Blues Linked With Sunderland Trio
Thursday, 27th May 2021 12:54

Town are reported to be showing interest in Sunderland trio Charlie Wyke, Max Power and young attacker Josh Hawkes.

According to the EADT, the Blues are keen on striker Wyke and midfielders Power and Hawkes as manager Paul Cook looks to make very significant changes to his squad this summer.

Wyke netted 31 times for the Black Cats last season and was League One’s second-top scorer having been linked with Town last summer.

The 28-year-old, who joined the Wearsiders from Bradford for £250,000 in the summer of 2018, is out of contract at the Stadium of Light but has been offered new terms.

Championship sides Nottingham Forest, Millwall, Cardiff City and former club Middlesbrough have all recently been linked, along with Celtic and CSKA Moscow.

Born in Middlesbrough, Wyke started his career with his hometown club during which time he had spells on loan at Kettering, Hartlepool and AFC Wimbledon before moving to Carlisle on a permanent basis and then the Bantams.

Power has been released by the Black Cats this summer having skippered them in 2020/21.

The 27-year-old previously played for Town boss Paul Cook at Wigan and was part of the Latics side which won the League One title in 2017/18.

Birkenhead-born Power came through the ranks at Tranmere before moving on to Wigan in 2015 and then Sunderland, initially on loan, three years later.

Hawkes, 22, started his career with Hartlepool and spent time on loan at Marske United and Dunston UTS while with Pools.

He joined Sunderland in 2020 on a two-year deal but has made only one senior appearance in the EFL Trophy.

An attacking player who can operate centrally or in wide areas, Hawkes netted 13 league goals in 19 starts for the Wearsiders’ U23s during 2020/21.

Given his lack of first-team chances, it’s understood the Stockton-on-Tees schemer would be interested in a move.

If I had to bet on us signing any of them it would be Power. He's not going to attract big championship clubs, he's a scouser and he's played for Cook. Will this excite me? Not really.

Anyone who has played for cook will be linked, it's that time of the year just Journo's building up the start of the window, but i would like to see Wyke in the building although with allegedly championship clubs looking we would not have a chance.

Not holding my breath on Wyke think we've got between fat and no chance.

No chance of getting Wyke after the season he's had unless we offer him ridiculous wages.

I'm not sure how the season ticket sales are going but who we sign will be geared to that. Clubs like Sunderland will have a good following 43000 seater stadium and do the match day experience far better than town. So competing against club like that on wages is going to be difficult. A lot of players moving on for free so be asking silly money for wages. We might be lucky get a real gem but that's going to take some doing in the current climate.

It is going to be an exciting time for us all. We will be linked with many and the right ones will arrive. Once the window opens a significant amount of buying and selling will commence.

I wonder who would provide the service for Wyke if we got him here? obvious that McGeady's quality has helped him this season...Power would be a no from me, don't know a lot about Hawkes.

@TractorRoyNo1 - don't forget how people on here like to complain. If we signed Messi it would be that he's beyond his best and too short.

Paper talk.

The thing that amuses me is that you can buy the best 11 players in the world but they may not function as a team!! I think Paul Cooks comment about promotion in 2 seasons is realistic, this whole process will take time, several windows and lots of upheaval. The important thig for me is that we should be holding on to our best players who have potential to get better and build a side around them to start with, a nucleus if you like!

To start the new season with 11 new players is very risky and in my opinion, for what it's worth, not necessary, I think there will be several familiar faces in the side come July and I'm not unhappy with that....... depending on who they are of course!!!

Exciting but also slightly scary times ahead.

I've watched the mackums a couple of times pre-lock down due to family connections. The player who impressed me most was Luke O'Nien. Midfielder/wing-back on either flank. The least impressive was Wlll Grigg. I think Grigg will be here but I hope not. Wyler would be brilliant but it won't happen.
