Town Confirm Craney Joining Staff as Coach
Friday, 14th May 2021 14:31

Town have confirmed Ian Craney’s appointment to manager Paul Cook’s backroom staff.

TWTD revealed on Wednesday that Craney had been at Playford Road along with new first-team coach Franny Jeffers.

Craney, 38, played alongside Cook at Accrington, where he was later managed by the Blues boss, and joins the club as a coach, having been the kitman under his management and up until recently at Wigan.

The former midfielder also played for Altrincham, Swansea, Huddersfield, Morecambe (loan), Fleetwood, Rochdale, Stockport, Telford, Stafford Rangers (loan) and Conwy Borough during his career having been a youth player at hometown club Everton.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity I have been given here,” Craney told the club site.

“I obviously know Paul and worked with him at Wigan and when he offered me the chance to come to a club the size of Ipswich, I couldn’t wait to get down here.

“It’s a big club with big ambitions and shouldn’t be in this league and I’m looking forward to being involved and trying to move the club on.”

With Jeffers, whose recruitment from Everton as first-team coach was confirmed earlier in the week, having effectively replaced Matt Gill, and with Gary Roberts also a first-team coach, Craney’s appointment makes it unlikely that U23s manager Kieron Dyer, who has been working with the first team since Cook took charge, will step up to be part of the senior staff for the season ahead.

We understand that the appointment of an assistant manager - if one is to be named - is not imminent.

The coaches would win in any 5 a side tournament given all our players are allegedly under notice of moving on. I want to be impressed but somehow this appointment seems a bit lightweight. I am a great believer in people learning the ropes but a coach is a coach. Luke Chambers would be better qualified. Still, early days so looking forward to hearing about players coming in to the club. They can't all go to Portugal or the Faroe Islands for their holidays !

Cook can't trust the players, so it's fair enough to have a back room group that he has faith in.

Just need an assistant manager now. Has the job been advertised in the LIverpool Echo? Only scousers need apply.

Anybody who listened to Dyer's recent post match interview will know he should be given a prominent role. I'm very disappointed if he doesn't get a role. You're talking about a player who has played under Robson and Burley. Needless to say he has a heck of a lot to offer to the club. Plus he loves this club dearly. It seemed an absolute no brainer to me.

I hope Dyer doesn't get pushed out , been impressed with him in interviews and he is a true blue .

Could he still be given the assistant manager job ?

@blues1

I read the full article perfectly well you moron. I said I'd be curious to see if Dyer was given the assistants role because the article states that it doesn't looks like he is going to be a part of the coaching set up in the first-team.

Imm glad to see that Craney has coaching qualifications under his belt but if he was a good coach at Wigan or enjoyed the role then why did he revert to being a kit man instead? It's an odd appointment whatever way you look at it in my opinion.

If he stands next to Cook it'll look like Right Said Fred!

I'm a little concerned that the whole club is going to lose the Ipswich identity and become fully scouse. I don't whether PC told all the players that they should look for other clubs or they should look for other clubs if they don't want to put in the effort to be part of his team.
Personally, I would tolerate worse results and performances if we at least retain a core of academy players. We absolutely have at least four or five players in the first team from the academy who are good enough for league one and could progress into our championship team if we are promoted.

A lot of money being invested in coaches, backroom staff, admin but talk around players appears to be out-of-contract freebies.I hope this doesn't end in tears but all a little puzzling so far.

Maybe Craney is a 'coach' on how the lads should wear their shirts? tucked in or out or maybe whether to use Persil or Daz after the game...also have to say is there a typo on the '3' of 38? of his age...he looks like his playing days had finished back in the 90's!

"Still need an Assistant Manager! Is there room on the bench? "

Not once Craney has sat on it

We wanted a clear out and that's exactly what we are getting. Surely it cannot get any worse than what we have witnessed over the last 4 seasons and that applies to on and off the pitch.
Hope Dyer and Butcher hang around the club, good for supporters morale and that positive vibe!

Finally big changes at the club, which are badly needed, and, surprise surprise, some still moan.

Yes skip can't believe it, seems some people aren't happy unless having a moan.

Skip & timkatieadamitfc - my concern is getting rid of qualified coaches and getting in Carney who hasn't finished his badges and prefers to be a kit man, and Gary Roberts still to start his badges. Even when they get the badges it going to take a while to learn the role hence why it worries me. We need to be up and running in August with a good team that is coached properly PC can't do everything needs these guys up to speed straightaway not messing around doing their badges and trying to learn the job. Experienced footballers looking for experienced coaches not kit man seeing if he can be a good coach.

Jesus Christ some people on here would find a negative in any story. Give it a rest. We all wanted change and we are getting it. There is going to be major changes because the club has been a shambles for too long. We have been massively under staffed for too long. No doubt we will sign some really good players this summer and people will still moan about something

"....and people will still moan about something "

Perhaps if people moaned' a bit more we would have been rid of Evans a long while back. Instead we were endlessly told that we should sit quiet and be eternally grateful for Evans saving the club.

However this is a forum and the idea is for folks to express their thoughts, and reply to others. Why not join in instead of whining from the sidelines ?

On the pitch we all demand that players are played in their correct positions and are demanding quality players.

Here we have a manager who is giving jobs to his mates willy nilly. It stinks of cronyism. None of them are qualified or suitable for the job.

Looks like a long hard season ahead. Again.
