Waghorn Linked With Town Return
Wednesday, 5th May 2021 15:42

Former Blues striker Martyn Waghorn is reportedly a Town summer target with the 31-year-old’s Derby contract up at the end of the campaign.

Waghorn left Town for the Rams in the summer of 2018 for a fee of £5 million rising to £7.5 million, signing a three-year deal.

Football League World is reporting that Town are weighing up a summer return move for the former Sunderland and Leicester man.

Waghorn was hugely popular in his one season with the Blues, netting 16 goals in 39 starts and seven sub appearances, the Blues having signed for a bargain £200,000 from Rangers in August 2017.

Town boss Paul Cook is set to make wholesale changes to his squad in the summer and it seems likely that free agents currently with Championship clubs will come into his thoughts, although with his ability to recruit at that level hampered by League One’s SCMP Financial Fair Play rules.

The former England U21 international striker is likely to attract attention from plenty of clubs and may still be wanted at Pride Park with manager Wayne Rooney having said a decision on his future and that of other players will be made at the end of the season.

Waghorn will hope to prevent the 21st-placed Rams from joining the Blues in League One on Saturday when they host Sheffield Wednesday, who are 23rd, in their final game of the season.

The South Shields-born frontman has scored three times in 20 starts and 11 sub appearances for Derby during 2020/21.

We will know more by this time next week. The retained list will show where the recruitment will happen. My guess a goalkeeper, one central defender, a left back, three midfielder a pair of wingers and one or two strikers. Would not be surprised to see an old hand like Mark Noble recruited to be a vocal leader much like has has been at West Ham in the last few years. Difficult choices to be made but only in who comes in as those going out I would think is fairly straightforward. We need early recruitment when the choice is greater and those choices are available, not last minute panic buys. The last minute is when you might bring in a loan player who could be a premiership youngster whose club feel Ipswich would be a perfect fit for their up and coming talent. Let's hope in a months time we will have a squad that everyone will be bursting to see pull on the Blue and White of this great club.

I wouldn't support Waghorn being the #1 striker but I also think he's be a great addition as a backup/#2 striker. Although ideally we would have a younger striker on the rise in that role.

But we really do need to be patient. PC probably won't be able to craft a PERFECT squad in the first transfer window, but with time, I do believe he will.

Form has gone downhill the last season...would be a quick fix here for a season or so but should be good enough at this level, a bit of recent experience at a higher level probably isn't a bad thing and as others have said 31 years old isn't ancient.

good player when with us but imo jumped ship, [he was not alone] returning players rarely meet expectations so really dont think it would be a wise thing to bring him back now, Sad really i liked him when he was here.Dont think he should be resurecting past players careers.Sorry Waggy .

Yep! can see your logic @dirty...even a poorer Waggy would be better than the shower of shi*e we've had recently though.

Waghorn and a few knew the c*p we were heading in with useless appointment after MM. Hasn't done much at Derby, even so I reckon he's a very good forward player

Well we will need strong players in this league. Went to the Rotherham game last season most of their players bigger stronger they won and got promoted! Waghorn fits the bill get him back please.

Was good for us, rarely injured , proper tough guy ,and knew where the goal was.
If we had kept him and Bart and not Hurst , we could easily have stayed up !

Definitely not...backward step. If it is true we have money coming in then let's invest in younger more promising players. Waghorn couldn't wait to get away 3 years ago so let him stay there...

Suspect we will be linked with pretty much everyone with a pulse given we are looking to sign a number of players. I shall take notice only of what we are told by PC and The Board, when they are good and ready! Everything else is just worthless conjecture.

PS Let us not forget Messi is available too....

If we were linked with Harry Kane people on here would say it's a back ward step. Wake up were in league one stop dreaming we need to get out of this league first and then build from there. Even with the new owners we're not going to attract the top players. I dont think he will come to us anyway he will probably end up at another championship club in the Midlands to save him relocating. My prediction would be Birmingham even if they are relegated. Lionel Messi's available no he's too old.

Waghorn has not been scoring goals but Derby are in a terrible state. He would be a massive upgrade on Norwood as he has class and has played at a decent level. Fans have to wise up to the fact that Norwood will always be in and out with injuries. I'd take Waghorn if his wage demands were reasonable. I'm not a fan of recruiting ex players but he's certainly an upgrade short term.

This is interesting and in my view would be a step back to take several steps forward.

He was quick to leave when he became aware that he was not wanted.

Kingfisher----fantastic shout in Mark Noble----we taught him all he knows in his spell here!!

marinersnose, yes although i have doubts about players returning,i do agree he would be better than Norwood, whom i have no confidence in at all.

No Razor Noble would be another backward step. Tammy Abraham's not getting a regular game at Chelsea im sure he would luv to come here. We could do a swop deal with Andre Dozzell.

Heart says no, he left the club after one season. At 31 he can't be said to be a long term prospect.
Head says yes, Hurst made no effort to keep him, he needed to sell to get his own players in. We are a mid division 1 team without a fit and proven goal scorer. We are unlikely to attract too many championship level strikers given our recent form.
So on balance I say go for it if we can agree terms

Linkboy13 added 12:35 - May 6
Yes dubblue Hurst was right to sell him we've certainly moved on to greater things without him. Great manager was Hurst don't what he's doing now. Oh he's leading Grimsby to greater heights.

"we will need strong players in this league"

How about looking in a different bottom of the barrel for a change?

There are hundreds of teams in Europe to look at

have we looked at one in the last 10 years??

why has Ipswich so few non white players??
