Former Winger Brogan Dies
Tuesday, 4th May 2021 13:07

Former Town winger Frank Brogan, a member of the side which won the Second Division in 1967/68, has died aged 78.

Brogan joined the Blues from his hometown club Celtic in June 1964 and he went on to make 220 starts and three sub appearances, scoring 69 times, including three hat-tricks, before departing for Halifax in October 1971, having previously spent a short spell on loan at Morton.

While at Portman Road, the pacy Brogan was a regular penalty taker and he was the top scorer in the league for Bill McGarry’s side with 17 league goals, one more than Ray Crawford, as they carried off the Second Division championship in 1967/68.

During his spell with Celtic, where his younger brother Jim was a player for 12 years, Brogan scored the club’s 5,000th goal in the Scottish League.

After his retirement Brogan, coached at Blantyre Celtic and ran a number of pubs as well as a taxi firm in Falkirk where he was living when he died.

Was a very good penalty taker - along with a certain Mr Wark the best we ever had.

Was in the team for my first ever match at PR in 65/66. Scored a lot of goals for a winger and far from all from the spot. Happy memories. RIP.

The type of player that we so sadly miss currently.
He was a very powerful, hard and yet highly skilled player too.
RIP Frank.

Yes Frank was a world class penalty taker and you never knew what side he was going to put it and always low in the corner.

One of my favourite all time players, can still remember some of his goals. He was part of a very good Town side with Broadfoot on the right wing, the best two wingers in the league in one side.
RIP Frank and thank you for the happy memories.

The very first game I ever watched was Ipswich v Bristol City in 1967. Frank scored a hat-trick in our 5-0 win. Great memories, and a great player. RIP Frank.

One of my favourite players. Geoffrey Green of the Telegraph described him as "Like a mini-skirted ghost" on the left wing. Badly affected by a bad tackle by Gilzean of Spurs I seem to remember.

Another of our great old players bites the dust. Condolences to all his family. And another player who would walk into our current first team o one leg! A goal scoring winger has to be high on PCs wish list this summer.

In the team/squad when I first went to a Town match, albeit too young to remember much. Record speaks for itself - an Ipswich great!!!
