First-Teamers Set to Start Pre-Season Training With U23s
Wednesday, 23rd Jun 2021 11:51

Flynn Downes, Kayden Jackson, Teddy Bishop, Armando Dobra, Myles Kenlock, Jack Lankester and Brett McGavin are set to start pre-season training with the Blues U23s later this week.

At the end of the season, manager Paul Cook told most of the first-team squad that they could move on in the summer and the Blues boss appears to be reinforcing the point by relegating a number of them from first-team pre-season training, which begins on Saturday.

Lists of players set to start pre-season training with the first team and the U23s have been circulating on social media this morning with only 11 players included in the senior squad. However, both lists indicate that the situation could change “at the manager’s discretion”.

Downes is understood to be interesting Championship Barnsley and we understand the MK Dons' interest in Bishop, which we revealed this morning, is well progressed.

The 24-year-old has also been eyed by hometown club Cambridge United, who, according to the EADT are now showing interest in Lankester.

It has been a quiet close season with regard to links with Jackson, Kenlock and Lankester. Huddersfield were keen on Jackson late in the January window but have not been mentioned in connection with the 27-year-old during the summer.

Coke why wouldn't the club ask for it to be deleted if it was fake? (which looks likely). This exact reaction is the reason they wouldn't want it up

CokelsKey. Ur talking as much rubbish as the person who posted it on social media to start with. The fact u say the club have asked for it to be taken down shows its rubbish. What, they found out within minutes of it being posted that it was on social media? Really? It looks dodgy bcse it is dodgy. Every man and his dog know its fake.

The key wording is "Subject to change at the manager's discretion". To me, that is an obvious call to arms for those demoted to U23s - for whatever reason - to re-apply for their first team positions

Had to Google Corrie Ndaba.... and I had almost forgotten about the kneeinjury Jon Nolan

This is a bit harsh but our last two seasons have been crap, despite which our bloated roster of pros still got to live in massive houses and drive fancy cars. Being a pro footballer is a good job if you can get one but you should expect to do the work.

Man up or ship out.

With Kenlock in the U23, we have no left back (if this is to be believed)

algarvefan, just to jog your memory , before his injury last season Jon Nolan was probably our best player at the time. He was playing well and scoring goals. He Deserves to be in first team dressing room if only for his efforts last season before his injury.

Time to judge is when the pre season games begin and you actually see the makeup of the teams sent out for first and under 23 games.

This is the sort of story that needs to be true for TWTD's sake. Publishing this without corroboration would be close to despicable, and far from being in any way to the benefit of the Club we are all supposed to love.

If it is true, and our new owners talking about keeping 10% of the squad is at least in line with this, then trust that the situation has been explained to individuals, and as we have all seen over the years, nothing is cast in stone. Trust the process! COYB

Fake news is everywhere these days. Best thing to do is ignore it, or treat it all as fake until proven otherwise.

Not sure why there's a backlash on this story. We've been told for a while now that we're only keeping about 10% of our first teamers. IMO those that are left have a chance to dig in and prove to Cook they want to play for us next season, like Dobra has intimated.

In any other industry, the unions would be all over the situation. If I was on the naughty list at my place of work, I'd find a new job before hitting them with a constructed dismissal claim. It'd be that or they could buy out my contract so I could jog on.

Accidentally upvoted a post being negative towards TWTD. I trust Phil to post news stories that have some validity. The amount of stuff that goes on on Twitter and isn't reported suggests there is something in this.

I do not understand why people are shocked by this, it's not news. We knew the academy boys had been told to move on if they can. While we are a sentimental bunch, who want our own to do well, clearly Cook isn't. I am delighted. Marcus led us down a dark alley, where our best staff decided to leave as they saw the road the club was going down. The players have not shown any sort of fight or desire to get out of this league and it's about we had a reset. We are in the worst position most Ipswich fans have witnessed and yet we still want to keep the players who have led us here, in the hope they become good.

I am willing to fully trust Cook to get us out of this mess. He was a proven record, and usually his record involves complete overhauls. A manager prefers people he trusts, shock!! You don't get many 3 year deals at this level, it's usually 1 with a few 2s. It's normal for clubs at this level to go through overhauls.

We finally have something to look forward to with the new owners and a footballing CEO. Let's be positive. It's no surprise this doesn't come naturally considering the dross we have had to put up with but let's try!

Why would Holy be included in the 1st team, when it has been reported here that he is free to move on? We are on the look-out for a new goalie so what would happen when we sign one, Holy moves to U23s?

There is no way that there is any truth in this whatsoever.

@bergholtblue because we need a keeper to train with is my guess. Drinan also rumoured not to be back in the country yet, to respond to others.

Good to see that Nolan did enough to impress the manager 😂

Even if this story was to be true it's up to the players to prove to Cook they are up for the fight for first team football or not .

Sounds like Drinan is gone too according to this. we will know soon enough.

Let's hope Jackson can be used as a bargaining chips for Colby Bishop othewise I can't see who is going to take him. Might end up being a loan out to get his wages off the books for the year I suspect.

I am sceptical about anything on social media without a source or quote, however given KOA have stated that some players were told if they didn't find a club they wouldn't be involved in Pre-season this seems believable. It is weird however that Drinan isn't on the list and smacks of possibly a fake where someone has forgotten him. Although if we see he's leaving in the next 24 hours?

PhilTWTD added 15:40 - Jun 23
Surprised at the scepticism about this story. Had fully expected a situation along these lines given so many players have been told they can leave. Drinan apparently in Ireland and presumably been given additional time off, as is not uncommon.
