Out-of-favour quartet Flynn Downes, Kayden Jackson, Myles Kenlock and Brett McGavin all started as Town’s U23s won 1-0 in a friendly at Needham Market with Tawanda Chirewa on target for the Blues.

Downes, Jackson, Kenlock and McGavin have been training with the U23s throughout pre-season having been told they can move on.

The latter three previously featured at Bury last Tuesday, while Downes was involved in his first game during pre-season. All four were replaced in the second half with the squad augmented by a number of academy scholars.

Midfielder Teddy Bishop wasn't involved as he has been at Lincoln City today ahead completing the formalities relating to his move to the Imps.

Striker Ben Morris played his first game after suffering his second cruciate knee ligament injury in pre-season last year before being replaced at the break.

Half-time sub Chirewa netted the only goal of the game 11 minutes into the second half with a curling effort, his second of pre-season following a similar strike in the first team friendly at Dartford earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Town’s U18s drew 2-2 with May & Baker at Aveley’s Parkside with Jack Manly netting a penalty and Gerard Buabo grabbing the second before the home side levelled in the penultimate minute.

Elsewhere, Blues target Hayden Coulson was on target twice for Middlesbrough as the Teessiders, who are currently on tour in Devon, won 7-0 at Tavistock in a pre-season game. The left-back was replaced at half-time.

Coulson may have only been playing against Tavistock, but he scored 2 and is clearly showing that he wants to play football and isn't prepared to just accept his wage and do nothing. Maybe he is trying to show Warnock he is worth keeping, or maybe he is trying to show other clubs, like us, that he is worth a punt for this season. Either way, he is playing pre-season football, so if we are lucky enough to get him he will be ready to go from the start if needed. Totally agree with LinkBoy13, we want players like Coulson, not players who are here for the free ride.

Dog added 23:17 - Jul 22 I do see Linkboy's point. Coulson does look half decent in his video too. I would expect a town side to score 5 or more against level 10 opposition though. And if Jackson was to score twice i wouldn't assume he had turned a corner, i would just expect him to score twice. I am concerned at what we have at the moment, the 3 games we have left and preying covid does not rule out any of those games. I thought we would have quite a few through the door by end of june. The fact we are 3 weeks into july and only signed 2 players in 23 days is poor. I am concerned that we may end up with 4 or 5 lian signings which i don't believe many, if any, wants. If Coulson signs that will be 2. Celina - which is a big big if - would be 3. That is plenty.

grow_our_own added 12:03 - Jul 23 multiplescoregasms, Downes and Dozzell wereare still pre-peak. We used to give our promising young players a chance at ITFC. Too many in this parish impatiently forget how this once great club was built. Appearances <> starts. Eg most of those Bish apearances were a few mins here and there. Edwards vastly improved last season when most of those 14 goals were scored. There was plenty of bathwater to be thrown out, these babies should not have been included.
