Town Interested in Oldham Striker McAleny
Tuesday, 11th May 2021 12:44

TWTD understands the Blues are showing interest in Oldham Athletic striker Conor McAleny, who netted 21 times in all competitions during 2020/21.

The 28-year-old, who is out of contract with the League Two Latics this summer, is believed to have caught the eye of a number of clubs from higher divisions with his form this season, fellow fourth-tier side Bradford having made overtures in January.

McAleny came through the ranks at Everton and spent time on loan in the Championship with Cardiff and Charlton, in League One with Wigan, prior to Paul Cook’s time there, Oxford, Fleetwood and Shrewsbury, as well as having a stint in the Scottish Premiership with Kilmarnock.

He joined Oldham having been released by Everton last summer having made two senior sub appearances for the Merseysiders, and was the joint-fifth top scorer in League Two in 2020/21 with 17.

Over his senior career, 5ft 10in tall McAleny has scored 50 times in 127 starts and 68 sub appearances.

Blues boss Cook will be looking to add goals to his Town side this season with James Norwood the only striker to have netted more than three during 2020/21, the 30-year-old having taken his total to 10 on the final day.

Think all these links are the agents getting an auction going, I'm pretty sure PC would keep his cards to his chest on possible targets

I know nothing about this lad so don't want to comment on his ability.

However I think Everton's youth policy is bemusing, they keep their youngsters until they are 26/27 years of age. That model surely can't work for them, I'm certain they would know much sooner if he was going to make it at PL level.

It'll be interesting to see if we're linked with Mullin from Cambridge. Given how many goals he's scored this year, the geographical location of his current club and the calibre of clubs said to be linked, I'd be surprised if he's not at least mentioned in the press. And we need goals dessssssperately...

I do hope this is just his agent hyping him. At his age, he's unlikely to able to make the step up a division or - hopefully - to.

Mullin is old I think and has been carefully managed through this in terms of time on the pitch.

@NicRams I think Everton just forget that they have certain players - Luke Garbutt being one!

21 goals in the league below and at 28 he's a good age. For a free transfer he ticks a lot of boxes even if he's just to use as a squad player.

Be a decent little signing that. Don't understand the constant negativity from some so called fans

The negativity @ naenormal may be that we were expecting to be linked with a higher quality player, now I'm not stupid and not expecting prem players, but at best championship players at worst GOOD league one players, not players from a lower division, we've all seen the results of Hirsts reign.
Let's just hope it's agent/paper talk and we do get some quality through the door for a change

It's also not necessarily negativity but perhaps over excitement with the figures (20m) being thrown around with what we have to spend next season and then seeing us linked with lower level players

The "constant negativity" is because we want to be building a team to get OUT of L1 at the TOP end. Surely we should be looking for better than the 5th highest scorer in the league below?

When we were in the Championship, we signed players who were in L1&2... and look how that ended up. We now have a L1/2 team

Jackson was a proven lower league goalscorer at Accrington but has struggled here. And whilst Norwood has proven he can find the net, he hasn't hit the heights of his Tranmere or Forest Green days.
I would rather see a proven goal scorer from the Championship who is out of contract & willing to drop down for the right wages or at least one from this league.
We missed out on Clarke Harris last summer and he could have made the difference this year as he has at Peterborough.
So I am not convinced this is a good fit for us.

Oh dear, hopefully not Hirst all over again 🙄

Following the combined logic of comments on various threads today, we should be signing a proven goalscorer at Championship level who is under 25, out of contract, never played for Norwich, and doesn't wear sketchers. Reality? Who needs it?

Dear me some of you seem to think 28 means he's going to be use a mobility scooter.

A lot of fans seemingly won't be happy unless we put in bids for Haaland and Mbappe. I see no problems with this really.

@WhoisJimmyJuan

Nail on the head! But you forgot to add they also need to be an up an coming hidden gem from the lower leagues and hungry for success, cheap or free and will die for the love of ITFC. Must not be a scouser either and can play any role on the field in any formation.

Conner Wickham Stevie D got to be the numpty remark of the week he's been injured for about three years i think we've learnt our lesson on that score.

He was on the sub bench back in March for the Man Utd game

Christ. There really is no pleasing some people. Who are people actually expecting us to sign? We have a manager with a proven record on promotions and he's getting slaughtered at every turn after two months in the job.

We are linked with a free transfer who has scored 20 goals last season and he's not good enough.

We're a mid table League One club whether you like it or not! It's going to take A LONG time to get back to anything like the glory days of yesteryear.

Give Cook and whatever new signings he makes a chance before we write everyone off.

I think a few on here need to look at the league we are in and also our final position in that league. A dose of reality required methinks.
