Cook Set to Meet Players as Big Name Departures Expected
Monday, 10th May 2021 10:03

Manager Paul Cook will meet with the current Town players today to tell them whether they’re in his plans for the future.

Speaking on Friday, Cook wouldn’t be drawn into commenting on whether the players already had an idea of his thoughts.

He said everyone was hurting after what’s been a difficult season: “That will come to the table on Monday when we speak to all the players individually regarding what’s gone on, what’s going to go on with the future of the club. And the future of the club is the most important thing.

“For managers today, the results-driven business is there for everyone to see. We don’t last long anymore, we can talk as much as we want, we can do what we want.

“For players, being successful at clubs is absolutely huge. Players can be passing ships in the night now.

“We’ve got to put a squad together for next year and that will include some lads who are here and it will include some new arrivals.

“But certainly one the town and the supporters and the new ownership can be proud and happy with. But at the minute that’s probably a long way from where we are.”

Those most on tenterhooks going into their meetings will be those who are out of contract this summer* with the majority expected to depart.

Skipper Luke Chambers, 35, appeared to confirm that yesterday’s 396th appearance for the club was his last with a post on Instagram and fellow senior players Cole Skuse, also 35, and Freddie Sears, 31, are both also expected to move on.

The trio have all been linked with a move to Colchester United with their goalkeeper-coach Darren Smith, a former member of the Portman Road staff, among the scouts watching yesterday’s 3-1 home victory over Fleetwood.

Midfielder Emyr Huws hasn’t been involved at all since Cook took over and his departure is certain, while Town’s central defensive pairing from earlier in the season, Player of the Year James Wilson and Toto Nsiala, also look set to be among those to depart.

It would be a surprise if Janoi Donacien, who has spent the second half of the season on loan with yesterday’s opponents, were to be kept on, while striker Aaron Drinan would also appear certain to be on his way out of the club.

Town had offers for Kayden Jackson in January, most notably a late bid from Huddersfield, so the Blues could potentially activate the one-year option on the 27-year-old’s contract in order to secure a fee. Jackson appears a poor fit into Cook’s preferred 4-3-2-1 system and seems unlikely to be in his plans going forward.

Teddy Bishop and Gwion Edwards have played regularly for Cook with the former appearing among the more likely out-of-contract players to be kept on.

Tristan Nydam could also be offered the chance to stay having impressed Cook after recovering from his lengthy spell out injured, while Liam Gibbs, as previously reported, has been offered a new deal with his current terms up in the summer and including no option for a further year.

Idris El Mizouni may not be offered the chance to stay as Cook’s plans for a reduced squad could see youngsters on the fringes depart. Ben Morris may find himself in a similar position after two injury-hit seasons.

Fellow youngsters Bailey Clements, who has been in impressive form for the U23s since returning from his loan spell at Dagenham & Redbridge, Levi Andoh, Bert White and Tommy Hughes also have deals which are up, although with all their deals including a further year's option.

Senior members of the squad Alan Judge and Stephen Ward have already left along with several young players, including Barry Cotter and keepers Harry Wright and Adam Przybek.

A number of players who are currently in contract may also be told that they can find themselves new clubs today, while the loan spells of Mark McGuinness, Troy Parrott, Josh Harrop and Keanan Bennetts, who were all involved yesterday, and Luke Thomas and Luke Matheson, who have been back at their parent clubs, Barnsley and Wolves, for some weeks, are all at an end.

*Luke Chambers, Cole Skuse, Emyr Huws, Freddie Sears, Kayden Jackson, Teddy Bishop, Toto Nsiala, Janoi Donacien, James Wilson, Gwion Edwards, Aaron Drinan, Tristan Nydam, Ben Morris, Idris El Mizouni, Liam Gibbs, Bailey Clements, Levi Andoh, Bert White and Tommy Hughes.

