Edmundson Could Be First £1m Signing of New Era
Sunday, 25th Jul 2021 21:31

Town have reportedly offered Rangers £1 million for central defender George Edmundson.

Earlier this afternoon, it emerged that the Blues are targeting the 23-year-old, who is surplus to requirements at Ibrox.

Town have made a bid for the former Oldham man with the Daily Record reporting that the offer on the table is around £1 million.

However, Championship clubs have also shown interest with Rangers having previously turned down a number of offers this summer.

We understand the Blues are in discussions regarding Edmundson and are ready to hand the player a four-year deal at Portman Road.

Derby County, where Edmundson spent the second half of last season on loan, are keen on his return to Pride Park but are only able to offer another loan due to their transfer embargo, which is the case with a number of the other interested parties.

Championship new boys Peterborough were keen on Edmundson earlier in the summer but have dropped out of the running.

More recently, League One trio Charlton, Sunderland and Portsmouth were claimed to want him on loan, however, it's Championship clubs who are the Blues' competition with Rangers looking to do a permanent deal.

If the reported figure of £1 million is correct - and Rangers previously turned down a £750,000 bid this summer - the central defender will become the most expensive signing of the Gamechanger revolution so far.

Edmundson joined the Glasgow giants from Oldham for £750,000 in the summer of 2019, signing a four-year deal which still has two seasons to run.

However, the Mancunian has never really established himself at Ibrox - he has made only 13 starts and four sub appearances, scoring twice - and has fallen down the pecking order following Nikola Katic’s return from a serious knee injury.

Edmundson, who is 6ft 3in tall, came through the ranks at Oldham and spent time on loan with Ramsbottom United, Alfreton and AFC Fylde while with the Latics.

In 2018/19 he was named in the League Two Team of the Year before making his move to Rangers that summer.

Tractorboybig, we are LEAGUE ONE, no signing is going to be earth shattering, ! All these people expecting some mega signing now we have new owners really need to wake up and get a grip , all we can do is hopefully sign better players than we had and do well enough to start progressing , Championship, and hoefully one day the Prem,

This is a gamble and 1 million quid does seem a bit high to me but I trust Cook and Ashton's judgement

Inclined to trust PC's judgement. Based upon what I've read and you've all said, the new signings have all added something positive. On that basis, if Cookie wants him, he's likely to be better than what we have…..

It's all gone very quiet on the CB from Everton (Gibson??) or have I missed something?

Sounds like this will happen and possibly other signing like Celina will be loans.

Possibly Gibson but this has gone quiet and I still reckon , once he has played a bit, Cook will go back in for Jacobs because he know what he is going to get.

Rangers are the equivalent of a decent Championship side and this lad isn't featuring. He should be fine at this level. He hS age and physicality on his side. An upgrade on Nsiala hopefully albeit he did okay against Palace.

Gforce and those others saying we should have offered a million for crooks. How do you know we didnt? Just bcse it wasnt reported on here or anywhere else it doesnt mean we didnt? And frankly I think we could have out bid anyone else and it would still have been rejected. Warne made it clear he didnt want to sell to a lge1 team. And anyway, even if we didnt, maybe its bcse we didnt value him at that amount. Would any of u pay more than for something than you think its worth? So why do you think town should pay more for a player than he is worth in their eyes? Regardless of us having a lot of money, we will have a budget for what we are willing to spend in this window. So get real people. We are not gonna be throwing money around like confetti just to get 1 player.

Dont know nothing about this guy but i trust Cook and his staff rather than the armchair experts on here. The thing that worries me the most is getting this squad to gel for the start of the season. Might be a case of grinding out results in the first five to ten games.

I trust Cook more than Lambert and Hurst, more than Jewell and Keane.. Less than McCarthy.
I trust Ashton more than Marcus Evans and Lee O'Neil
I came on the website to see if we were being linked with anyone - We need a good centre commanding back- the fee may or may not be true- this is encouraging news

Wickets; we could have started negotiations with the player and his club before the end of his loan.

Well there are plenty of players that will be out of favour ckubs that don't fit into the managers plan but go to another team and will be the best player the scouts at Ipswich would have watched him quite a few times and like what they see as a defender its all about positioning and reading the game as well as being able to tackle, head and be able to pass out from the back

My Derby supporting mates said he looked really good in a very poor Derby team last year.

Ipswicgvusiness. So here we are saying we need an experienced strong cb and you then say we should have signed McGuinness, who is neither of those as yet. He did ok at times last season but was also caught out on more than one occasion. So its rather hypocritical to say we want experience then say we should have signed him.

We wouldn't go even close to £1m for Crooks…. Yet we are happy to pay that for a lad with no real track record?

Wickets…. Amazing that you have this inside knowledge of the Crooks situation. I assume you know this for a fact or are just pretending to know what you are talking about?

Wickets added 14:12 - Jul 26
Never claimed to have inside knowledge its just a matter of common sense really as myself and others have said Championship club in close proximity paying Championship wages . If nothing else we are restricted in what we could pay under EFL league 1 regulations . Pretty obvious i would have thought .

Blues1; I have never said that we should sign an “experienced strong” centre-back (although that would be nice). I have always thought that McGuinness was a very talented young player, an opinion which seems to have been endorsed by Mick McCarthy. Therefore, there is no “hypocrisy” from me.

Edmundsen hardly fits your criterion of “experienced”.

Ipswichbuiness Strange that as always most on here seemed to think McGuiness was not good enough but as soon as he went elsewhere they moan . Myself i think it was quite possible that he was on our list of possibles . From the links we have seen its likely that Bradley, Gibson, Edmundson ,Osho and most likely several where/are on that list as well and maybe in front of him . Who is to say we did not make an offer to McGuiness and he wanted to wait to see what else came his way . Every link that comes out will not sign for us most of these players are being advised by agents to wait and see before making up their minds . Ashton/Cook have done very well so far for me constant criticism is a bit silly .

Wickets; my view was always that McGuinness was a very promising young centre-back, albeit inexperienced. I thought that we should sign him, but we didn't.

Ipswichbusiness me too and if you want to check my forum posts you will see i very much rated him . But as i said the fact that he did not end up with us does not mean we did not try to get him does it ? maybe he just got a better offer , well we know he did that's football . We would have started the re build with a list of about 8 or even 10 possibles for every position we needed to fill . That is how it works .

Wickets: I do not claim to have any inside knowledge of the club's transfer dealings.

All I would do is repeat my original comment, “I would have kept McGiunness”.

He has been signed by McCarthy at Cardiff. Whatever you might say about McCarthy, he probably knows quite a lot about defending.

But you cant keep a player who's loan has finished and does not want to stay !!

Ipswichbusiness added 08:38 - Jul 27
Wickets: “I would have kept McGuinness” is the past tense. I would have kept him (or tried to keep him) by starting the negotiations before he left.

Of course, if he genuinely did not want to stay that would have made it all the harder.
