Sears Rejoins Colchester
Tuesday, 15th Jun 2021 19:04

Colchester United have confirmed the re-signing of former Blues striker Freddie Sears on a two-year deal

"It means more coming back, just raring to get going,” Sears told the U’s official site.

“Coming back to the stadium, going back to the training ground, and seeing everyone again makes it feel special and I'm raring to get going again.

"I can't wait to get back in with the boys and looking to the new season ahead."

The U’s made an approach for the 31-year-old in January and a return to the JobServe Community Stadium always seemed likely this summer, with the frontman having continued to live in the area, although other clubs, understood to include Leyton Orient, also showed interest.

Sears was released by the Blues at the end of the season having been in and out of the side throughout 2020/21, scoring three times in 18 starts and 11 sub appearances.

The striker joined Town from the U’s for £200,000 in January 2015 and was part of the side which reached the Championship play-offs that season, firing in nine goals for the Blues having netted 14 for the North Essex side in the first half of the campaign.

In total, Sears made 151 starts and 66 sub appearances while at Portman Road, scoring 34 times.

The Hornchurch-born striker initially joined Colchester from West Ham in July 2012 following a loan spell.

Sears is the third player released by the Blues to join Colchester this summer with ex-skipper Luke Chambers and Cole Skuse also having signed two-year deals.

Also in the squad are former Town defenders Tommy Smith and Tom Eastman and ex-Blues keeper Dean Gerken.

Meanwhile, the U’s are in talks with one-time Blues striker Frank Nouble regarding a return to the club. The 29-year-old free agent ended last season on loan with Colchester from Plymouth.

I'm mainly looking forward to the new arrivals and breath of fresh air at the club, in part to avoid all this consternation amongst town fans about players who took us into League 1. I'm sure they were nice guys who tried, and no hard feelings, but I'm really not bothered about where our ex-players are.

Good luck to him. But very poor for us for a long time. I really worry for Col U with Sears, Chambers and Skuse. Just doesn't work.

A little surprised by the vitriol towards Freddie on here. Not a world beater by any means (Like Chambers), but from what i saw always gave his best for the club every time he played (Like Chambers !). 100% agreement that he should be released, but don't understand the bad feeling towards someone who gave us their best.....even if it wasn't necessarily that great.

It makes me laugh how the rose tinted glasses come out after some of these players have left the club. During the Evans era we've had some good ones come and go; the likes of Mings, Murphy, McGoldrick, Berra, Cresswell, Norris, Wickham, McCauley , Delaney, Leadbitter and so on (I'm sure there are many others that I've forgotten). Accepting that the player budget was cut and that we were shopping at Lidl level rather than Sainsbury's (obviously we haven't shopped at Waitrose for a long time) but I associate all of these players with failure and decline and thank my lucky stars that we're having this clear out as the club needs a total reset if we are to move forward. Chambers had his moments and there was no denying his heart but the last couple of years or so have been defined by his lack of quality - can't hit a simple pass much of the time, out of position and cart horse slow. Skuse - was anyone there that day at Newcastle when he put in one of those performances that was so dire as to make you cringe that a pro footballer was capable of being that bad, Sears showed flashes of ability, pace and finishing skills but whilst he deserves come sympathy for being played put of position, the reality is that good players stand out wherever they play and whatever the system and he rarely did, As for Wilson - no player sums up the malaise of this club better - a Lincoln reject that played like a clown at times winning player of the season in a year when we finished 11th in division 3 because yes folks those are the facts. Like many others, I cheered these guys on match days and convinced myself of my own bullsh1t that they were all better than they were and started each season full of hope and belief when really they were bang average or worse. I wish none of them ill will but let's not get carried away with romantic notions. No club has any divine right to success but after all the suffering of the last few years let's be glad that these overpaid and overprivileged under performers are being replaced rather than giving credit when very little is justified or deserved.

Another post, another Robsonwark abuse 🤦‍♂️

Mate, do yourself a favour and go and join an after school club somewhere, your comments are not wanted by most and your opinion is flawed on most topics. It's a disgrace that you use two Town legends names to spout your rubbish on here!

Too many sad, negative so-called fans who comment.

All the players mentioned have made a good move given the stage of their careers and it is a good move for Colchester United too, who struggled last season with an inexperienced squad.

Good luck Freddie. I hope you get a good run of games and not just the odd outing playing out of position. Never stopped trying, never sulked (McGoldrick, Jackson et al). I think the Us will be Ok this season.

Don't get all the love on here for sears...its pathetic...he was a over rated, over paid, waste of space and one of the reasons we got into this mess and couldn't even cut it in league one. Good riddance he's gone. The facts don't lie.

All the best to you Freddie from big gob through to the end you have been messed about position wise and as a result became a target for unfair criticism, credit to you for always putting in an honest shift whilst not complaining about the dreadful way you were treated.

Sears was a very good striker who was destroyed by being forced to play a wide role which was not playing to his strengths. Unfortunately he was one of our few natural goal scorers who had his confidence destroyed. He will be a success at Col Utd but we must now recruit at least two strikers as we haven't got goals in the team