Town have previously confirmed they have options to keep Skuse, Sears, Bishop, Nsiala, Donacien, Wilson, Nydam, Morris, El Mizouni, Clements, Andoh, White and Hughes.

if Bishop has to go because of fitness issues fair enough , but Norwood is also a fitness liability, he should also share the taxi .But i just feel Cook will keep Norwood, and regret it imo. This is a massive moment in the clubs history, no room for sentiment, we need to be ruthless on and off the pitch now . Big test of Cooks character over next week or two starting today.

Let's face it cook made it very clear players were given plenty of chance to prove to him they want to wear the shirt. If they don't get their contracts renew its their own fault.

Only time will tell , some comments on here are stupid , it's only a game after all , we will never ever get back to the premier league , u need big money to get back there. It is embarrassing when u see how well Norwich are doing , just need some good luck , and decent signings ,
Who knows .

I could comment on who i want to go , who i want to stay , but at the end of the day it is all down to the management to sort that out....There will be players kept who we thought would go & vice versa.....people will moan about that no doubt....Either way i for one will be looking forward to a new era for my club & supporting them from the Midlands as best i can...COYB...ITID....

No contradiction. Just don't expect to get promoted next season.

Let's clean the swamp.

I get rid of BettyBlue, Blue1, Dirtydingus, Bert, Cat, TimmyH and Jas0999 to start with.

There's plenty of happy clappers that could join them.

Europablue - as far as I am concerned not renewing your contract is equivalent to the sack - I know it's technical but I agree with everything else you say. Let's look forward to a new start.

Between two minds about Bishop simply because of questions over his tendency to pick up injuries. Agree Wilson should stay and possibly Nydam. After that not too bothered.
As regards the loanees the only one I would welcome back would be Parrot but I assume Spurs would prefer a championship side.

Key will be to get in quick and buy who we need early so the new team will have time to gel. With a lot of new players it could take time for them to get acquainted with each other and Cook's system.

Finally best of luck to those who are moving on, they have by and large being loyal servants to the club, some have been unlucky with injuries, some perhaps played in not the their best position.

Despite any rules the FA lay down about talking to players during the season, I would think that Paul Cook as already identified many of the players he wants and has made inroads into discussions with their agents. It's totally against the rules but lets not be naive in thinking it doesn't happen.

I'm not going to pretend I can see the future and tell you who will still be at PR at 5 o'clock, but I'm bothered by how many players are out of contract this summer. Players' contracts should be staggered, so that we're not put in this position. What if the shoe was on the other foot and we'd just been relegated to L2 or we didn't have fresh investment? We would probably want to keep some of those players, but would now have to offer them new contracts, after their agents had looked around for better offers.

This is just another indicator of the poor back-of-house management we've been subjected to for years now. I blame Evans for the amateurish manner in which the club has been run, and I hope our new owners put some proper systems in place to prevent something like this from happening again.

Norwoods an interesting one for me, agreed we need a 20 plus striker next season to be able to compete where we want to be but he's managed 10 from only 19 starts with lets face it, almost nil service / creativity. I know there's a massive question over his fitness but under the new regime I'd like to see what he can do with treatment and then a pre-season under his belt (plus he's still under contract!). Be good to see a quality striker in to give him competition for the starting shirt 'cos that isn't Jackson, Drinan or Hawkins (Grigg maybe?)

Betty Blue what an unpleasant person you must be. These guys have mostly got families. They are not pieces of meat to disposed of. I don't envy Paul Cook's Job this afternoon.

Bettyblue - when I see your name at the top of a post, I don't bother reading it and go on to the next post as I know it will be moaning negative claptrap which frankly I don't need.

El Mizouni and Lankester have done absolutely nothing to suggest they would be worth keeping. And with Cook bringing in at least 6 or 7 new players to strengthen the team they will be even further down the list. But then again every player has a fan no matter how good or bad they are strange things fans.

Brendenward35 - best post of the lot
GSH71 - rubbish, look at Brentford who are essentially a SELLING CLUB who like us took 3/4 goes in play offs before finally getting there will without a shadow of doubt do so themselves.
Play really attractive football without any superstars until they go there and it's coached into them, look at players they've sold last 4/5 years who have moved up to prem, there's a lot to learn from them me thinks. All about good management which is definitely what we been lacking last 5/6 years
