Player of the Year Voting Open
Player of the Year Voting Open
Friday, 30th Apr 2021 10:24

Voting for this season’s Player of the Year has opened with the Supporters Club admitting that they held lengthy discussions before deciding to stage the award after such a disappointing and disrupted campaign.

They explained why on their website: “After prolonged debate we have decided to hold our annual Player of the Year poll. Some may ask why.

“We have held a Player of the Year poll every year since the 1972/73 season whether they have been good or bad, barring last year which we cancelled as the season did not finish due to Covid.

“This season, although the team’s performances have not been great, our supporters have been able to watch all games — home and away - if they wished via iFollow.

“This season will finish not with the outcome we all would have wished for or wanted, but we have decided to proceed with a vote.”

You can select your Player of the Year on their website here with voting ending on Tuesday and a presentation subsequently made to the winner.

Skipper Luke Chambers won the award when it was last held in the 2019/20 season.

I have had a look at the man of the match awards for each match. There was a clear winner with 5 awards and that was Holy. Then came 4 others each with 4 awards: Bishop, Nsiala, Wilson and Cornell.

If my maths are right (and that is a big if) if you take awards per match player, Wilson comes out best.

I vote for the grounds man. He has gone up and down the pitch on his lawnmower quicker than the ball has ever gone from penalty box to penalty box.

If this was for the most improved player or the one with most heart and commitment it should be Toto. If the annual award ceremony takes place, which it probably won't, the players left at the club could all fit into my shed.

It's a bit like asking, do you prefer a kick in the balls or a spike up the arse.

There always has to be a player of the year. Even if it was a disappointing season, there was still a player slightly less bad than the others.
I will wait until the season ends before voting, but I think it has to be Luke Chambers or Toto Nsiala, with James Wilson in third.

There`s a steward in the Sir Bobby stand. The brother of a mate knows his neighbour. His neighbour has a window cleaner called Basil. Well Basil reckons that the steward known as Capercailie Burred works for the council in the Sensible Decisions and Finance Department. So my choice is.....um err...

Difficult isn't it, would have to be a defender really. I'm not in the camp of those that deride Toto at every opportunity, he certainly gives it his all when he's out there but I can't vote for someone that gives away so many penalties. If he can learn when to lunge and when to leave he might get it next year but I always fear the worst when he's dealing with a forward in the box.

This is kinda like that time when everyone bought Rage Against the Machine so the latest X-Factor/Simon Cowell puppet didn't get the Xmas No1.

Maybe it should be shortened to player of the 1st month - seems to be the only time we get any effort out of this excuse for footballers.
