Legend Butcher Exits U23s Role
Friday, 16th Jul 2021 11:58

TWTD understands Blues legend Terry Butcher will no longer be working with Town’s U23s in the season ahead.

The former Town and England captain rejoined the club in February 2020 coaching in the academy.

Last season, the 62-year-old worked alongside U23s manager Kieron Dyer coaching the development squad, who finished second in Professional Development League Two South.

However, we understand the former centre-half has been told there is no role for him on the coaching staff in 2021/22.

Dyer will be continuing in his position with Bryan Klug, who has been head of player and coaching development at the academy for the last few seasons, assisting him.

Lee O’Neill looks set to continue in his role as academy manager having held that job in addition to the general manager of football operations position he took on in December 2018.

Sad - Butcher has been an influence at the club off and on for over 40 years. I'd be surprised to see a manager last much more than 3 and suspect the current owners have a plan to get out after 5-7
Who knows what happens behind the scenes but there is a role for a former WORLD CUP SEMI FINAL CAPTAiN -on match days, meeting sponsors, signing academy kids, forging relationships with parents not too mention what must be huge knowledge on the game.

Maybe he was just perceived as threat,
Or Has Butch just found the bunch of Scousers at the top too humourous?

He did a piece for TV recently and the Zoom caption said he was in Southampton. Might be his second home but if not, he isn't exactly local. Would have been great to keep him in an advisory or ambassadorial role.

We have got to trust the new team. Move on.

Maybe give the club a chance to make a statement, this may have leaked before they were ready? Always a shame to see a well-loved ex-player leave but you never know what the dynamic is or reasons behind the scenes.

Let's just say, we hope it all works out shall we ? Hardly, if any, Club Legends associated with the Club now.
Respect is a lost word in this Country these days, this is another such example. Just had to be an Ambassador role for Butch within the Club.
I believe this Legend link was important to keep in some capacity, and this move will possibly do more than just disappoint some I'm sure .... !!!
Time will tell - as always.

ChateauWines…. How can you say it's not Jobs for the boys anymore? Firstly he wasn't Lamberts mate when hired. Secondly have you seen who has been hired by Cook? His mates.

Butcher is an absolute Ipswich and England legend make no mistake I wish we had a player of his ilk at centre half today however without any context as to who made the decision and why maybe we shouldn't all sh!tty about it. He is 62 they may have needed him to be more involved which he may not have wanted to? It could be so many things. Whilst I feel it would be good to have a player with his commitment to the club at the club personally would like to see burley come back in the club and maybe the youth set up as the one he had was pretty good alongside Klug and probably the last time we had that amount of quality players come into the first team and cut it in the premier league.

Couldn't he be assistant manager, at least on a temporary basis?

So we can hire three first team coaches with zero first team coaching experience but let a guy go with more coaching experience than the tree of them combined, a love for the club and a playing career that's eclipses anyone's at Ipswich? Thought we were being told Evans had cut corners with back room staff, but now we are loading an extra Job on Klug? This stinks and I'd like to hear from the club and Butch.

Time for Kieran to show what he's made of. Bit sad but good decision I reckon

Disappointed…..yes of course. Has Butch had a successful coaching/managerial career….unfortunately not. It's time to remove sentiment and start to move our club forward. I am sure Butch will still be connected with ITFC in an informal role…..legends will never be forgotten. Come on fellas……things are looking up 🙏🏻

Strangest decision yet by the new management. It's having read Dyer's comments about Butch that I find this decision mystifying.

Those of you saying this is not an old boys network anymore presumably don't include Paul Cook in that analogy?

Sorry to see you go big man, wish you all the best, nobody can take away what a legend you were for club and country.

When you own and run a club you have to make decisions- some will be good ones some won't. Is this that big a deal - it's a decision. 🤷‍♂️

I hope they put a Pic of Butch with the bandage in the Kids dressing room as showing what it takes to be Real lover of The Game.

Really don't understand this. The U23s were very successful last season. Perhaps he spoke his mind about some of the departures and our current hirachy only want yes men. Great chap I am very sad and annoyed.

I just hope that they put a pic of the Bandaged BUTCH in the Kids dressing room to show what it means to love and give your all to the Game.

At 62 there will be a better way for Butch to fulfill an ambassadorial role for the club than with the under 23s.
The comments above all reflect our total love for the man, i am no different, but people are treating it as if he has been shown the door and told not to come back. He had been assisting the old coaching team, not in an appointed nor paid capacity as we understand, they haven't shot him!
Why don't we wait to see what role he subsequently fulfills or wait for his comments before we jump to conclusions and make comments about the remaining staff

Shame Butch never played for Wigan or Bristol would have stayed if that was the case. Poor decision we need all the help with the defence we can muster would rather have seen him stay and Dyer go really

What?

I've been supportive of what the new owners and PC are doing, but this is the first decision they've made that I think they have got wrong. They said all the right things about our history and being a sleeping giant when they came in; well, Butch wrote that history. He was the only person at the club who can make the connection between the circus we are today and one of the top clubs in Europe that we used to be. Add in his wealth of coaching experience, his relationship with Dyer and the U23s' success last season, and it seems like a no-brainer to keep him. To be as media-savvy as they appear to be, I would have thought the new owners would have recognized the importance of keeping a Town legend on the staff.

If he's gone, I suspect it's because PC doesn't want to compete with another large personality with a lot of influence at the club. It's easy for him to say, "Sorry, Terry. We don't have any money to finance a new position with the youths." (As he expands the backroom staff with people he knows).

I acknowledge I'm biased when it comes to TB, but I think the club has got this very wrong.

Dyersdream. Whether so called fans like you think so or not, Lee Oneill does a great job at the club. In fact hes been doing several jobs at the club under Evan's. Being his spokesman was only a very minor part of his job. Now he'll be able to concentrate on what was his main job. And all behind the scenes. And as well as all that, hes a former town player, and a town fan. So doesnt deserve the sort of comments you've made here
