Blues Close in on Evans Signing
Friday, 4th Jun 2021 09:48

Wigan central midfielder Lee Evans, who TWTD revealed was a Blues target in April, is currently at the club and looks set to become Town's second signing of the summer today.

We understand Evans is at the club now to undergo a medical and complete the formalities on a free move with his Latics contract up this summer.

Evans, 26, was taken to the DW Stadium by Blues boss Paul Cook on loan from Wolves for the 2017/18 campaign in which the Latics carried off the League One title.

That led to a £750,000 move to Sheffield United, then in the Championship, but after a year with the Blades Evans returned to Wigan on another loan in the summer of 2018 before the switch was made permanent the following January.

Evans had been released by Bristol Rovers as a 15-year-old and joined hometown club Newport County where he broke into the first team when only two years older in 2012.

In January 2013, Wolves paid a reported £200,000 for his services and the four-times-capped Wales international went on to be a member of the side which won the League One title in 2013/14 season.

He featured in the Championship during the following campaign but spent 2015/16 back in League One with Bradford before returning to Wolves for the next season, prior to joining Wigan for his first loan spell.

Yesterday, the Blues made Fleetwood's Wes Burns the first signing of the Cook and Gamechanger eras. We understand that in addition to Coventry, the Blues fought off two other Championship clubs, Hull City and Millwall, to land the forward.

No complaints! Get it over the line, and give him a warm welcome!

Amazing how, following years of living in a dark place where the most modest of signings seemed well beyond us, a great shaft of light is beaming down. Agree that it's still very early days, but by heck everything seems a whole lot more positive looking forward. COYB!

Hmmm just wondering if he's a little injury prone...only played 9 times last season and not really a goal scorer, but again the connection again is there to either Cook or Bristol City.

Will this be two quality players brought in on a “free” then because they were at the end if their contracts ? Brilliant piece of work if so. Christ, can you imagine us getting anywhere near this scenario under Evans ??

Essentially we now:
Identify the player
Negotiate with their club
Negotiate with the player
Contract signed : deal done

No messing around for the whole transfer window , with protracted “ negotiations “, only to fail in securing the player. What a bloody joke we were under Evans . No recruitment strategy. No negotiation nounce, inability to secure players that other clubs want.

That's all done with now .

“Thank you” to The Three Lions ..... you're giving us our Club back 👍

Fantastic. He was the guy I said we would guarantee get. And I'm very pleased we did(/will).

Arnie m. Burns is not a free. We're paying a fee for him. And actually had we signed Lee Evans on a free under Marcus Evans, hed have got slagged off for signing yet another free transfer. Strange how fans attitude change like the weather. Is good, as u say, that we are now getting deals done more quickly tho.

at least we are getting things done early, normally we are kicking around the market as it shuts down looking at leftovers.

Blues1. I actually asked the question , did we get these players on a free. I didn't assume we had, but if we had , it was very astute business.

I suppose my point was, under Evans, I'd doubt we'd have even been able to attract this calibre of player would we. Plus we are getting deals done and dusted with minimal fuss. It does show yo7 what money can do. And it underlines the state of football these days, and that it's nearly all about money. Town with rich backers are now suddenly desirable to play for.it's wrong in so many ways isn't it, But this doesn't make fans who follow Town fickle...it's about time we had something to cheer about and actually look forward to. There's a whole generation who have had nothing to get excited about following this Club.

I hope PR is full to the rafters with fickle fans this coming season, and PR is rocking again. It's our turn to enjoy some good luck isn't it .

COYBS

2 players almost in the bag at an early stage is a positive...still think our scouting system needs to improve, 1 player that the new CEO knew about from his time at Bristol and the other from Cook's time at Wigan.

Another good signing and just like the Wes Burns signing strong and physical seems to be Cook's main aim to get more physicality in the team as well as ability. It's not going to go down well with a lot of fans seeing their favourites replaced who have been here years and have become part of the furniture. But the facts are they have failed to deliver season after season. It's going to take time for the team to gel so it's important that more pre season games than normal are arranged. Can't wait for the season to get going.

Evans has played over 100 games in the Championship and has won League One on two occasions so should bring plenty of experience to the team. 26 is a good age too.

TimmyH. His wikipedia says he only played 9 games but according to football league world story, he started 24 games after having had knee surgery in january. So suspect his wikipedia is wrong.

In cook we trust. Bringing in players who he has worked with before so knows their ability and possibly, more importantly, their attitude.

Delighted. He looks a tough cookie.

Not the type of high profile signings we were led to expect . If Marcus Evans had made them the site would be full of complaints about lack of ambition

This shows really good intent for the coming season getting 2 players in and it's only early June.
