Town Crooks Bid Well Short of Rotherham Valuation
Wednesday, 30th Jun 2021 15:39

Town are reported to have made a £400,000 offer to Rotherham United for midfielder Matt Crooks, a bid which falls well short of the Millers' valuation.

The Blues have been in discussions with the South Yorkshiremen, who were relegated to League One in 2020/21, regarding Crooks since early in the month but, according to the Rotherham Advertiser, their initial bid of £400,000 is said to be well below the South Yorkshire club’s price-tag.

TWTD understands talks remain ongoing and Town appear to be in a strong position to get their man.

Championship sides Middlesbrough and Peterborough are also understood to be interested but have not yet made a move and Derby have been linked but are currently subject to a transfer embargo, while League One Sunderland have also been mentioned as among the suitors.

Rotherham manager Paul Warne says his club is is not in a position where they need to sell and are less than keen on allowing a player to move to a rival League One side.

“We don’t want to lose our best assets, even more so not to a League One rival. That would make it ridiculous,” he told the Advertiser.

“However, as with everything, there is a figure where it becomes impossible not to let it happen. As far as I am aware, no one is anywhere near that figure yet.”

Leeds-born Crooks, who has a year left on his Rotherham contract, begins pre-season training with his Millers team-mates today.

Crooks, who can operate either in defensive or attacking midfield roles, was a schoolboy with Manchester United’s academy before moving on to Huddersfield with whom he made one senior appearance.

While with the Terriers he spent time on loan at FC Halifax, Radcliffe Borough and Accrington before joining Stanley on a permanent basis in 2016.

In July 2016 he joined Rangers in Scotland but six months later he departed for a loan spell at Scunthorpe having been unable to make an impression at Ibrox.

A switch to Northampton followed in the summer of 2017 before he moved on to Rotherham in January 2019 and was a member of the side which won promotion to the Championship the next season, scoring both goals - out of a campaign total of 11 - in the Millers’ 2-0 victory over the Blues at Portman Road.

In 2020/21, Crooks netted seven times as the South Yorkshiremen dropped back into League One.

In March it was reported that Rotherham had held preliminary talks with Crooks regarding a new deal in the wake of the interest from Nottingham Forest.

We've got cash, other clubs know that and will try holding us to ransome. Being a defensive midfielder I'd guess a lot depends on the Downes situation?

Derisory bid. Make a proper respectable bid and get him over the line.

Sell on Downes who doesn't want to be at Ipswich and use some of it to agree at a sensible level.

Crooks will make all the difference at this level and Downes is not interested. If necessary sell/loan off a couple more fringe players. Cook keeps saying he works with a small squad- let him prove it by giving him one !

Always bossed the midfield whenever iv seen him play! I hope we can offer something that can be accepted!

Of course that would get rejected, Rotherham would be losing crooks to a direct rival and is one of their best players

Blimey , £400k, as a die hard Town fan, even I can see that's an insult of an offer!!

The press will always be miles behind the reality, especially the local press on the reluctant seller. This deal will get done, ashton is too good not to get his man if he sets his sights on him

It was rather a low offer and you can understand Rotherham turning it down wanting to get as much as they can for one of their main assets. They also know Town have got cash to play with now so if we want him we have to cough up the money. It all depends how badly Cook wants him, hopefully as much as all of us fans do!

If Cook wants to play 4,2,3,1 then he might think about playing Downes with Crooks instead of getting rid of Downes. Playing alongside a better player might make Downes a better player.

Needs to be upped…probably 650k would do it.

Good point DavefromWatford but I believe Downes wants away so best to let him go and secure the best fee we can. We also need to be careful we don't end up with too many defensive minded players in the midfield- look where it has got England !

Sell Downes [ who clearly wants to leave ] for £1.5m and buy Crooks for probably £0.75m. Good job done.

I'm just pleased we are competitive in the transfer market again and making bids for these type of quality players.

£400,000 is a good offer for a division one club. It is very easy to spend someone else's money and not many transfers in this league will be larger than that. I can see both sides of the story. I could well be wrong but I would have thought we might go to £500,000 but not a lot higher.

I agree, Rotherham will be after at least something over 600K based on his valuation. A bid between 650K-750K should seal the deal for a goalscoring defensive midfield player. Rotherham ideally don't want to let him go but MA will be offering more than the initial 400K that's been reported 2nd time round as hopefully an accepted counter offer. Hopefully, other interested clubs don't get a look in. This would be a decent signing for Town. COYB

Just get it done, if Jackson was worth £1.5m then this last is certainly worth £1m!!

Looks like our financial limitations have already been exposed.

No one signed so far suggests the fees many were imagining a few weeks back.

However, judgement will be made when the window closes, and proof will be seen when the season finishes.

He didn't look very defensive against us he scored two goals. Its always been the case when bidding for a player you go in with a low bid after all it's a auction. Don't think wages will be a problem just the competition.

Likelihood is whatever we spend on him we should "hopefully" recoup on Downes when he is sold.

Do they need a pacey striker, I can think of one to add to the mix.....

Think this suggested bid is speculation anyway. Theres nothing on rotherham site suggesting this to be the case. Sounds like poor journalism by some paper or another, or an agent, to me. Guess, regardless of how things go regarding him, we'll never know the truth about that tho.
