St Johnstone Striker Aware of Interest
Sunday, 23rd May 2021 12:38

St Johnstone striker Guy Melamed, who has been linked with the Blues, Sunderland and Portsmouth, says he’s been made aware of interest in him by his agent.

The 28-year-old, who was on the bench for the Saints as they beat Hibernian 1-0 in yesterday's Scottish Cup final was mentioned in connection with the Blues, Black Cats and Pompey in March.

Asked after yesterday’s game whether he might sign a new deal with his current club, the out-of-contract frontman said: "Absolutely. It's an amazing place that has given me the opportunity to introduce myself in Europe and I hope we can bridge our gaps in negotiations and conditions.

“We have put together a legendary season, the best season in the history of the club and the club wants all the staff to continue. I strongly believe in the club

But he knows he has options elsewhere and will consider his future: “I heard from my agent. He told me there is interest. It's very flattering to me. I'll have to sit down with my agent and look at all the proposals.

“I will return home. I will be with my family, I will enjoy some of the time in the country because I have not been there for many months.

“I will examine the proposals and decide what is the best place for me. I do not rule out [Israel], but on the other hand my direction is to continue abroad.”

Born in Ra'anana, Israel, Melamed had played all his career in his home country prior to joining St Johnstone in October last year, featuring for Hapoel Kfar Saba, Maccabi Petah Tikva, Maccabi Herzliya and Hapoel Be'er Sheva - with whom the 5ft 8in tall striker won the Israeli Premier League in 2017/18 - prior to two years with Maccabi Netanya.

Melamed scored seven goals in 16 starts and seven sub appearances for St Johnstone during 2020/21.

Can't see this one happening, seems happy where he is if he can sort out new deal.

I think players currently playing in Scotland, Europe and the US are our best options as we will find it difficult to attract the right calibre of players from other English clubs.

Why don't we sign two Dutchmen ?

I’ve no idea who he is or if he’s any good but on the bench for st Johnstone is about league one level I guess. I can imagine the uproar if Lambert was targeting him though. Multiple comments about evans being tight or how low we’ve sunk.

Never going to happen sub for St Johnstone really

St Jontstone in Europe next year on the back of the cup wins?
If so I'd be shocked he would walk away.
That being said he'd get paid more here or at Sunderland...bloody Sunderland!

Sunderland and Sheff Weds will have far bigger wage budgets to play with than us next year unless we are using a lot of the youngsters as first team players. Cooks history is of bringing in late 20’s early 30’s journeymen….. but please correct me if you can list a load of youngsters he’s progressed. Might make me a little more positive about him. Nothing he’s done so far has impressed me and I was optimistic about his appointment. He’s wasted all that so far.

On the bench for St Johnstone? Move along, nothing to see here

He's winning more up there than he'd win with us, and arguably playing at a much higher level. I'm sure he'd snub us if given the choice.

Pretty easy to see what's going on here. The player is in contract negotiations, his agent has got him hyping up rumours. I'd be very surprised if a squad player from St. Johnstone was the quality of player we are looking at if we are letting our entire League 1 squad go.

I don’t want to pooh pooh some of these links nor do I want to incur the wrath of our Jocko cousins, but this Guy (no pun intended) is 5’8”. Is he to play the number 9 role or one of the 3?

There’s a 6ft 1” striker who was on loan from Hearts to Motherwell, name of Jordan Roberts, oops somebody just reminded me we have already tried him!!!!

My point is that outside of the big 2 old firm clubs the standard in Scotland is really poor, many players in the top two tiers there would even struggle in EFL 1 or 2

....and those who keep commenting on let’s sign a couple of Dutchmen, Brexit has put paid to that I am afraid, we have to be looking at International players to get work permits. Kevin Bru might still be available as a Mauritius international, but that’s where our international network if we have one has to be looking at promising. I guess this Guy may have played for Israel at some point!!!

He has options if there is interest and he is shortly out of contract but if he can get what he wants at his current club why would he leave a squad playing in Europe next season to come to any club in league1

Why talk about 2 dutchmen, who are they.get real stop thinking about past memories.we are a div 1 club and nothing more.until we prove otherwise nothing has changed but i really hope it does for all fans.

Can’t see this one happening. Is he good enough, when he can’t get a start for st. Johnston.

JewellintheTown added 09:42 - May 24
Would welcome him and give him a chance like all other new signings if it were true and trust Cooks judgement, however I cant seem to get excited about a player like this when we're prepared to let go players of similar quality.

I'd love this one to happen. I saw one of those video montages of his goals when we were first linked with him a few months ago and it went on for ages ...with him scoring goals. It's the first ever video preview of a player we've been interested in that looked good!

ThaiBlue - Before you launch into a half-witted attack, perhaps stop and think that it may have been a joke.

no signs of anything exciting yet re signings but its early days, When the transfer market opens hopefully we will do a better job than previous few seasons.Back room staff has been transformed , just hope it is hasnt all be based on that being the problem, we need better players.

Monkey_Blue - 'far bigger wage budgets' relating to Sunderland and Sheff Weds than us, well not really ALL clubs have to abide by the SCMP financial fair play rules and can only spend up to 60% of their turnover on wages (sponsorship/matchday income/TV revenue), okay Sunderland might get more through the gates but I should think it would not make that much of a difference and we don't know how much Mr Sheeran has sponsored us this upcoming season.

BlueSwede added 13:10 - May 24
Think we can forget about signing players from Europe. Because of Brexit, the door is shut for teams like us to sign players from outside the UK. Unless they allready have a valid work-permit

OliveR16 added 13:18 - May 24
While I understand that this general system of flaying about for any half-decent footballer who has had a good season is the summer normal, I had hoped that Cook might have had more of a definite plan. Like having two or three intentional strong signings and using the Football Manager stick-pin-in-players-beginning-with-a-letter-of-the-alphabet system to add a little depth rather than form a team.

We don't need him we've still got Super Oli Hawkins 😂😂
