Pompey Give Blues Permission to Speak to Winger - Report
Wednesday, 23rd Jun 2021 14:24

Town are reported to have been given permission to talk terms with Portsmouth winger Michael Jacobs.

The 29-year-old was a member of Cook’s Wigan side which carried off the League One title in 2017/18 before leaving the Latics for Pompey in the summer of 2020.

Now, the Portsmouth News is reporting that the Blues have made a move for the wideman and the Hampshire side have given the go-ahead for him to talk to Town about a switch to Portman Road.

They report that Portsmouth have concerns regarding Jacob’s fitness due to a persistent knee injury, while they also have other options at left wing and his wages might be better used elsewhere in the squad.

Rothwell-born Jacobs started his career with Northampton, during which time he had a spell on loan at Nuneaton, before joining Derby County in the summer 2012.

Two years later he moved on to Wolves following a loan spell, then spent another stint on loan at Blackpool before joining Wigan in 2015.

Last season, Jacobs, who has another year left on his contract at Fratton Park, scored twice in 13 starts and nine sub appearances for Pompey before his knee problem ended his campaign in April.

Don't know much about him but why we would be looking to bring in a player who remains injured is beyond me.

The number of times we did that under Evans and it blew up in our faces should ring alarm bells here!

Surely our Norwood experience shows not much point in having decent players if they are in the treatment room on match day.

Bit worrying about his injury record! Let's hope if we get him it will improve. Already got an injury prone player in Norwood. Keep our fingers crossed.

hoppy…. I meant I don't recall him, not that he didn't. I assume you watched that game and came away raving about him, couldn't get him out of your head. All I meant was he didn't stand out. I couldn't have named their line up as I'm not Rain Man, and he wouldn't have been someone therefore I thought would be great in our side.

29 year old Winger - just what we don't need.
Injury worries - sign him up

I'm just going to say this once and probably get marked down for it!

PC has surrounded himself with people either he or the COO have worked with before and now he is on track to buy up as many of his ex-players as he can, this wasn't the route I expected and to me isn't one that will guarantee success, the success we all want. The signings have been too slow and seem problematic, very much the mark of the earlier days of the old regime. I really want us to do well and I really want to believe in PC and what he is doing, but the jury is still out for me. We have some lovely developing young talent at our club, sure the motivation hasn't been there, but it can be and THAT is the managers job. So I say to PC please don't sell the family silver, a mix is what is required.

That's it, I'm not being negative but am currently concerned, I hope I'm wrong to be!

@Monkey_Blue

"I don't recall if he played against us...", that's verbatim what you wrote. Plain English. I think plain English seems to be one of your problems... along with certain dodgy "facts" and "evidence" you like to bandy about when it suits you.

Backtracking and pretending that's not what you meant is just a poor excuse.

Get your facts right, based on evidence, in the first instance... simples!

However, I will agree with you that a 29/30 year old, injury prone player is not what would be considered a good fit here anymore. We need everyone firing on all cylinders for the whole season.

It would be nice, too, to tie up a few more decent signings in the very, very near future. We seem to have stalled a bit on the incoming transfer front lately.

We are trying to get the marquee players but they don't see the appeal of what we are offering, fair play to be in for Jermaine Defoe, but the only people who care and remember about us being a great club are we ourselves and Paul Cook, but the club has sunk so much in the last 20 years, surviving on one marquee loan signing per season, and not developing our own players, so we are shopping at the level where we might get some players in the building for pre season. Yes that seems to have dropped to injured players too. The goalkeeper in Scotland could still fall through too. Aren't we back in training yet? Col U will be looking forward to playing us in the Pizza Trophy or caribou cup.

Hi lads, pompey fan here, aswell us town… this guy is very injury prone, will miss most of the season but under cook at Wigan they worked well, pompey and most fans are happy to see the back of this guy as he wasn't that good and always out injured, your be very very lucky to get half a season out of him and his wages are high

Was ever present for Wigan under Paul Cook wasn't he ? And only at Pompey one ? ( Maybe two) seasons …. Knee injury not settling , or maybe simply the player not settling at Pompey ? Can't see Cook bringing in any duds , he knows this player inside out .

I find davidswindlehurst comment quite worrying, if pompey fans glad to see back of him and we will be lucky to get half a season doesn't look to promising. Alarm bells rang for me when he brought his mate the kit man in from Wigan as a coach when he said he prefers to be a kit man. Hopefully Ashtons clever plan and his method of working out who to get and who to avoid does overtime on this one and makes sure we don't get a half a season player.

Was a good player at Wigan but been hampered by injuries since. For me, a firm no.
