Barnsley Linked With Downes
Saturday, 12th Jun 2021 16:05

Championship Barnsley are reported to be preparing an offer for Blues midfielder Flynn Downes.

The 22-year-old has been told he can find a new club this summer along with most of his team-mates.

Now, according to Football Insider, the Tykes are set to make a move for the former England U19 and U20 international.

Last summer, the Blues turned down two offers from Crystal Palace for Downes of £1.2 million and then £1.6 million with the Brentwood-born academy product subsequently handing in a transfer request.

Downes, who is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2022 with the club having an option for a further season, made 17 starts and eight sub appearances for Town in 2020/21 and in total has made 75 starts and 25 sub appearances for the club, scoring three times.

blues1, let me give you an example
Bart was on 20k and his wages were to drop to 4k,hence millwall. Now assume the lads signed deals at £6/7k a week. with no drop, top end
The lad a Luton was offered lass than £3k and was coming until they offered him 3.5k to stay
Sorry but we have a huge squad with great kids and as much as we won't get top dollar, we have to shift some on at the moment to meet the new cap

Downes “ left” this Club the day Palace showed interest in him. He's never wanted to stay from that moment on . Chance to play st the highest level . Yes I can understand that . But if he leaves for a Championship Club then he's in it for the money IMO, because if he stays at this Club he will be in the Championship very soon.

These players just simply do not have loyalty any more.

Dog. If you think we were on the cusp of the playoffs bcse of a run of 3 wins ur deluded. And we were unbeaten at home under cook at the end of the season. And it was the players who downed tools who were the problem, just bcse cook told them the truth and basically challenged them to perform or go. I've forgotten the number of times if I said I was u happy in my job that my manager told me, if u dont like it you onow where the door is. But did i down tools. No, I had pride in myself and continued to do my best. Shame they didnt.

Bazza8564. Ur point was about the youngsters not having a relegation clause. As I said, that was bcse their wages were less than the 1st teams. If u really believed all the rubbish about Bart being on £20,000, then sorry, ur deluded. In fact uve contradicted urself bcse players were forced to take a50% cut in wages on relegation. So how do u work out he was on that amount when, as u say his wages were going down to £4000?

Bazza8564. As for the luton guy. We never even got the stage of making him an offer. Football insider actually reported that we were preparing to make an offer but he decided to stay. And wed have been offering more than £3000 a week anyway. Why, when our squad is likely to be smaller next season would we suddenly be offering less wages than before. With the money saved by having less players to pay we wont need to. And wed hardly be able to attract better quality players if we offered that kind of money.

Blues1 - we were 7th, one point off play offs when cook was appointed. That is the cusp of play offs - check dictionary for meaning of cusp.

As for offering less wages, after 2 years in division we have to follow league 1 rules now and use 60% of turnover. For the previous two seasons we had the amount adjusted due to relegation and championship wages.

Lets see who we sign next week. Hopefully, some decent players, and also i hope we keep our own, otherwise what is the point of Klug and academy. Downes, Woolfenden, Dobra are all good enough.

I would like to see Downes, Dozzell, Woolfenden, Dobra stay for another season as in a properly fit, motivated and lead set up they could prosper. While understanding his frustration, I think that PC made a mistake in saying that the whole squad could go at the end of the season. While trimming it is a good idea, I think that there is a reasonable nucleus (K V-Y, Norwood, plus 'our' four) which, if supplemented with half a dozen players of the ilk that we are being linked with, could produce a very competitive starting line-up with a few of our remaining players making up the rest of the squad with more funds being made available in January if needed.
In conclusion I think that 'our' four could foot it in the Championship but would prefer it was with us... anyway lets see how it turns out .... coyb

Blues1, I didn't say anything about 50%, all I said was that I have first hand knowledge of players (no t necessarily Downes) signing longer deals but by doing so to get maximum value in transfers for the club down the line they protected themselves by not agreeing to relegation clauses, hence the economics make it a factor. As for Luton lad and Bart, again, that information came via let us say, a very good source, and explains why a guy with an 80% drop in wages was moved on very very quickly, and initially on loan in case we bounced straight back, as soon as our relegation was confirmed.
I don't want players like Downes to go, my point is simply economics are a factor. And I stand by my belief that Football insider don't know as much as they want people to think.

For all those with a negative opinion on cook you might want to take a look at Burnley's first 16 games in charge, lost 12 won 3 drew 1 that included an 8 match losing run which incorporated the infamous 9-0 thrashing at Man Utd. I am so glad we gave burley the chance to turn the team around! For now Cook should be given the chance by us all true town supporters.

Dozzell and Downers both linked with Premiership clubs, but not good enough for blabber mouth Cook.
