Cook: Start of Pre-Season Exciting But Building a Team Can Be a Slow Process
Wednesday, 30th Jun 2021 19:21

Boss Paul Cook says the first few days of pre-season have been exciting but has warned that building a new team can be a slow process.

The Town squad returned for pre-season training on Saturday with six new signings now involved at Playford Road. A number of last season’s first-teamers are training with the U23s, although as reported at the weekend Armando Dobra has been promoted back to the senior squad.

“There may have been some concerns from the supporters following the drastic action at the end of last season, but we are starting to build a new team and that can be a slow process," Cook told the club site.

“We're looking to bring quality into the club and I am really delighted with what we have done so far.

“We were in a difficult position with where we finished last season, so naturally there was unhappiness around the club.

“Going forward though, I think the supporters will be pleased to hear that we are going through every detail in terms of recruitment.

“To make a good team you need a mix of experience, youth, energy, goals - there are a lot of factors. We've had meetings with the board and [CEO] Mark Ashton and we are aligned in what we want to do.

“Everyone wants the best for the club and we're working on what is required to take us forward.

“We've returned for pre-season now which is great, and we want to see the players integrating and gelling because we will need that after a lot of change. The first few days of pre-season have been exciting.”

Great signings to date. All credit to the team.
I'd say we need another 4-5 players in. Really need an experienced centre back, left winger and another striker.

Do hope the excitement factor sticks around and materialises on the field of play, and in the pattern and style to generate enthusiasm and results !

It's been interesting that we haven't had the usual start-of-preseason photos. Clearly, with all the ins and outs still happening Cook doesn't want us seeing what's going on. I wonder what the mood is like.

Lovely teeth - my daughter is also having her teeth whitened at the moment. £100 a chuck apparently.

Great to see Dobra is back in first team squad, looks like he is showing the grit and fight that PC is looking for. He could be a man possessed next season!

You'd think he'd have gone for a hair transplant before bringing in a whole bunch of new teeth 😬

On the football side…. Not sure how “exciting” working with a dozen players can be but your hardly
Expect him to say anything other than how great it is.

I've faith in Cook to turn our fortunes around BUT that was always going to be a 'get out clause' giving him more time to get the job done and that was to get rid of a lot of players and bring quite a few new faces in. As I said a week or so back will be amazed if he gets us promoted in a season.

Paul Hurst didn't get a lot of time...he was sacked within a few months.

Sounds like Cook is getting his excuses in early.

ABSOLUTE RUBBISH, FULL OF HIMSELF I HAVE SEEN NOTHING TO THINK WE ARE NOT IN FOR ANOTHER TERRIBLE SEASON, HEADING FOR DIVISION 2. ALL REJECTS, FAILED PLAYERS, BLUFF. IF COOK IS SO GOOD HOW COME HES LANDED AT IPSWICH?

more negative comments give the new players a chance to prove they are up for the fight before slagging them off

TimmyH… faith is what people use as an excuse to believe stuff they have no good evidence for. I assume you believe in Adam and Eve and Noah's ark?

Pencilpete has it, stay calm and get behind the manager, who by the way has had previous success. He has an uphill task, and replacing an utterly abject squad was clearly necessary, and if these are players he wanted and is happy with, then let's get excited too.

You really are a pleb Monkey_Blue - always the pessimist trying to find fault in everything, what a stupid thing to say. So who would you have in as manager then?

just give it a rest monkey poo. If you are so unhappy just leave no one will care and no one will miss you. Probably sums up your whole existence.

Im loving this work overall. Put these signings into context, not only are they experienced at a decent age at a higher level but they are also signed early.

I think this shows the value they put on giving Cook what he wants which is teamwork over individuals.

There is no greater show of support in a manager IMO

Wholesale changes didn't work for Hurst. Why would it work this time?

Because it seems like the right thoughts have been put into the players and the outgoing players weren't given away cheaply and worsening the squad.

Let's hope Cooks preferred tactics are more than the one liner that got hurst his job “playing out from the back” (using substandard players who cannot hold the ball under pressure, although we just sold Webster who can do exactly this)
