with Brett Johnson and Mark Detmer, who own five per cent of Gamechanger 20, the Blues’ new ownership, and who are also co-chairmen of USL side Phoenix Rising.

“I am being asked a lot about my thoughts on the creation of the Super League,” he wrote on Twitter. “This is a massive disservice to global fans of football and it is driven by greed.

“If it goes through as planned (which I do not believe it will) it will cause significant damage to the beautiful game.

“I think the founding members are underestimating the power of their own fan base of football and the power of UEFA and FIFA.

“Competition integrity is the cornerstone of football and eliminating consequences of relegation and promotion will be one of the worst outcomes for the fans and for football itself.

“Plus, who wants to see the same teams playing over and over again? Total nonsense! Football clubs belong to the fans and I am hopeful that the global fanbase will hold these clubs accountable!”

At least their business interests align with our interests, for now

The whole thing is dependent on tv revenue, surely even new age soccer consumer will get fed up with just watching the same clubs play each other

after saying that seeing the big 5 and spurs sod of has it's appeal

Totally agree with everything Berke says, perfectly summed up.
It's all about money and greed with the so called big 6, they couldn't care iess about the fans.

Doing whatever they can to make big money with no interest in the club and fanbase whatsoever..........who on earth would try and make money out of a football club??!!🤣🤣🤣

It's good to hear one of our new owners coming out to condemn this proposed new European "closed-shop" Superleague.

The pure greed of a very few individuals cannot EVER be allowed to win, to change the whole face and the future of the game we love.

As football fans, it is paramount that we stand up to be counted and give these pernicious few a clear message that this proposal cannot and will not ever be tolerated.

UEFA and FIFA need to retake control of this situation NOW and the Premier League needs to ban these English clubs from taking any further part in this season's competitions, including the impending Cup Finals.

Apparently, "Florentino Perez, the president of Real Madrid, will be the chairman of the Super League. Joel Glazer, co-chairman of Manchester United, will be its vice-chairman along with Juve supremo Andrea Agnelli. Both United and Liverpool are believed to be banking £310m up front." "American investment bank JP Morgan has announced it will be financing the competition."

This is not a planned move to enhance the game and make it more accessible for the fanbase of these clubs, it is a blatant act of terrorism against our national game, perpetrated by a few insidious people with no regard for history or culture, backed by an American bank that can only see what it would mean in terms of potential, additional profit.

This is greed-driven capitalism at its very worst!

I'm just waiting to hear of ITFC's invitation to join the ESL. After all, we've been champions of England more recently than Spurs.

Kernewekblue, sadly greed is, and has been present in the game for a very long time. Players follow the paycheck, no longer their childhood dreams, eagerly encouraged by their parasitic agents. The dugout is no longer a manager, a bloke with a bucket and sponge and a couple of rarely used subs. So many hangers on in football these days all taking a healthy wage from their already cash strapped employers. Football died as a game many years ago and has morphed into big money business. Take our club as a prime example, until recently £100m in debt yet with a squad of over 50? No other business would ever survive in the manner that football does. So many clubs with a rich history teetering on the edge of financial ruin, some having already been consigned to the history books. Had ME chosen to our club could have so easily gone that way.

If this goes ahead the 6 English teams should be kicked out of the Premier League and banned for 50 years. If they want to re-join after 50 years (because their Super League has gone down like a lead balloon with fans and they are not getting the TV viewers they thought they would to justify their GREED) they should start of again at the bottom of the football pyramid like Wimbledon did again.

We could also invite Rangers and Celtic to join the English league like the Welsh clubs have. We could then have a British Premiership. Rangers and Celtic are massive clubs and there would be so much excitement with them in the league rather than these other so called "top 6 clubs" owned by money grabbing foreign owners!

Let's hope this is the beginning of the end for post-modern football. Sky is reaping what it sows, and anyone paying into Amazon, Sky or BT for football is supplying the cash for this, indirectly. Time to get back to the good times of the 70s and 80s, especially for our great club!

Once you sell off the clubs to the Americans/Russians and the middle eastern money men you have no control on the game.

They can do what they like to make money.

Robsonwark, with all due respects Celtic and Rangers are at the very most only average Champioship sides. The rest of Scottish football is hardly worth bothering with .

As my mate, a Leeds fan, said, 40 years ago we'd have been invited to this.

RobsonWark - you criticize the 'big 6' for their actions and in the breathe suggest that Celtic and Rangers do the same thing, jettison their own leagues to make ours more exciting (a debate in itself)? Odd suggestion.

At the risk of diverting this thread, I'll endorse Marinermagic's view of Celtic & Rangers.

If they were invited to play in England, which competition do they join, the Premiership, or the Football League? In both cases, they would do so at the expense of two English clubs. I think it is unlikely that they would accept anything less than the Premiership. They would not be guaranteed places in European club competitions (if such opportunities continue, so would not be able to recruit top players, then (as happens to almost all), they finish in the relegation places, where do they go? Down to the Championship, or back to Scotland, where they would have to start at the bottom. It simply doesn't stack up, unless both national associations were to merge across all divisions. Away days in Arbroath, anyone?

As far as the proposed Super League is concerned, I'm dead against it. It comes as no surprise, however, that the Americans who own Liverpool and Manure are involved. I hope fervently, though, that our new American owners are not so steeped in the non-competitive world of artificial American sport.

Anyone spotted these 'Big' Clubs no longer have academies.....where will they get their players from ?!

Good to see Man City in there with their European history not matching our own !

Sad day for football that something some contrary to the very ethos of the Sport is allowed to even be proposed in such a way. Can only hope that it fails spectacularly and those responsible are kept away from future decision making.

Medway Tractor - Rangers & Celtic would start in the Championship. Why do you say at the expense of two English clubs? We will be losing 6 anyway! We have Welsh teams in the English leagues and there is still a Cymru Premier League. The Welsh clubs don't go back to that when they get relegated from the EFL.

Ban the so called "Top 6" from the Premier League and ALL club competitions and let them get on and do what they like.

It's just a good job FIFA aren't greedy. I'm glad they are so principled and don't reward bribery or corruption. Yes, the 70s was a much better time to be a football fan as long as you were male and white. And managed to avoid the Chelsea Smiles.
PS I'm against ESL, just making a point.

It's not as if i give a toss about any club other than Town but there are some clubs I rate higher than others. In fact, there is a complicated hierarchy of all clubs in my brain with Town at the top, AFC Wimbledon in second, a bunch of clubs I feel a bit of solidarity with below that, just under them are the main bulk of teams, and then there's MKDons and Norwich. As far as I can see, I've just added another 6 teams to the MKDons/Norwich group.

Foreign teams don't get a rating, that would be like asking who my favourite racing snail is, I don't care!
