Departing Skipper Chambers Truly Humbled
Tuesday, 11th May 2021 12:17

Departing Town skipper Luke Chambers says he’s been “truly humbled” by the messages and phone calls he’s received since news of his Blues exit broke yesterday afternoon.

The 35-year-old is leaving Portman Road this summer after nine years, most of that period as captain.

Tributes to Chambers have flooded in on social media from fans and ex-players, while a thank-you thread has been posted on TWTD to Chambers, Cole Skuse and Freddie Sears, who are also moving on after long spells with the Blues.

“Well, what can I say,” he wrote on Instagram. “I have been truly humbled by the amount of messages and phone calls I’ve received over the last 24 hours. I see every single one and to say it’s been a little overwhelming would be an understatement.

“I hope I have done you all proud in the way I’ve tried to lead this great football club. It’s been the honour of my life. But, for now, the chapter has to close and a new one opens.

“To all my team-mates past and present, thanks for the memories and allowing me to be your captain.

“To the Blue Army, thank you for always sticking by me and the team. It’s a tough job these days with everything that surrounds football but I hope you always saw a team which never ever lacked in effort. Yes, at times we lacked quality, but you only ever see half the story.”

Very Best of luck Chambo - a real credit to the game - never say die attitude & a true leader. Also, the most candid & honest (no bull!) pro at the club - interviews which never hid from the truth at some difficult times & a skipper who helped so many of the youngsters - thanks you Luke - I hope this is the start of rich new pastures in the game for you…

Good luck chambo for the future , I will be sorry to see you go and thought you should of been one of a few to stay , and I personally think being played out of your natural position is why you are leaving

blues1 - with respect. I've supported Town since 76, I don't live in Suffolk, so a journey to PR takes time and effort. I'm a season card holder and I travel away at least twice a season.
I've been one of Chambers biggest critics on here for the last 4 years so if you think for 1 minute I'm going to come on here and blow some smoke up his arse now he's finally departing then you don't know me. If the ship goes down the Captain has to be accountable. I judge a player purely on what he does on the pitch, none of this behind the scene bollox which we don't witness.
Where's the great Captain been post match after a loss? who quick to blame others when another gaff occurs? who's pocket a small fortune out of us and offered very little football wise?
Club legend lol that's a fnk insult to the true greats who have played at the top level, delivered trophy's and success.
Maybe we should have a whip round for a Chambo statue and park him next to The Beats! Get where I'm coming from?

Thanks for the memories, especially that late, late goal at scum, should've been the winner.
Best of luck moving forward, you'll always be welcome back at PR. Always a Blue

A shame there are not many, many more in the game of football like Chambo. An honest, loyal, professional who always played in a sporting manner. Did you ever see him taking a dive? Feigning an injury? In the refs ear trying to get an opposition player sent off? Thanks for the service and the help and guidance offered to many of our younger players. Such a huge shame there couldn't have been a packed PR to give him the proper send off he deserved.

Cat you're spot on
I too have followed Town since the '70s and we remember albeit with blue tinted spectacles real legends when the term legend meant something different to now
Beatie Hunter Osman Butcher are legends
Even De Vos or Mowberry we better players
However Chambo has been our leader for 9 years of decline and for the younger generation he's their legend
Today I'd thank him for his efforts and leave it at that

While appointing a new captain is normally one of the changes made by an incoming manager Chambo had clearly reached the end of his on-field time for us. While considering him a decent cb earlier on, the move to rb saw him exposed on many occasions by quick wingers and forwards. That said, I have no doubt whatsoever that he always tried his best and the managers playing him at rb should shoulder some responsibility for the criticism that he often faced when being out-paced/out manuoevered by quick opponents.
In my opinion he deserves full credit for the way he conducted himself, both on and off the field, and for the effort that he put in with young players.
It will be interesting to see what his next step is and I wish him the very best of luck whatever he decides to do.

Sentiment sometimes gets in the way of the truth. Truth that can only be assessed with facts. So a ‘head heart' quandary.
First the ‘heart' He has dedicated the latter part of his career, with gusto, energy and passion. Giving lots to the cause and trying to be the best he could be. So you can't knock him for that.
Now the head; giving all you can during a game is a fundamental behaviour of all well paid professional footballers. What is true is that regrettably he has made a great career out of doing this. Which has overshadowed his lack of quality, lack of higher ability resulting in desperation and game changing gaffs. It is a sad state of the game that when a team is doing badly the manager is mainly blamed and inevitably is given the boot by all. But the captain (the players leader) remains. When you look at the clubs demise over the past 5 years managers have come and gone but there have been 2 constants. The owner and the captain. When you assess this fact and taking an objective view Chambo has had a part to play in the pitch failures. Nobody ever doubts his commitment but it's the application of this. Business is full of tryers, but tryers often fall short as they don't have all of the skills. Sadly Chambo appears to be one of these players. Everyone loves a tryer, but they don't deliver.

There are some miserable mealy mouthed people around arnt there.

Chambo you are a star and a legend, many times I have seen you put your body, and often head, on the line in the service of your team and your effort and committment can never be questioned.

Good luck in your next step and I for one would welcome you back, peerhaps in a coaching role at any time in the future.

Only saw probably half a dozen decent games from this fella when the rest of the team played well on the day. I lost count of the awful lost games and bore draws. Games that were seen home and away over many seasons which were basically a waste of a day. Mr Chambers had to create the image of "Captain Fantastic" to stretch out his 9 years at this club. It was 9 years employment because of a distant, anonymous, clueless Marcus Evans. The best thing to happen is hopefully new ownership and a refreshed squad.
