Edmundson Could Be First £1m Signing of New Era
Sunday, 25th Jul 2021 21:31

Town have reportedly offered Rangers £1 million for central defender George Edmundson.

Earlier this afternoon, it emerged that the Blues are targeting the 23-year-old, who is surplus to requirements at Ibrox.

Town have made a bid for the former Oldham man with the Daily Record reporting that the offer on the table is around £1 million.

However, Championship clubs have also shown interest with Rangers having previously turned down a number of offers this summer.

We understand the Blues are in discussions regarding Edmundson and are ready to hand the player a four-year deal at Portman Road.

Derby County, where Edmundson spent the second half of last season on loan, are keen on his return to Pride Park but are only able to offer another loan due to their transfer embargo, which is the case with a number of the other interested parties.

Championship new boys Peterborough were keen on Edmundson earlier in the summer but have dropped out of the running.

More recently, League One trio Charlton, Sunderland and Portsmouth were claimed to want him on loan, however, it's Championship clubs who are the Blues' competition with Rangers looking to do a permanent deal.

If the reported figure of £1 million is correct - and Rangers previously turned down a £750,000 bid this summer - the central defender will become the most expensive signing of the Gamechanger revolution so far.

Edmundson joined the Glasgow giants from Oldham for £750,000 in the summer of 2019, signing a four-year deal which still has two seasons to run.

However, the Mancunian has never really established himself at Ibrox - he has made only 13 starts and four sub appearances, scoring twice - and has fallen down the pecking order following Nikola Katic’s return from a serious knee injury.

Edmundson, who is 6ft 3in tall, came through the ranks at Oldham and spent time on loan with Ramsbottom United, Alfreton and AFC Fylde while with the Latics.

In 2018/19 he was named in the League Two Team of the Year before making his move to Rangers that summer.

A commanding CB who can hopefully offer the spine of the team in both this league and (if all goes to plan) the championship. Yes from me.

The same Daily Record whi claimed we paid nearly £2 million for Waghorn and Garner?

Wow, I hope this happens. The players we are targeting are definitely a higher quality because we seem to be battling it out with Championship clubs. A 4 year deal is some statement too.

Please let this happen ……

If true would be a great deal for the club.
But it begs the question why didn't we offer £1 million for Crooks, who would have been superb addition to the squad and made a huge difference.

Woolfenthen... we did end up paying Rangers c.£2m for Garner and Waghorn.

Garner was around £1m.

Waghorn was £250k, then c.£800k sell on fee when we sold him.

Means Rangers netted c.£2m for the pair.

Gforce - I imagine because we didn't think he was worth £1M?

Bet it's more 600,000 plus sell on clause

Blue Moses....Middlesbrough certainly thought he was worth it.
If this Rangers guy,who most of their fans seem to think is just ok ish,is worth £1 mill, then Crooks has to be in the same bracket.

This guy might turn out to be a great signing but he's hardly set the world alight at Rangers or Derby last year. £1m based on what? If he signs I'll hope it's a great move but it really is pathetic to see people getting excited about a player they've probably not seen or even heard of before. You can make Nolan or a Nsiala look good on a YouTube video. McGuinness probably has way more about him and loads of you slagged him off last season. We need an experienced CB, not someone who makes Nsiala look like captain material.

Would be surprised if we did offer 1M particularly as we seemed reluctant to go to that figure with Crooks. Anyway cb is a position that really needs strengthening ,although I thought we might be looking to get someone more experienced than Edmundsen for that sort of money but lets see how it turns out,...... coyb

Not being negative as very pleased with new regime but this is a signing that doesn't excite me. We have Woolf who should be good enough. We need another CB but a leader and an experienced defender in their late 20's/early 30's who knows this league well with possible championship experience.

@blueheath sorry to say don't think wolfenden is good enough even with his mistakes Nisala is a better CB stronger and can't be beaten in air just slow on turn and prone to lunge in. Wolf is quicker but is not as good in air and positional sense causes concerns he is an OK backup on bench but not a 1st team CB IMHO I agree with your sentiment that we need a leader in there another Mings who is vocal at all times not sure there is one in the market currently though

I see some of these comments about Crooks etc, but I read a few negative comments, let's remember that we can only get the players that want to come here. If this fella wants to come and play in Division 1 and get us promoted to the championship then that's good enough for me. I watched Saturdays game and it's very positive indeed. Cool is building a side that plays his way and style. We ain't even a Championship side ‘YET' and have to adhere to the spending rules of Div-1. Otherwise we could potentially end up as Derby are in getting sanctions against us.

MoaningMonkeyBlue, you have neg views on everything the club does, Who do YOU think we should sign ,who is realisticly available and at a price we can pay ? you obviously know better than those at ITFC, Who would get YOU excited enough to say something positive ?

Why so negative? I don't know this player but you have to trust Cook and his staff surely?

rangers would struggle in english fourth tier football so not earth shattering really

Crooks plays in midfield. We have several good midfielders already.

Edmundson is centre back. We are woefully short on quality at centre back.

It's really not that complicated to work out.

Rangers bought him for £750k two years ago, they loaned him out for the second half of last season and he s now “surplus to requirements” having played few games for them. It doesn't sound awfully promising to me.

I would have kept McGuiness.

Is Cameron Carter-Vickers still available? He did well for us when he was here.

Gforce Wallingford . Sorry but it is clear you cannot grasp how the transfer bidding works . Once we knew we were being out gunned by a Championship club and one that is close to his home ,we dropped out and rightly so because all we could do was to boost the Crooks fee by offering more . Rotherham did not want to sell to us and we did not want to inflate the fee and that would add more cash to the coffers of a League 1 rival . I think its safe to say Ashton/Cook know better than you how it works . Please stop criticising the club you claim to support .
