Crooks Close to Boro Move - Report
Monday, 19th Jul 2021 11:21

Middlesbrough are reportedly closing in on signing Blues target Matt Crooks from Rotherham.

Crooks was the subject of two rebuffed Town bids - £400,000 and then either £500,000 or £600,000 - but with Championship clubs also interested in the 27-year-old with two having made offers, the highest said to be £750,000 rising to £1.25 million.

Now, according to Football League World, Crooks is set to undergo a medical on Teesside today, a fee having presumably been agreed with the Millers.

Last Thursday, Rotherham manager Paul Warne revealed Town had made no new offer for Crooks, although we understand the Blues remained interested despite having signed Scott Fraser from the MK Dons on Wednesday.

“I spoke to the Ipswich manager last week,” Warne told the Rotherham Advertiser. “He candidly asked ‘What did I think?’, I candidly told him what I thought and they haven’t offered again.

“It is not something we’re looking to do, to lose our best assets to our competitors.

“I think, in fairness to the player and with no disrespect to Ipswich, if he was to leave here he would want Championship football. That’s what his ability deserves really.”

I'd say we stopped bidding as soon as the Fraser deal was done, can't have two quality number 10's both expecting to play. That's my take

Rotherham lost is as good as our gain. So I think it's all good for us.

Cheshire_Blue Its nice to know there is an older tractor boy than me on TWTD.

Regardless of the story, I can't believe TWTD are quoting Football League World 🤦‍♂️ they have some of the worst journalism and pointless stories going! Whenever I read something about town on there it's as if the person writing hasn't a clue what they're talking about.

You can't win em all. We've done very well so far, and there will almost certainly be more to come.

Think we all saw this coming when Fraser was signed. Fear a similar thing may happen with Celina but fingers crossed we get him as he would be the marquee signing I think we need out wide

None of the players we have signed so far have been known to us as likely before they signed (bar Harper), and certainly none played out with public information.
I think this died for us when Warne came out and named us and detailed the bids.
That's just not the way ITFC does business now. Move on, sign the other targets, and make sure we give Warne a proper PR welcome when RFC visit

So, we wanted him and Fraser, so wonder if we have a permanent alternative lined up. Disappointing news, but not the end of the world.

At the end of the day you can't blame Crooks if he wants to go to Boro to play back in the Championship. I think we've done a shrewd bit of business by getting in Fraser so whatever we bid for Crooks we can reinvest that money for other players, not sure if we even made a 3rd bid so fair play on Ashton for not getting into a bidding war and paying over the odd for a player in his last season of his contract. On the plus side too he doesn't have to play us in the league so he won't do us any damage. COYB

They really did not want to sell to us. imagine they would take less £££ from other teams.

Exactly. He won't be any trouble this coming season. He'll be in another league.

Yeah, rubbish player anyway, we didn't want him, we are loaded and can get someone better, have blind faith he was the man but also not needed. Smh at some on here.

Mariner 1974: with all due respect , Warne himself made a “ thing” of his Norwich connections when we last played the Millers, saying it's always nice to get one over on Town because of his previous Norwich connections and he is still a fan of the budgies . So I'm afraid that won't wash with me. I do agree however that they were always going to sell to a championship club, and that the pjj kg sure himself would always prefer that move. I would say however, that the way ITFC is going now , he come to regret not joining us.

DavefromWatford and Cheshire_Blue you are not the only ones. As a 10 year old I used to get in to the old west stand when the gates were opened 20 minutes before the end in 1948. One year later John Elsworthy arrived. Alf Ramsey told my Dad he built his Ipswich team round Elsworthy.

ArnieM & DavefromWatford - I just mean we all have to take it with a healthy pinch of salt. Paul's a good lad and has a decent sense of humour on him, so he's gonna have some fun with the press when referring to Ipswich. He's played for/managed/ had an affiliation with Rotherham for over 20 years. Played half of his professional games for them and I'm sure his bond with them is a whole bunch stronger than with Norwich. Paul Cook supports Liverpool, but he's never in his lifetime ever going to manage them is he!

Well at least Crooks won't be playing against us this season . We just need to get out of this division , then continue the rebuild .

Btw, when I was studying at Sheffield uni, I used to drive to Rotherham to try and find a slightly less hilly area to run …. Sheffield was bloody torture re the hills lol, and tbh Rotherham wasn't much better!

I've also never seen us win at Rotherham ( missed the game where Murphy played a blinder ).

We move on. Celina would be more of a coup along with another centre half. It is looking like a very small squad so the medical team better be up to scratch otherwise we will have problems naming 7 subs at this rate

Hello lads and lasses...Imho You where never gunna get Matt crooks even by our standards selling to another lg1 club and a potential promotion rival this season would have been crazy . We have a habit of messing up contracts and under selling players Crooks is worth double what was been offered and if the 1.25 m that Boro have payed for him is true they have a good deal . But as he entered his last year of his contract his value goes down but 400k and 600k offers(if correct) from you lot was talking the piss and i think most people on hear would agree . If he has gone and iam assuming he has all though no official word as yet the money will be spent on the full back position and possibly a striker do not think because we have lost him it will make us weaker although a very good lg1 player the position he played we have strength in depth Dan bar laser Ben wiles and Jamie Lyndsey . All the best for this coming season we will let you finish second behind us . UTM FTO

No club offers what a player is valued at by his Club do they . We've under sold a fair few of our own players ( and paid over the odds). I think Town like all other clubs go in with a tester offer, and expected to build on that offer. But as soon as Championship clubs came into the bidding I think we turned our attentions elsewhere- we've gotta whole squad to rebuild.

Here's hoping we are both in the top two, but it'll be a tough season no doubt about it and certainly no guarantees. Good luck and naturally it's be a Town… Millers 1-2 👍

We were never getting him as it would have been bonkers fr Rotherham to sell to us. Plus I'm not convinced he's what we need anyway, certainly at that price. Get Dan Cowley in (on a free) and we've got him, Harper and Fraser to compete for the No.10 (and two of them can play deeper). If we can by some miracle keep Downes as well, then our centre is sorted. I'm more concerned about centre back and the wide roles.

The idiots on here who have gone from “he's the man” to “it doesn't matter”…. You have to check your previous comments to realise how ridiculous you look. This was neither a need or a disaster. We might not get promoted with or without him. Keyboard managers a plenty. Rational thinks…. Not so many
