Town Confirm Craney Joining Staff as Coach
Friday, 14th May 2021 14:31

Town have confirmed Ian Craney’s appointment to manager Paul Cook’s backroom staff.

TWTD revealed on Wednesday that Craney had been at Playford Road along with new first-team coach Franny Jeffers.

Craney, 38, played alongside Cook at Accrington, where he was later managed by the Blues boss, and joins the club as a coach, having been the kitman under his management and up until recently at Wigan.

The former midfielder also played for Altrincham, Swansea, Huddersfield, Morecambe (loan), Fleetwood, Rochdale, Stockport, Telford, Stafford Rangers (loan) and Conwy Borough during his career having been a youth player at hometown club Everton.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity I have been given here,” Craney told the club site.

“I obviously know Paul and worked with him at Wigan and when he offered me the chance to come to a club the size of Ipswich, I couldn’t wait to get down here.

“It’s a big club with big ambitions and shouldn’t be in this league and I’m looking forward to being involved and trying to move the club on.”

With Jeffers, whose recruitment from Everton as first-team coach was confirmed earlier in the week, having effectively replaced Matt Gill, and with Gary Roberts also a first-team coach, Craney’s appointment makes it unlikely that U23s manager Kieron Dyer, who has been working with the first team since Cook took charge, will step up to be part of the senior staff for the season ahead.

We understand that the appointment of an assistant manager - if one is to be named - is not imminent.

Dyer does not have any senior coaching experience. He should go to another club for at least 2 years to get this, ( he left this Club over a year ago to go just that , but did essentially nothing) only once he's got this experience can he realistically expect to return to this Club for a role with Cook.

This looks more and more like jobs for the boys. Everyone he's hired is a scouser and none have great or any track record in the roles he's hired them for. It's like we've gone back to the late 80's where managers just hired their mates. Cook has done nothing to impress me since his arrival in terms of performance, results and hiring.... his man management is absolutely shocking.

Craney, 38

Is that his age or his weight?

Talk about a lack of diversity? Is anyone scrutinising these appointments? Let's hope player recruitment is based on merit.

I would have liked to have seen at least one experienced first team coach on staff.

Spirit, Let's hope they are based on merit instead of boxticking and diversity eh. Which do you want?

Skip, would you prefer the input from a broad range of ideas and experiences or a narrow set of people with shared backgrounds?

Wigan Kit Man to a First Team Coach at Ipswich Town ??
Proof of the Pudding is always in the Eating - BUT it has to be said, there's a bit of head scratching happening ... !!!
Time will tell, as always.

The change of Ownership, etc; was asked for - you've well and truly got it wholesale !!

Not terribly balanced just yet, I must say !!
Which in itself will have people hesitant in making a decision on Season Ticket purchase, one would think ..... !!!

After all we are ITFC - so maybe some things never change after all .... !!!

.... I just hope we're not in the process of being ‘milked' again as a Club.
Who knows right now ?

How in the hell are players supposed to take anything Wigan's kitman says seriously about what to do on the football pitch? I'd have offered Chambers a player/1st team coach role as at least the players all respect him and we'd have got a dozen good performances when needed out of him. I'm dismayed at the fact all the coaches will be novices and unproven in their roles and the manager can't man manage to save his life. Does anyone have Leam Richardson's number? Or spend the money we have but can't spend on players... FFP you idiots and tempt Eddie Howe or someone who isn't a 1980's throwback to the club. Are the new owners ok with these hires? People who could easily be really bad at their jobs because their is no evidence they are good at them yet.

We won't be signing big names for big money or top rated players as FFP means we have a limited budget no matter how much money the nee owners have. This point is missed on so many on here. It's like reality doesn't mean anything to people these days. Also “it can't get any worse”.... are you kidding me? Their are lots of leagues below this one. Ask Grimsby, managed by the guy who came in and was welcomed by the idiots who drove Mick out because top half of the championship was rock bottom in their minds.

I agree things were rock bottom, but can we really expect a band of inexperienced ex players, unknowns, untried coaches to do any better, even PCs qualities are dubious to say the least, I'm hoping I'm wrong but not optomistic.

PaulBRoast how are things Rock bottom? There is a long way further we can fall.... we might even be mid table next season or fighting relegation or relegated. Then it's not like things can't get worse after that. How about mid table in league two, the investors bailing out and us back in administration? I'm not saying that's how it's going to go, but brushing off objectively risky or bad decisions saying it can't get any worse is about as irrational and far from objective reasoning as possible. Of course it could get worse
