Town Confirm Evans Signing
Friday, 4th Jun 2021 19:13

Town have confirmed the signing of Wigan midfielder Lee Evans on a three-year deal, TWTD having revealed that the Blues were targeting the 26-year-old back in April.

Evans, who was a free agent with his Latics deal up this summer, travelled to Suffolk today to undergo a medical and complete the formalities on his move.

"This is a huge football club and it’s a massive honour to be here. It’s been a great day for me, signing for a club like this and I’m already looking forward to pre-season," he told iFollow Ipswich.

"I’ve had a few chats with the manager and he expressed his desire to bring me in. It’s an exciting move for me and having seen the club today with the facilities, I can’t wait to get going.

"I’ve played for the manager before and he has shown a lot of faith in me in bringing me here in a season when there is only one aim and that is to get promoted. That’s a big compliment to me and I can’t thank him enough.

"Hopefully I will be part of a successful team because that’s what everyone associated with Ipswich wants."

Evans was taken to the DW Stadium by Blues boss Cook on loan from Wolves for the 2017/18 campaign in which the Latics carried off the League One title.

That led to a £750,000 move to Sheffield United, then in the Championship, but after a year with the Blades Evans returned to Wigan on another loan in the summer of 2018 before the switch was made permanent the following January.

Evans, who has been called four times by Wales, had been released by Bristol Rovers as a 15-year-old and joined hometown club Newport County where he broke into the first team when only two years older in 2012.

In January 2013, Wolves paid a reported £200,000 for his services and the four-times-capped Wales international went on to be a member of the side which won the League One title in 2013/14 season.

He featured in the Championship during the following campaign but spent 2015/16 back in League One with Bradford before returning to Wolves for the next season, prior to joining Wigan for his first loan spell.

Yesterday, the Blues made Fleetwood's Wes Burns the first signing of the Cook and Gamechanger eras. We understand that in addition to Coventry, the Blues fought off two other Championship clubs, Hull City and Millwall, to land the forward.

Glenpennyfather the huge difference between now and two years ago are these players are proven at this level and above the only player out of those players and hurst really proven is Edwards at a push but again none were proven at championship level these guys have been and had other championship clubs after them and we fought for their signature.

Proven at this level? You mean played for clubs who finished below us. Surely it means all our squad are proven at this level? I don't see us having beaten off competition for either of these guys. Hopefully both prove to be good signings but Nolan and Nsiala got to the play-offs in this league. Does that mean they are proven when clearly neither are good enough, Wigan only just stayed up so hardly suggests Evans was pulling up trees. Some realism please. We are a league one club signing league one players that championship clubs didn't want. Cook shows no loyalty to clubs so why do you assume he has a long term plan when it comes to us? He's not been offered a decent championship club job but you think his record suggests he'd stay if he was? Strange that he hasn't been offered a good job at championship level…. Maybe football knows something we don't,

The structure has been put in place, there is a plan and now the players that we need want to come here, they see something building.
Proper excited this time, this feels transformative, let the good ties roll.

No Monkey Blue our players have proven at this level they are not good enough. Burns and Evans have been outstanding at this level that is the difference. Cook's judgement of a player must be pretty good other wise he would not have been so successful.

The good thing about the 2 signings is that Ashton has had his targets(supplied by Cook) since before he came through the door and the future looks good, we have for far too long been in the comfort zone(for players) started by big gob and his favourite proper blokes and as a result when he was booted left the club in a situation(whoever the manager happened to be) where these players had to much influence because they crept round Marcus Evans who was quite happy to oversee mediocrity as long as he didn't spend money, we now have a very very positive set for a change and players want to come and join our great club well done Mr Cook and the new regime for clearing out the problem's that have cost us dearly over the last few seasons now lets all get together on and off the park and get out of the division by making Portman Road as noisy and intimidating as possible and drive the boys onwards and upwards.
