Former Winger Brogan Dies
Tuesday, 4th May 2021 13:07

Former Town winger Frank Brogan, a member of the side which won the Second Division in 1967/68, has died aged 78.

Brogan joined the Blues from his hometown club Celtic in June 1964 and he went on to make 220 starts and three sub appearances, scoring 69 times, including three hat-tricks, before departing for Halifax in October 1971, having previously spent a short spell on loan at Morton.

While at Portman Road, the pacy Brogan was a regular penalty taker and he was the top scorer in the league for Bill McGarry’s side with 17 league goals, one more than Ray Crawford, as they carried off the Second Division championship in 1967/68.

During his spell with Celtic, where his younger brother Jim was a player for 12 years, Brogan scored the club’s 5,000th goal in the Scottish League.

After his retirement Brogan, coached at Blantyre Celtic and ran a number of pubs as well as a taxi firm in Falkirk where he was living when he died.

I've many others, sad to see one of my boyhood heroes pass away. A really quick and tricky left winger, RIP Frank.

Bill McGarry said that when Brogan played well, Ipswich played well.

Yes 51blue your making all the memories come flooding back for me. Joe Broadfoot was one of the quickest players ive seen in professional football short and stocky with a tremendous shot, but he was very inconsistent brilliant one minute terrible the next. I can remember watching the players training on the practice pitch through a hole in the fence there was one player absolutely flying over these hurdles that was Joe. Frank was the best player of the two slim and elegant with a deceptive change of pace that would catch full backs out and he could go inside and out which was what made him such a good performer for the Town. RIP Joe and Frank.

Remember seeing Frank play many times, TWTD indeed. Hell of a scoring record for a winger over that amount of games. RIP Fank.

Linkboy13 - Joe Broadfoot is still with us (according to Wikipedia) - aged 81! Remember Frank well as a speedy and direct winger. Recall a goal he scored at the old Valley when we struggled to beat Charlton 1-0 in our Div 2 Championship winning season 67/68. Frank hit a speculative shot from outside the penalty area and it went straight through Charlton 'keeper Charlie Wright's legs to win us the game! RIP Frank.

Good player, great penalty taker. I remember him being chopped down in front of the West Stand (surprisingly) by Spurs Alan Gilzean and being carried off.

Vicious tackle by Gilzean. Horrible man. Today it would be an instant red card.

One of my first heroes when moving to Ipswich in 1968.

Alan Gilzean virtually finished his career with an appalling tackle at the North Stand End.

God Bless you Frank and sincere condolences to your family and friends.

The best right-footed left winger we've ever had! I remember Alan Gilzean of Spurs pulling and tugging his shirt so many times, that Frank took his shirt off and offered it to him...great memories of an entertainer! RIP Frank.

A true Town legend. I remember his hat-trick in a pre-season friendly against Arbroath. We were 0-3 down at half-time but won 4-3. August 1968.

As a youngster Frank Brogan was my favourite player. I clearly remember hitch hiking to Derby County with my friend the season after we gained promotion to the old 1st Division. I believe Derby won the league that season under Brian Clough. It was a midweek game under lights a full house standing with Derby fans banter a plenty. We started the game well and Frank cut in from the the left and smashed a shot from well outside the penalty area curling it in to the top corner of the net. 1 nil to the town. Silencing the Derby faithful Great goal from a wonderful player, Unfortunately we went on the lose the match 3-1.

Rest in peace Frank Thank you so much for the memorys.

IWBlue, I was at that game at Charlton. In Charlie Wright's defence, the ball landed on a patch of mud on the edge of the six yard box and shot along the ground through his legs! Brogan was a fantastic entertainer as well as a great goalscoring winger. We could certainly do with someone like him today.
