Legend Butcher Exits U23s Role
Friday, 16th Jul 2021 11:58

TWTD understands Blues legend Terry Butcher will no longer be working with Town’s U23s in the season ahead.

The former Town and England captain rejoined the club in February 2020 coaching in the academy.

Last season, the 62-year-old worked alongside U23s manager Kieron Dyer coaching the development squad, who finished second in Professional Development League Two South.

However, we understand the former centre-half has been told there is no role for him on the coaching staff in 2021/22.

Dyer will be continuing in his position with Bryan Klug, who has been head of player and coaching development at the academy for the last few seasons, assisting him.

Lee O’Neill looks set to continue in his role as academy manager having held that job in addition to the general manager of football operations position he took on in December 2018.

With all the positivity around the club at the moment, I'm not gonna lie. I'm gutted at this one.

Dyer has been raving about him. Sounds like he was so beneficial to have around so I don't get this decision.

Wish you nothing but the best Butch! A proper ITFC legend.

I'd like a bit more information on the circumstances. It never feels good when club legends move on, but in some circumstances, it can be difficult to move forward with a lot of old boys around.

Really poor from the club if true.

Think that is a big mistake, with all his experience.

Disappointing. We can find a role for the Wigan kit man but can't find a role for a club legend like Butcher.

I will reserve judgement. All I will say is this; the current management and staff just better get it right or else the proverbial will hit the fan.

I love Butch but it's not jobs for the old boys anymore

That's a shame. Was hoping to read it was his decision, poor.

Surely he is more valuable in terms of experience tha the coaches Cook has brought in... Roberts?... Jeffers? I. Know who I'd rather have. Awful way to treat a club legend

Seems there's no room for sentiment. Butch is, and always will be an ITFC Legend, that's a given. Surprised he's not been given some sort of back room position, but I hope that the new broom, that clearly sweeps clean, reaps some benefits.

Surely there could have been some kind of ambassadorial role created for him? (If he would want such a position of course). I wonder who made the decision. Surely KD and BK wouldn't have suggested his departure? Sad to see him leave.

I'm with everyone else on this one, a strange and disappointing decision as Butch is a great role model for our youngsters so this will be a big loss. Good luck to him on what he decides to do next and hope we see him back in some capacity soon.

Very sad but the new broom is evidently a very wide one. However sentiment aside Paul Cook must be allowed to build what supporting team he wants.
I just hope Terry can still be involved with us at some future time.

Keep Lee O'Neil though joke of a decision

Massive fan of Butch as a player and seems like a top bloke but for someone you would have thought had all the qualities to be a manager/coach he's never set the world alight. Cool seems to rate Dyer highly and with Klug providing the experience and continuity I'd say letting Dyer develop quicker in a solo role makes sense.

Although I respect the Clubs decision and am not sure it is the right one. Good luck Terry with whatever you do now. Absolute Town Legend.

Lee O'Neill is still here?

Hadn't heard his name mentioned in a looooong while and I'm really surprised that Evans' mouthpiece is still anywhere near this club... where's that "new broom" mentality when you need it?

Sad to see Butch will not be involved at ITFC this coming season... as others have said, he is a TRUE legend for club and country.

Can't believe some of the comments here…. Butch was a typical Lambert signing to appease the fans and nothing more.

Fresh start , fresh ideas , doesn't want any room for challenge ,plainly wants us all to focus intensely on the ‘NEW ‘ team around him ,with no distractions nor any hint of ‘ viewing or doing ‘ things the OLD ‘ way !
TB is a lifetime legend for both ITFC and England ,so maybe in due course a role in publicity and hosting will come along !
Good luck !

Everyone is giving it billy big bollix without knowing the circumstances. Things have been pants at Portman road for years now and i for one an happy with this new broom. No room for sentiment I'm afraid, get over it, we move on!

TB is & always be a legend for us. There could be a dozen different ways this could go/has gone. I am not sure how much time he put in/was asked to put in, but it could be as simple as one or other side didn't like the set up. We have to move on, big job to do for the 1st team squad this season.

Hardly ever saw Evans photographed around the club without O'Neill being present, got to assume that they hit it off really well. Wonder whether Evans insisted that he be guaranteed a job as part of the deal to sell the club.

I'm sure TB will be around in some capacity - but without knowing the circumstances we can't say how this decision was made: as it wasn't within a week of Cook or Ashton arriving that suggests that everyone has sat down, and maybe Terry B really wants to enjoy his retirement now, rather than committing to a 4 or 5 year journey. As recent events have shown, life is short, so respect either way, and I'm certain he'll be on Radio Suffolk a lot as our Legend in Residence.

There are some overly sentimental comments about this. TB only rejoined the club year and a half ago, its not like he has been in the role since retiring from playing.

Without knowing precisely what his duties were, it looks to be a simple case of being excess to requirements. It wouldn't surprise me if there are more faces leaving in the near future, because at one time it seemed we had more backroom staff than players.

Didn't Dyer say he was effectively doing it for free last season? My take form this (with no inside knowledge) is that with all the money coming in Terry probably looked for a wage from his work, not outrageous considering. However, given that Lee was moving back into his old role they couldn't justify both him and Klug assisting Dyer. Therefore the one not employed gets shown the front door. Not anyone's fault really just a change of circumstances.
