Blues Closing in On Former Owl Penney
Sunday, 27th Jun 2021 19:37

Town are closing in on the signing of Sheffield Wednesday left-back Matt Penney.

According to the EADT Penney is set to join Paul Cook's Town revolution and we understand that is the case with the deal likely to be confirmed on Monday along with the signing of Salford keeper Vaclav Hladky, who TWTD revealed is close to joining the Blues earlier this afternoon.

The 23-year-old, who can also operate in wide midfield, is out of contract having left the Owls at the end of the season having made 10 starts and five sub appearances during 2020/21.

Chesterfield-born Penney had been with Wednesday since he was eight years old, although spent time on loan at Bradford in 2016/17, Mansfield in 2017/18 and in Germany with St Pauli in 2019/20.

In total, Penney made 22 starts and 10 sub appearances for the Owls without scoring.

As long as he is better than Kenlock. Then sign him up
Think Kenlock has done quite well and felt he was better than Ward.

Don't know much about this one but has some championship experience possibly cook will alternate him and kenlock who does have a stinker every now and again. Still expect Jacobs to come in on that left hand side. Cook trusts him and this lad can cover if he is out plus Dobra of course

We aren't messing about. This is a problem position for us, so a player of his age and experience would be a step up from what we have. I am loving this close season. Keep them coming.

Surely it should be Town in for a Penney

LB not a priority, with Kenlock, Clements, Smith, and Ndaba to fight it out. But another left-sided player never a bad thing :-)

This lad looks very very interesting. Ok he wasn't pulling any trees up at Sheffield with only ten championship appearances last season, however he spent a season in the Bundesliga 2 (second tier of Germany) scoring one cracking goal. He was taken there by the former Wednesday Dutch manager Jos Luhukay.

Quite a few Youtube clips of his U23 career with several cracking goals. Free kick specialist and reminds me a bit of Luke Garbutt. Can play left mid and winger as well as full back which seems to be his more prominent role.

Looks like a definite up grade on what we have, Clements or Smith no where near this guy in U23 performances let alone playing at second tier level. Myles Kenlock maybe a bit unlucky as he does not seem to be in favour with most managers but doesn't seem to have quite the same in his locker as this guy.

As a free signing I would be happy to see this one go through, think he could develop into a real asset and grow in value to a few Bob or two.

With Derby in real threat to starting the new campaign in Division 1 with the issue of provisional fixture list last week subject to Wycombe's fixtures being swapped with Derby, this may be good move for us on the Matt Crooks move - would really like this to happen although I did pick up rumour from Derby fan that Waghorn is also currently in discussion with us!!!!

Have to say i don't know anything about any of the signing's other than seeing the goal the Fleetwood lad scored against us which was impressive to say the least.
Will just have to trust in Paul Cooks judgement lol

No one heard of Jamie Clapham in 1997, then look how he turned out as a pro.

Cant believe Nobbysnuts has never heard of Matt Penney and arc you forgot about young Liam Gibbs. He would be a great cover for Penney. As for Vaclav Hladky will he be No1 or back up for Siegrist if we get him?

Once again, positivity above is pleasing.
We wanted lambert out - g0ne
Evans out, - gone
Owners with money to (vest - done
Manager with drive and ambition who isn't afraid to do what's necessary - yep!
Clear out of squad - tick.

Personally I'm more excited about the new season than for decades.

Another Cook signing who can play in multi positions. I see a trend in his signings

Yes we definitely need a left back but im not sure if this lad is the answer or just another squad player who can play in various positions. Kenlock is ok going forward but cannot defend against wingers who are physically strong and run at him. Nsaba, Smith and Clements will not be up to the standard Cook's looking for.

I wonder if we will also try to sign his dad Pennyfather.
