Town Closing in On Coulson Loan
Wednesday, 21st Jul 2021 12:45

TWTD understands Town are closing in on the loan signing of Middlesbrough left-back Hayden Coulson.

It was reported yesterday that the Blues had won the race for the 23-year-old and we understand the season-long switch should be confirmed in the next few days. Sunderland and Championship Luton had also been linked.

Gateshead-born Coulson came through the ranks at Boro before spending time out on loan at St Mirren and Cambridge United, both in 2018/19.

Coulson, who also plays wide on the left of midfield, broke into the Teessiders’ first team at the start of 2019/20 and has now gone on to make 28 starts and 21 sub appearances, scoring once.

He is contracted to Boro until 2023, however, with his involvement having been limited last season his departure is little surprise.

Town have already signed one left-back this summer, Matt Penney, who joined after leaving Sheffield Wednesday, but with Stephen Ward having been released at the end of the season and Myles Kenlock among those told he can move on this summer and currently training with the U23s, the addition of a second left-sided full-back has looked on the cards.

Not too concerned this is a loan signing. Very few signings are permanent anyway and most players tend not to stick around for longer than three years and can become complacent and comfortable as we have witnessed in the past few years.

The way I look at this loan is Coulson is in the last year of his contract, if he plays well and likes it here we have more chance of signing on a free next year, if not suited nothing wasted.

Good points made by Linkboy and Grumpyoldman but you could also argue that if he does well other clubs could be in for him and we might have trouble keeping him . But a couple of loans are to be expected i suppose just hope we dont have to cover other positions with loans as 4 or 5 rarely seems to work .

Get him in, should be good signing!
Shame about Kenlock he's never really had proper run in the team. He is a talented full back but obvious not enough for Cook to see👀

Coulson scored twice for Boro in a friendly today. Would he be playing for them if he was on the verge of leaving?

Can honestly say other than what's reported on here, know nothing about him. I'm not sure we need another left back as kenlock is more than capable back up. If we are going to loan players surely we want nailed on starters, not squad players?

Is this the same fellah who bagged a couple of goals last night?

Where is Celina or has he now gone somewhere?

He scored a couple of goals against part timers. The goalkeeper was probably more concerned about delivering the post than covering them. I don't want us loaning squad players. If we are going to loan in a player it needs to be someone who's too good for us to sign permanently, like a Lawrence or Celina(at the time) or Ryan Fraser.

Plays Left Midfield too, good addition, we have only Penney and Dobra assuming Kenlock doesn't stay. Im assuming players who come on loan are where we have been unable rather than unwilling to get a permanent deal agreed in time. As MB says above, loans should be the exception rather than the rule.
His name has been mentioned for a long while so clearly he is one of the targets Cookie identified a while back.
Celina and Lewis Gibson would make the five extra Ashton promised, lets get them done, its shaping up better and better by the day.
