Edmundson Signing Confirmed
Tuesday, 27th Jul 2021 13:38

Town have confirmed the signing of central defender George Edmundson from Rangers.

As previously reported, the 23-year-old has penned a four-year deal with the Blues, having been at the club yesterday afternoon to complete the formalities on his move.

"The opportunity came along and it was one I couldn't turn down," Edmundson told iFollow Ipswich.

"I spoke to the gaffer and it really excited me. He was a massive pull and this is also a huge club.

"Having also spoken to [CEO] Mark Ashton, he has been very clear about the culture being built at the club and the importance of engaging with the local community - that's something I also consider to be very important.

"I like the sound of the project here and I can see the intent the club has, so I'm delighted to have signed.”

Boss Paul Cook added: “George is at a great age but he also already has good experience in the game. We’re delighted to have him with us.""“He’s strong, a good talker, comfortable on the ball and he wants to play regular first-team football.

“I first came across him when he was on loan at AFC Fylde because they played Wigan in the FA Cup and took us to a replay. He was strong on the day and we’ve followed him ever since. We really think he’ll be a strong addition to the squad.”

Town fans are likely to get their first chance to see Edmundson in action when Millwall visit Portman Road on Saturday with the centre-half not involved this evening at Colchester.

Rangers accepted a fee understood to be around £750,000 for Edmundson, who becomes the most expensive signing of the Blues’ new era. The Gers will also be due further cash if Town win promotion to the Championship.

Reports that the Latics will be due a percentage of the deal from a sell-on agreed as part of the agreement which saw Edmundson join Rangers in 2019 are wide of the mark with the Glasgow giants having bought out that element of the deal early in his time at Ibrox.

Derby County, where Edmundson spent the second half of last season on loan, are keen on his return to Pride Park but are only able to offer another loan due to their transfer embargo, which is the case with a number of the other interested parties.

Championship new boys Peterborough made an offer for Edmundson, while we understand Millwall had a bid turned down.

League One trio Charlton, Sunderland and Portsmouth were claimed to want him on loan, however, Rangers were only looking to do a permanent deal.

Edmundson is the ninth signing of the summer with the Blues expected to make their 10th later today. We understand Barnsley’s Conor Chaplin is at the club to complete his switch.

Edmundson joined the Glasgow giants from Oldham for an initial £650,000 in the summer of 2019, signing a four-year deal.

However, the Mancunian never really established himself at Ibrox, making only 13 starts and four sub appearances, scoring twice.

Edmundson, who is 6ft 3in tall, came through the ranks at Oldham and spent time on loan with Ramsbottom United, Alfreton and AFC Fylde while with the Latics.

In 2018/19 he was named in the League Two Team of the Year before making his move to Rangers that summer.

You can tell the schools have broken up by looking at the schoolboy comment Meekreech above.
Phil Ham had Toto down as man of the match last Saturday.

Excellent signing don't know much about him but the other big challenging clubs in this league and Derby wanting him gives me hope. We need a centre back we have one and an organiser by the sounds of it something we have lacked. Would love to see an experienced head as well bought in at the back but anyone who sees this signing as a negative as some always do need to wobble their heads

Meekreech. What rubbish. Nsiala actually doesnt give away any more penalties than any other defender( 2 last season). Nor does he get sent off anymore than anyone else. Only 3 times I believe in the 3 years hes been here? And one of those was a joke of a decision. Was man of the match against palace. And yes, let's sign another cb then let one go and we're back where we started with just 2 cbs. As for donacien? Hes done nothing wrong all the time hes been here. Is a perfectly good rb as cover for kvy.

Interesting to analyse the likely line up going forward and realistically can only see the last dregs of the Evans era being on the subs bench apart from KVY and Woof and they are all on1 year contracts effectively so if we go up this year there is immediate scope to upgrade.

Someone tell Rooney we have a left back and a striker he can have for cheap?

Just keeps getting better & better. He will need a centre back partner though, as I have said before, Nsiala & Woolfenden are just not up to it.

This is a very welcome signing as our back four needed strengthening. Edmundson is the perfect age for the team Paul Cook is building. He has a mixture of talent and experience that will undoubtedly improve our defence and maybe even provide a threat in the opposition box at set pieces. The four year deal will hopefully see improve as a player as we improve as a team.
Welcome to Portman Road George

Oh happy days. Its coming together nicely ,but we need to curb a little of this optimism. Just about all the other clubs are doing business and bringing in players as welll as moing on players they cant see a future with.

As said great news but we dont want knee jerk reactions if we loose our opening match. The old adage is true....this is a marathon not a spirint.

I remember when Paul hurst first came in I was genuinely dreaming of promotion from the championship , that obviously unravelled spectacularly. The when PL came in I was sure we would avoid relegation and subsequently knew we would get promoted from league 1 . It all goes to prove I know nothing and my optimism has always been totally misplaced . Now what's changed , firstly the ownership has changed which hopefully has facilitated quality players entering the club . It seems it's the general opinion we have hoovered up all the quality players in league 1 up . I sincerely hope and do believe they are quality players . The one uncertainty I do have is how good is Paul Cook , he's had a lot of loud bluster since coming in has our demolition man who likes the tag of being brutally ruthless . Now I hope we win the league by 15 points don't get me wrong but having been let down so many times I'll reserve judgement until 3 months have passed

A welcome addition with, hopefully, more to come.

It's a great feeling when you have something to be optimistic about and this rebuilding process has captured our imaginations and left us dreaming of better things to come.

We all have to be mindful, however, that the promotion we all want so badly might take more than one season to materialise... this is only the start of a longer term project so I hope we can all give the new owners, management and players the time to settle, find their feet and gel into the team we all want to see represent our fabulous club.

As Ebantiass says above, this IS a marathon, not a sprint!

If it happens this season, I, like all of you, will be overjoyed and celebrating like there's no tomorrow but if it doesn't, just remember, this process, this new team and our new owners and management will still need our support to move forward with the grand plan.

There are some really exciting times ahead for us, no doubt, but as Ali G might say, let's "Keep it real!"

Welcome George, it's such a refreshing change to be able to beat Championship Clubs to players. It's looking promising for next season.
