Town Closing in On Fleetwood Forward Burns
Thursday, 3rd Jun 2021 12:43

TWTD understands the Blues are closing in on the signing of Fleetwood forward Wes Burns.

Former Wales U21 international Burns, 26, started his career at Bristol City and will be well known to new Town CEO Mark Ashton.

We understand Town’s interest is at an advanced stage and the 26-year-old is almost certainly one of the players Ashton was referring to when he suggested a couple of signings could be completed in the next week.

If the deal goes through then Burns will be the first addition of Paul Cook's time as boss and since the change of ownership at Portman Road.

It may well be that right-back Janoi Donacien could be part of the deal having spent the second half of last season on loan at Highbury. Town recently took up a year's option on the former Accrington man's contract largely in order to secure either a fee or use him as a bargaining chip in swap deals.

While at Ashton Gate Burns spent time on loan at Forest Green Rovers, Oxford United, Cheltenham, Fleetwood and Aberdeen.

Having made six senior starts and 48 sub appearances for the Robins, the Cardiff-born right-sided attacker or right-back returned to Fleetwood on a permanent basis in January 2017.

Burns, who has made 134 starts and 42 sub appearances, scoring 23 times since joining the Cod Army on a permanent basis, is contracted to Fleetwood for another season after an option on his contract was recently triggered.

Last season Burns netted six times, including his side’s goal in their final-day 3-1 defeat to the Blues at Portman Road.

Interesting, but forget any notion of him being a right back, Edwards skinned him alive in the role in may before he switched forward at half time. If Donacien goes the other way, this is good business....

He's not a striker cjpase.

As for TractorRoy everything about that comment is moronic.

With those stats, he won't be brought in as a main striker, that's for sure.

He's a good age at 26, with his best years yet to come (hopefully). As one of the cogs in an attacking machine, to carry the ball forward and feed the striker(s), it would seem he fits the remit.

Things are going to get very interesting very quickly now!

Time to change the headline from 'Forward' to attacking right back !

Why can't some people read the article properly. He is not a striker but a versatile right back/wing back with a pretty good scoring record for an attacking player who is not an out and out striker. Really hope this signing is rubber stamped quickly. Keep an eye on how many more TractorRoy and Cornish blu comments are negative in regard to further signings

As others have said on here he is part of a large jig-saw puzzle, PC is no doubt putting together players he thinks will operate well as part of his new side, I trust his judgement at the level we are at, he knows the players and the lower leagues well. I would love to see one big name though maybe for just one last season, like Phoenix did with Drogba, surely we can tempt someone!! Exciting times ahead.

As usual people comment without reading the story. Hes a forward player, not a striker. So why the negative comments. But then, typical of a section of ipswich fans nowadays. Just have to be negative. TractorRoyNo1. Yes, 40 years ago we were the best in europe. We arent mow. Si get over it. The past is the past. And this is the kind of player we need to be signing to give us the chance to get out of this league.

wow ......I thought forums were for different opinions ....not to get slagged off if your opinion is different to others . Amazing how many brilliant football minds are on here , makes you wonder why we don't just take a poll from here and buy players based on that . 3 minutes of a YouTube clip is all you need apparently

cornishblu - it's pretty hilarious how you're judging people for watching an imaginary youtube clip but have based your opinion entirely on the word 'forward'

My knowledge is based off the 180 minutes he ran us ragged on the wings this season.

He seems to me to be a more than useful player, with plenty of pace and skill on the ball. If KVY could keep fit then a player like Burns ahead of him could make for a real threat on the right flank. Partnerships work. I still smile when I think of Taricco and Mason in the same team. Let's hope that this Burns story comes to fruition.

We'll ask him to wear a suit and then give him an office job. Either that or Morecambe will show some interest and he'll go there instead! A decent player with a nice turn of pace. He left McGuinness for dead for his goal, and if I recall, everybody said he was the best player on the field by far in the final game.

Good to see some action and I believe this would be a positive signing especially if Donacien goes the other way.

It would be interesting to know the state of play in regard to the young players whose contracts expire soon namely Hughes, Gibbs, Andoh, Clements and Morris. Things are remarkably quiet on this front are we to assume they are all gone too or is Cook simply not that interested in the under 23s despite the rhetoric to the contrary.

A good prospect to consider would be Alex Scott from Bristol City, he has been in the same year at school as our son in Guernsey and is one of the most outstanding talents to come out of the island since Matt Le Tissier at Southampton.

Trouble is we made every opposing player look good when they played us last season so it's hard to tell but he is the right age, can play in multiple positions and was their player of the season in 2019 so what's not to like.

Not a striker but the headline mentions hes a forward.....?
id want my forwards (who can also play right back) to have a better ratio than 1 goal every 7 games regardless of which league its in. is he better than what we've got...no idea but the stats supplied above dont seem that way. If fans are happy with these kinds of signings then thats up to them.

you say....
My "knowledge" is based off the 180 minutes he ran us ragged on the wings this season.

how many other fleetwood games did you watch?

Cornishblu - I expect your Leicester counterpart moaned like hell when they bought a striker, in his mid-20's, from Fleetwood.

Good player. Good age, as we look to build a team for next season and beyond.

Would be a good signing with his ability to play anywhere on the right with fitness doubts where our best right back is concerned lets get it over the line with more quality additions in the building before pre season training starts.

I know I'm going to be shot down but I've noticed a few posts saying 'great business' 'quality' etc. as if they've been following him rigorously!... are these the same posters that were congratulating every transfer move Hurst made back in 2018? You daren't be anything but positive in the summer (just feels like it's a reset like 2018 all over again).

and the links keep on coming to Bristol City and Wes Burns 16 goals isn't fantastic in 144 appearances for Fleetwood according to Wiki...

TimmyH added 17:52 - Jun 3
I should also say he is a right back so maybe that goal tally isn't bad and seems quite versatile...he'll need to be if coming here.

Could be a decent signing. I see the usual moaners out in force as always.

Not blown away with this to be honest. Time to get some young overseas players in.
