Cook: Delighted By Summer Business But More to Come
Saturday, 10th Jul 2021 15:46

Boss Paul Cook says he’s delighted with the six additions he’s made to his squad so far but wouldn’t be drawn on the position regarding the other players currently being targeted.

Quizzed on the summer of change at Portman Road, Cook said: “I genuinely won’t be speaking about last year and stuff like that, I don’t feel there’s any need to. I don’t feel the need to go over old ground. I think the most important thing now is tomorrow and the future of the club.

“We are going to sign more players in this window and we are going to go to the starting blocks as one of the favourites in the league to go up and we want to stand up and be counted within that.”

Regarding the business done up to now, he said: “Terrific, delighted, I’ve had great support from [CEO] Mark [Ashton], the owners, from everyone at the club.

“The new performance lads have come in and been terrific. My own staff have come in and been terrific.

“There’s a real good camaraderie, a feel-good factor around the club, which I enjoy, and it’s onwards and upwards for us.

“We’re not stupid, I’ve been around football a long time to know there are bumps and bruises and plenty of them along the way but we will have a really united club this year with all one goal, which is trying to be promoted.”

Ashton has said that having already signed six senior players, the Blues are after another five additions this summer.

“Let Mark speak for himself on those ones!” Cook laughed. “As you can imagine, we’re after good players, and that’s the brutal truth of it.

“We’re in a position at the minute where we’re down the line with some, we’re still debating others and Mark behind the scenes is working tirelessly to make these things happen.

“We all want it done today and yesterday, no one more so than myself, the staff and the rest of the players. But if you get the right players it will be well, well worth waiting for, and that’s what we’re prepared to do as a club.”

Town are in discussions regarding the return of former loanee Bersant Celina with further bids expected for Rotherham midfielder Matt Crooks with discussions ongoing.

The Blues are also a long way down the line with Everton defender Lewis Gibson, while Almería winger Arvin Appiah and Middlesbrough left-back Hayden Coulson are also targets.

Cook wouldn’t get drawn into discussing any specific players: “I won’t get involved lads. After last year when I came in, we spent too much time debating negative stuff. We’ve had a great win today at Dartford. We’re up and running, supporters are back in and onwards and upwards from here.”

What a fun afternoon. The new players looked good - particularly Penney - and Norwood, Donacien, Nsiala and Holy looked revitalised, fitter and hungrier. How Dobra can't figure in the plans should now be old hat. And great to see we have such a good set of young lads backing them up - hope to see some of them break through this year!

Nice to start with a win and a clean sheet, long may it continue.

Pleased they are taking their time on signings. The reality is, these things do take time, and we should not rush this process.

When we have signed loans in previous seasons, they have been too raw and just learning their trade on our time, and when we have spent big, often the players have undelivered having been 'talked up' by certain owners. With the experience we have in the management hierarchy, we should all let them do their jobs, it would appear they know what they are doing.

Still very weak in the central defensive position where an experienced game reader, organiser and leader is desperately required. I'm still hoping Downes and Bishop have a part to play as well. Taking shape though, and my half empty glass is filling slowly.

Chepstow blue Bishop is gone, he can't play Cook's high press style or last 90 minutes

Downes and Bishop can go for all I care, and the sooner the better, their attitudes must be questionable if they're not even considered for the squad, same goes for Kackson and Kenlock. I will be down voted for criticising 'our own players, but Downes obviously has no loyalty to ITFC so I have none for him.

More nonsense about attitudes from some with no proof. Paul Cook made his mind up months ago on them.

Ps - non selection might be down to covid issues with under 23's.

Who knows.

Dog and you don't know either yet you speculate as well as everyone else so what makes you right and others wrong?

Beatties - all i see on here is if a player has been sold or has left this season then a number of the posters are saying it is attitude, which you and i know is wrong. It is because he was not in the managers plans, not good enough or unable to play the new high intensity football. Really nothing to do with attitude.

As for under 23, i believe the friendly was called off due to covid. Further info and announcement to follow.

I follow ipswich on newsnow and that is what the Eadt reported. You are quite correct that i don't know if the 4 first teamers have covid issues. Jackson should have some antibodies anyway. More to follow on that.

Well I would not want to talk about last year either if I was him as his record was terrible if were honest, I really hope it works out feel the new owners are a breath of fresh air and hope Cook leads us to success, just get a bad feeling about his overall attitude

So much has been done but there's an awful lot still to do. Even with a fit Nolan and KVY, we have a skeleton squad with no strength in depth, no experienced leader at the back and not enough goalscorers.

I'm confident that Ashton knows what he's doing but his dashboard should be showing more red than green right now.

I am happy with what we have at the moment, but we obviously still need players. I would be looking for an experienced CH, still need at least one in midfield and the same up front. If, as expected, they know what they are doing, I would like to see 3 new arrivals this week.

Despite what some on here think I'm desperate to be excited about this season. I can't help that after me being delighted we got Cook he has behaved and spoken in a way that's put me
Off. I also can't help feeling the carpet bombing of the squad is a huge risk. Sure, bring in 4 or 5 top recruits and let some of the squad players go…. Some I'd let go are the likes of Donacien, Nolan and Toto. Too late to do that otherwise we would be needing to sign another 8-10 players and try to integrate 16 as a team with three coaches with very little experience other than being scousers. Talk about bad attitude? Nolan tops that list.

Carpet bombing the squad Monkey? But I can see that there are one or two that Cook wants to pull the rug from under them...

Monkeyblue - how do you know that Nolan has a bad attitude. It is the first time i have seen a comment like this on a player who should be staying. Please stop. Mud sticks.

All stuff like this affects the players mental well being and we can see that last season that it affected our players. Look at Luke Thomas who came played once and went back.

Lets just chill wait another 10 days and then panic.

And for the record i am giving cook 10 games. The same 10 games it took him to carpet bomb the squad. By then after 26 games we will know if he has done the right thing or not.

I think Nolan attitude has been called into question due to him throwing a paddy about being named in a squad but not playing whereas there is a narrative that downes is disloyal because he wanted to go to a Premier league club from a disfunctional league 1 club for a fair price

markchips added 14:15 - Jul 12
Cook had stated that he likes Nolan as a player and there is no reason why he can't do a job for us, he seems to get injured a lot but only has on year on his contract so it is up to him to prove us wrong.
