Town in Talks to Sign Chaplin
Monday, 26th Jul 2021 10:02

TWTD understands Town are closing in on a move for Barnsley forward Conor Chaplin, who previously played for Blues boss Paul Cook at Portsmouth.

We understand that talks are ongoing regarding the 24-year-old and a deal could be done before the end of the week.

Chaplin came through the youth system at Pompey having joined them aged six and broke into their senior side in 2014/15 and was a regular in Cook’s side at Fratton Park after he took over at the start of the following campaign.

Worthing-born Chaplin joined Coventry on loan in the summer of 2018 with the move becoming a permanent switch in the January. The following summer he joined Barnsley on a four-year deal.

In 2020/21 5ft 7in tall Chaplin, who plays wide or centrally as a number 10, made 34 starts and five sub appearances, scoring four goals.

Barnsley fans not happy so this must be another good signing

Hardly a goal machine, so not sure why the enthusiasm. He might be a decent squad player but we have youngsters who could score 4 goals in nearly 40 appearances

Linkboy13. I get where ur coming from re nsiala. But he gets a lot more stick than he deserves. He is arguably the best out and out defender we have. The one worry is when he has the ball at his feet imo. Fans go on about the number of penalties he gives away, but he gives no more away than any other defender. (2 last season. 3 if u count the lincoln one which even the ref stated later he got wrong). It's part and parcel of being a defender that you will give penalties away. Whoever you are. We also kept more clean sheets last season with him playing than with any other cb pairing. And he wasnt just ok on saturday, he was named man of the match. But yes, his form can be a bit inconsistent at times. Very much a confidence player and has stated as much previously when he said that online criticism had affected him. And we clearly require one, maybe 2 more in that position.

Monkeyblue. Do u actually know anything about football? Hes ot a striker. Hes a winger or a number 10. So his main job is to provide for others to score. Any goals he gets are a bonus.

I mean yes, fantastic signing. But if Cook is a one up top kind of guy, do we need 4 first team forwards? More worried about the defensive situation. This Edmundson guy looks good but still think we need a couple more options.

Barnsley don't need to sell as their owners ate worth personally £10bn plus, but they do operate on a similar “moneyball”basis to Brentford. Why are they prepared to let him go? The analysis must be that he's not effective. He might be a Darren Currie… looks way better than he delivers? Given the way Barnsley analyse every element of a player it's puzzling other than his poor goal scoring record in a team that won plenty of games. Also having played so often why would he be prepared to move down a division from a team that could have made the premiership? Even with our new found funds they are dwarfed by Barnsley.

Like the look of him, seems we are now upping the anti & going for real class at League 3 level & going for players who are well able to play in the Championship. Looks like the Rangers deal is going ahead.

d77sgw - Burns is a winger, Harper/Evans, CM (6/8), the only 10's we have are Fraser/Dobra, but Dobra has played more on the left in pre-season so he's coming in as either a LW or a 10 to compete with Fraser

GForce, thanks for the patronising advice. What is it with Town fans coming on here and just slagging each other off?! Half the posts above seem to be fans just having a dig at each other - let's just get together and support the team.
Back to my point, I'm well aware that we need a ‘squad', and certainly injuries took their toll last season, but my concern is that we appear to be prioritising a midfield where we seem reasonably well stocked, but don't really seem to have many options at the back. Hopefully the rumours about the guy at Rangers will lead to something, but I think we could do with an experienced head at the back, an organiser (a Mowbray/McGreal/Berra)

Although not a fan of MM only seeming to sign players that he knew (as they had nearly all seen better days) , at least the players PC is signing all seem to be of an age with potentially their best days still to come ?

Exciting times if we can sign championship players & Scottish premier players at league 1 level. Maybe bring the boro lad in & that will do it!!! players in every position, a smaller squad for players still to fight for there places. Might take a few games to gel but when we do gel it will be lift off 🚀

Blues1 I agree that Nsiala is a solid defender but he's uncomfortable with the ball at his feet and is prone to diving in. His commitment is first class but he would be better in reserve imo if we are to be serious contenders. You're correct defenders can and do give away penalties but his positional awareness is creating him problems by constantly getting wrong side. Maybe watching Chambers too much. As an out and out defender he puts his neck on the line and some of his blocks last season were incredible.

Neither Nsiala or Woolfenden will be first choice. New signings still to come.

Need three decent central defenders and one youngster coming through. Possibly Ndaba will go on loan again with a recall.

We have not heard much about El Miz- possibly the same scenarios here ?

Could be a good signing and he could be the Great Dictator of the game we need on the pitch!

I think this will be a good signing. Dobra is decent but he's not a good enough left winger to start every week. I assume Chaplin would be brought in to fill this position or to compete/rotate with Scott Fraser for the number 10 role. SF started on the left against Palace but he looked best when he tucked in, and it felt like he played out wide just because someone had to.

Yes blues 1 do half agree with you on the Nsiala debate but can't see him being Cook's number one choice when the season gets underway. Most defenders make mistakes but Toto makes very big one's.

Dont know him but clearly some of you guys do and he sounds decent. Clearly we are able to tempt clubs with fees and players who can see past us as (hopefully) a temporary L1 side.

Things are shaping up well for the season opener, but the window goes on for another few weeks after as well.

As far as Jackson is concerned, suspect he will end up going out on loan somewhere at the window's end, or be given a free which would be sad given we've clearly spent money taking up his option. Either way, we must be getting close to losing some of these other players, I cant believe shirt sales are so strong we can keep signing people without either knowing who's leaving or being seriously in danger of breaching the cap. Must be a few deals in train for the exit door im guessing.....
