Outcast Quartet Start as U23s Win at Needham
Wednesday, 21st Jul 2021 21:40

Out-of-favour quartet Flynn Downes, Kayden Jackson, Myles Kenlock and Brett McGavin all started as Town’s U23s won 1-0 in a friendly at Needham Market with Tawanda Chirewa on target for the Blues.

Downes, Jackson, Kenlock and McGavin have been training with the U23s throughout pre-season having been told they can move on.

The latter three previously featured at Bury last Tuesday, while Downes was involved in his first game during pre-season. All four were replaced in the second half with the squad augmented by a number of academy scholars.

Midfielder Teddy Bishop wasn't involved as he has been at Lincoln City today ahead completing the formalities relating to his move to the Imps.

Striker Ben Morris played his first game after suffering his second cruciate knee ligament injury in pre-season last year before being replaced at the break.

Half-time sub Chirewa netted the only goal of the game 11 minutes into the second half with a curling effort, his second of pre-season following a similar strike in the first team friendly at Dartford earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Town’s U18s drew 2-2 with May & Baker at Aveley’s Parkside with Jack Manly netting a penalty and Gerard Buabo grabbing the second before the home side levelled in the penultimate minute.

Elsewhere, Blues target Hayden Coulson was on target twice for Middlesbrough as the Teessiders, who are currently on tour in Devon, won 7-0 at Tavistock in a pre-season game. The left-back was replaced at half-time.

U23s: Bort (Cullum), Agbaje, Kenlock (Bradshaw), McGavin (Bello), Smith, Baggott (Stephenson), Crane, Downes (Cutbush), Jackson (F Barbrook), Page (Chirewa 46), Morris (Valentine 46).

Chirewa has scored a couple pre-season now, that's encouraging for him and the club.

Time for Downes to want to be here, he could earn a place at Town as a defensive midfielder, just has to up his game and desire to earn a place as a starter..

So the outcasts once again start & play a full 45 mins & [ sorry to pick him out again ] Jackson still cannot score...Then the youngsters have 45 mins & manage too...Says it all really......

Only a 1-0 win against Needham Market - hardly inspiring - in fact rather worrying [ no disrespect to Needham market ]

Jackson probably didn't want to score against his new club

Are the rumours true that the Needham Market manager wants to take the quartet on loan until January with a view to making the Downes and Jackson deals permanent. Flynn needs to think about this carefully as it could seriously jeopardise his England prospects!

Iwas able to speak to Flynn last week in Brentwood and he said that he didn't know wher ehe was going. However, it was clear that he's not going to stay at PR, doesn't seem to like Cook!
It's clear he wants out so will probably turn out for U23 until sorted.

The sooner those 4 are gone the better

Pilgrim blue I've hear that others are not keen on Cook. The club needs a clear out but maybe there are better ways to achieve this. I'm backing him and can't wait to see what side he puts out in game one. No excuses he's got money and we have to be promoted. Anything less p45.

Chirewa two goals in two games other clubs will be taking note. Unlike a lot of our youngsters he seems to have the physical attributes.

Marinersnose - I agree with you but the problem with getting rid of Cook is this is an entirely new squad picked by him to suit his style and preferred formation so if/when another manager comes in, they'll be wanting to play a different style/formation and therefore want different players.

Sorry, are you seriously talking about the option of getting rids of Cook? That is laughable. So tell me what has Jackson done over the last 18 months to show he is capable of either holding down a place in the first team, or that he has the desire to be here? And Downes made it clear last year that he wants to leave, so bye bye. Clubs haven't exactly snapped him up have they? This club has done nothing for the past 2 years with the same bang average players. So if PC wants them all gone and replaced with who he sees fit, then we should all back hm. They are not keen on Cook? oh bless them. They have had it easy for too long, and now we have owners and a manager that won't take their 5hit attitude anymore. Don't like it, tough.

Downes dosent seem to like Cook big deal who cares let him rot in the u23s no body has come in with a offer for him yet didn't do a lot against Needham either. I see the lad at Middlesborough is showing the right attitude scoring two in a friendly that's the sort of player we want. Fans have got to get over it their favourites or failures have been shown the door and if Cook was so unpopular why has he had so much success what bo++ocks people put on here COYB.

without this quartet of players we've only got eleven first team players

how do you get promoted with such a tiny squad?

multiplescoregasms added 17:36 - Jul 22
Only 11?

bluesteel added 18:01 - Jul 22
apologies there's 15-17 players in the first team squad on itfc but that includes 4/5 players who have only played only a handful of 1st team games

It's all gone quiet on the transfer front which in the last few weeks has usually meant we are about to announce a new signing. Exciting times ahead - literally nothing to be negative about is there.

Some advice for the Outcasts...

Downes, Kenlock & Jackson (Oooooh)
This is for real
Never meant to make our Paul Cook cry
Go apologise and you'll be fine

We've thrown babies out with the bathwater. Dozzell, Edwards, Downes, & Bishop were all promotion-standard midfielders. We failed because we had no strikers, aging full-backs, and managers who were clueless how to get the most out of the squad.
-2

multiplescoregasms added 19:39 - Jul 22
How can they possibly be promotion standard midfielders, when with these players we haven't even made the top 8 in the past 2 years?
Dozzell 93 appearances 3 goals
Edwards 109 appearances 14 goals
Downes 99 appeareances 3 goals
Bishop 132 appearances 5 goals
Total 433 appearances 25 goals

You truly believe that is a promotion winning midfield? I am not saying that the players PC has bought in are going to tear up the league from day 1, but surely we are going to be more of a threat going forward without these 4.

Bluesteel: as has been proven in the last 2 seasons, those 4 losers won't get us promoted, so they can all p155 off. They've finally been told some home truths and the little flakes can't take it.

Linkboy13 - if only ipswich could score 2 in a friendly that would be great.

Tavistock are in a level 10 league in football pyramid, so slightly worse than Dartford.

We need signings and need them quickly, otherwise they get no pre-season and pick up injuries. Whilst the calibre of the player signed is better than what we had, lets face it, the whole process of getting them in is poor. It has not changed despite the new owners.

Whatever happened to the Everton lad that we were closing in on??.

Oh and one other thing - net outlay is about £250,000. Not a huge amount considering the vast wealth at our disposal.
